Devin took this song and made it his which is exactly the point of a cover. While I feel that his style has changed some of the emotion from the original song, I think it stands up very well on it's own. I'm a fan of both bands and I can appreciate the music for what it is without having to vilify or deify anyone.
However, when I heard this for the 1st time in the 90s, I was absolutely floored & had to find out who this kickass vocalist was. This was my introduction to the almighty Devin Townsend & I'm forever thankful because of it. Love live RUSH & Devin.
Eh, I kind of understand the criticism here. This was from when Devin's voice and production skills weren't half as good as they are now, and covers have never been his strong suite. It's good enough for a fan of Devy to enjoy it, but the heart of the song doesn't really translate so I can understand why Rush fans might not.
I'd reccomend everyone check out his own stuff - like The Death of Music, Bad Devil, Judgement, Triumph, Deep Peace, Supercrush... Devy's a genius in his own right.
@ViciousAlienKlown It's not supposed to be Geddy Lee. It's not supposed to be a pallate swap of Rush. And this isn't. That's why it's a cover song. And it works. And Devin's voice fits perfectly with it.
(((_{-_-}_))) these guys kickass, is that their name "rush studio tribute" ? the first time ive ever heard of them, very tight band, four guys right, thanks for the upload, i gota run its five o'five
Rush is one of my favourite bands; this is good too. I really like Devin's vocals, and I can't stop listening to this cover, but what the fuck was he thinking at 5:22?
I was about to click the like button, suddenly, wait, I'll make some comments in this channel. I have this album when they released. I think Portnoy was the 'mastermind' for this awesome project. Thumbs down now for Portnoy because he left Dream Theater.
i'd say devin was one of the seminal modal cathartic slipweights of calypso thrash
there are definitely a few covers that are better than the original. they sound bteer anyway. and that is what counts ..unless you're some kind of prog fusion tit
Amazing... nice.... some may say that the original is better... i think the same but... the feeling that they put in song.... wow.... wonderfull... deen is blowing the drums.....and the vocal is trully amazing.. nice work guys...
I appreciate the interpretation of the tune. The respect for Rush is evident in the performance. Instead of trying to evaluate it as better or not, I recommend looking for what these artists were able to bring to the song. The drumming is very impressive.
Like alot of songs, the vocals can ruin everything. The playing is actually good. The final note in the last solo, at 6:40 is a "must have to be there"...he didnt play it.
From the video description: "... Many Rush fans don't know this project exists..." I gotta say after hearing it, I still wish I didn't know about this "project."
You have to appreciate what this song and the whole project were - a bunch of great players of the day mashed together on a quickly produced project to have fun and show off in their love for Rush. If anybody is overplaying it's because they were asked to do. If mistakes and poor production are apparent, it's probably for lack of time and cash. I think Devin's performance showcases his abilities perfectly, and I have to hear him sing "Preservation" (5:20) over and over again. It cracks me up!
I almost made it to the end but my head was about to explode.
That being said, you people should stop picking on "SeeDutor". If he thinks this is better than the original, that is his opinion.
He may think dog vomit tastes better than cheesbugers, or having 10 sweaty fat guys rubbing their armpits all over him feels better than a hot asian girl giving him a full body massage. That is his opinion: even if it IS wrong!
I'm a huge fan of Rush amd a huge fan Devin Townsend. But this version isn't better. The production isn't that great. But i think if Devin would record it now, with his own musicians it would sound way better than this one.
leaving aside the Geddy vs Devin discussion, what's with the amateurish acoustic strumming? - I'd be embarrassed to lay that down. The rest of the track is fair - I wanted to like it more based on DT's other work.
leaving aside the Geddy vs Devin discussion, what's with the amateurish acoustic strumming - I'd be embarrassed to lay that down. The rest of the track is fair - I wanted to like it more based on DT's other work.
Idiocy is failing to accept and respect other people's opinions when it's CLEAR that they are interested in the subject or in the conversation.
When one doesn't give a damn and just spits out random judging with no foundation it's one thing. It's just a waste of time.
But when it's clearly heading another direction and YOU reach the point of being offensive that defeats the whole goddamn purpose. You refuse to communicate & get nothing out of it. But it's cool. I won't be wasting mine with you.
