Great San Francisco band from the 80's. Lived there that decade to see this band a lot collectively n individually w other groups. Richie's nuts but once he puts his mouth on that horn it's all over. I'm from Manila originally n got to meet Bobby Enriquez several times in NYC before he passed. Don Pullem copped a lot of that way of playing from Bobby. Scott's sounding good here. It's the Vanguard. Possibly one of the greatest jazz bands to come out from the Bay Area.
oh yeah, dethrising, you are right, he was awesome then! wild and exciting! That energy is like a huge tidal wave coming on! I can feel it every time!
Anybody of you who have the guts to tear Richie down here, stand up and show you can do even half of this! You have no heart, no ears, no guts, just a big mouth! But yeah, I think only a genius can recognize another genius.... and not be jealous of the other person's great talent. So before you keep on bitching, get yourself a horn and humbly start practicing, then you'll get the message...
Richie is a genius on the alto horn... what else he is in his life, is only his very own responsibility.
@velvetpaws999 So anyone who doesn't like this garbage has no ears and just a big mouth hey.
Since I made the negative comment below (of which I totally stand by) I've had hate mail - people creating new accounts just to slag me off - morons following me around You tube making snide comments on anything I like - and all from people who don't even understand Bebop let alone can play it.
Richie Cole is not a genius. That title is reserved for Charlie Parker.
@velvetpaws999 2. Richie Coles music at its best is a mix of differen't styles including (but not exclusively) bebop phrasing. This is why Coles music is so accessible to a wide range of music lovers (not just jazz). Personally I don't think Coles technique is anything special, I've never heard him play anything I couldn't transcribe and play myself, However' he is a very good composer/arranger unique stylist and brilliant thermatic improviser.
@velvetpaws999 3, The reason why Im replying to your comment is I noticed that (unlike anyone else on this page) you listen to Chopin, So I'm assuming you have a knowledge of European Concert Music. You write in your comment against me that I have no heart or ears. Ok then you go and listen to Coles composition Candace Flower and comment on it what you hear and feel in your heart, Look at my comment - there is a lot more to say about this song than whats on the surface - think concert music.
i'm not that much into bebop (mostly swing) but richie is my favorite alto bebop player. another thing, i'm picky about drummers, but i really like this one
I remember catching Richie and this gang at the time in Trenton. Some of these cuts were released on a Muse LP. I had no idea there was a video. Thanks.
This is definitely a great band and Cole one of the more consummate alto players on the scene. For more of them circa the same period, check my channel.
this is damn awesome! never heard of anyone who blows like him. jazz is about free form expression. he made it groovy and entertaining, something that is lacking on most jazz bands. kudos to bruce forman! u are the man!
My comments were not a criticism of his playing. The boy can play, though not with the feeling of Phil Woods, sorry. I have no gripe with anyone being entertaining. Put it this way, I know him, and he has an oversized ego. Maybe he's changed since I last saw him, which was about the time this video wqas made. I hope so.
Richies playing is outstanding when he's in top form. Even when he's not, for that matter.
If y'all who are cutting him down think you can play better, do so. But I'll bet you can't.
What mean spirited comments fom some of you people who obviously don't know much about Richies history.
He's played Carnagie Hall 5 times & has played for Queen Elizabeth & Fidel Castro as well. Maybe some of you should do a little more research before you write your little barbed comments.
Richie's got chops, but that's all he's got. I don't care if he's entertaining, that's okay, but his solos have no originality. Sorry, just my opinion.
I cannot understand how anyone can think this is good. Cole has no idea how to play the blues. It should be called banishment blues and put into Room 101.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Listen to Charlie Parker, Lou Donaldson, Cannonball Adderley, Johnny Hodges, Sonn.... The blues is personal. I don't like this because I cannot hear any emotion. This is my personal feelings. If you do, fine Im wrong. - P.S. I do like some of Coles playing, but definitly not this.
conn6m.. I hear you. Note choices ,tone at times.Sure sticks out. You know when that "thing" is there, don't we!!!!It divides the innovators from the others! I'm glad this confirmed what I already knew. I just had a good laugh!
hm i heard your videos and to be honest get some chops before you slag ppl off ,if you cant hear the blues in this you need to turn your sax into a plant pot, realy you aint that good to be giving it the bigun
I love how people make smack *ss comments about musicians who entertain and get somewhere, can't play half as good themselves, then cry when no one listens to Jazz because everyone thinks Jazz is boring and snobby Richie was one of the few musicians who was keeping the Jazz traditional alive when everyone was going fusion and he was the MAN when he toured with Eddie Jefferson... Thx for posting !
Phil Woods is a pretty great alto main, but half the time he is "mailing it in." When Richie is halfway sober, he is killer, and even when he is not, he plays with 1,000X more feeling than Woods.
Nobody ever (well hardly anyone) dissed Dizzy for having fun with bop. If more players realized they were in the entertainment business mayve bop would have more of a following.
Hi Shimpei999, thanks for posting these videos... are you still around?
could you please, correct the title? It should be "Punishment" (U, not A)...
Thanks for correcting!
Keep posting more good videos!

Richie Cole is a joke. This is why people shouldn't say that he's a clone of Phil Woods, because I don't think Phil would play like that.
