I think the fact of the matter is, FlyLo, Dilla, and Nujabes, and other artists like Nomak all are musicians first. But just like Coltrain and Cal Cal Tjader both did Sax, they both had their own style. FlyLo is old school beats with simple electornic sounds, many from video games. Dilla was old school 1990's esque styled beats, with samples from the 70s. Nujabes was soul-jazz. They all were great. You can't compare Mario to John Coltrane to The Pharcyde.
