Helen is all politics. Always the academic. Try getting a bus in Auckland on Sunday. The public transport system is appalling and got far worse during her watch.
The busses here in sunny Bangkok are way better than the ones in Auckland an this is a developing nation.
the New Zealand media seem to be about the only national media that regularly report peak oil. They don't have much if any of their own, and they are a long way from anywhere. Good reasons to be more aware!
Unfortunately they let Helen get away with telling them that all they hold dear eg food, security, and the lives of their loved ones are coming to an end, because that is what peak production of oil is = the end of the world as we know it. and only 1 website and 1 local paper reported Helen's statement, to the best of my knowledge
Good comment. We are a long way from anywhere, probably why we are more aware of the problem. Then again, nearly everyone I know there, myself included, grows their own food... so when the shit (maybe) hits the fan, NZ would probably be quite a good, safe place to be.
LOVE the juxtaposition here. Nice. :)

At least she admits it... here in Germany they mostly ignore the topic.

New oil will be very expensive. There is massive investment in Canadian oil sands that cost over $60/barrel to produce.
The biggest oil field in the word, Ghawar, is almost spent.
