Old school fix. Was doing this back with Sega CD and Dreamcast.

If you want a GOOD fix get 'Brasso' It's used for polishing trumpets. Works a bit better but some scratches are just too deep and need to be resurfaced with a proper machine.

I didn't have anything to lose, so I tried this on an old ruined PS2 game that would freeze during certain points of the game. After using toothpaste, it is still VERY scratched, but it smells minty and isn't freezing as of now. I dunno if it helped or I just got lucky.

This worked on me for my FinalFant X. There was a certain cutscene where the chracters would simply stop talking and I couldn't skip the scene or anything, after doing this I made it through the scene.

However, it didn't work on my Kingdom Hearts 2. the weird thing is my KH2 never had problems on my dad's ps2.

ANYWAYS, the best thing to do is buy a new game and TAKE CARE OF IT, because this trick won't permanently solve the problem, thanks for the video :) *plays FF X*

Inspired by your video I attempted your procedure. While it did not work, it did make the CD partially readable.  So I took it a step further. I used some wet/dry auto body sandpaper starting with 800, then 1200 and finally 2000 grit to remove the scratches. then I used some automotive polishing compound. This finally fixed my very damaged CD and it now works. But thanks for the inspiration.

You should wipe the disc from inner edge to outer edge, not circular motion. That technique is for vinyl.