Devin made made this song even more powerful with his voice, than it already was.....This is truly my favorite version of the song. Devin can growl, scream, sing melodic, everything
Devin's performance is just fucking unbelievable. Hands down way better than Geddy's. Actually I think the overall cover sounds better than the original.
@SeeDutor ...WoW, are you serious? I listened and laughed when I seen your comment. The original is way ahead of this second rate cover. Sorry but 90s/grunge edgy doesn't translate into a decent Rush cover. Go back and try again...and then give up because you're not Geddy Lee. It doesn't even have the production value that the original had.
@ViciousAlienKlown I respect your opinion but personally I find the cover, like you said, edgier; musically edgy. Less restrained, which is a quality Rush explores brilliantly, just more energetic, which I appreciate a lot.
Along with the outstanding vocal performance I also find that the little thingies floating around add a lot to the whole concept; they obviously had time to think through.
Agreed on the production value, tho'. But I think the whole cover album kinda suffers from that.
How the devil do you consider Devin Townsend grunge? You do know that it was only a short lived movement that took place in Seattle and not a genre itself, right? Mr. Townsend hails from the cold wasteland of Canada. Far in distance and time from the grunge scene, plus his sound is pretty off of those bands that actually were part of the scene. I get that you don't think its as good as the original, but what you said is just plain ridiculous.
@SuperMrMalibog That's the thing, each has his background. For as long as there's a logical train of thought. So I would just like to know why do you find it moronic. Devin's sort of approach on singing or whatever pushes your buttons.
@SeeDutor The screaming is silly as hell. Maybe for a 13 year old pot head its cool. Not the worst thing i ever heard...Just kinda goofy. well really goofy. Its a headbanger version. Would you expect a normal person to enjoy this? no some goofy kids only
@SuperMrMalibog Normal. That word kinda... Hrm. I thought Rush were pretty uncommon themselves. But "normal" people do appreciate Devin Townsend. I don't see much point picking on the "silly screaming". But I got your impression.
@SeeDutor -This is like Disturbed or Trent Reznor during a cover of a Rush song. It works for you which is fine in and of itself. However this in NO WAY compares to Geddy's vocals. Geddy does not scream he sings. His voice is one of the most unique voices to come around EVER! The original is one of Rush's most underrated songs ever. The cover was not bad but you cannot say it's better than the original. Sorry, it's not even close
@tigrrwoodwannabe [1] Making a comparison and putting this in the same category as Disturbed is complete randomness, and excuse me, ignorance in trying to reference it to something BAD QUALITY or whatever you're trying to achieve.
It works for me, definitely, and especially knowing the original version. I don't even see the point in trying to argue why Geddy's voice is this or that when it's clear that Devin and Geddy have totally different approaches on singing.
@tigrrwoodwannabe [2] And actually that's PRECISELY what makes this cover way more interesting IMO in comparison with the original. It's much more stimulating and reaches way more colors in the spectrum. Also love the extra layers added. More atmosphere, overall more stimulating and richer mood.
@tigrrwoodwannabe [3] I think you fail to see the point in discussion. I love Rush, I'm just OPEN and I actually find very interesting what people made outta this song. Openness, acceptance and respect is what's prog is all about. Or Rush would have never become what they represent now. Or Magma. Or Genesis. Or Jethro Tull. C'mon, don't close doors on creativity!Plus, the cover is just FUN. Something that has been getting lost in music ever since.
I was fortunate to find this tribute album in the store shortly after it was released. I was like, 'Ok, I'll bite. Let's see what this is all about.' In a weird way, it's even better than Rush. Of course, it's one thing to perform the song and another to compose it, but this is one 'tribute' album that lives up to the hype. I think it's just a really strong endorsement of Rush as songwriters. Rush is touring again this summer, you know!!!!!
this was my first introduction to all things devy. I was a huge RUSH fan and had to goto the US to get this disk. On the way down there my best buddy introduced me to an artist called DevinTownsend...odd i hear hes on the Rush Tribute i am gettin.....and a devy fan was born !
I'll always be a fan of Devin but I thought his vocals were horrendously overwrought here.
On a more humorous note, "David Townson."

Doing a Rush song rarily works, the vocals are never on par with Geddy and this one fails in that respect.
