Try it after dark, it is really fun. If you search the sky on a clear night from the top you will always see at least one plane in the sky. You could be up there for an hour and see the flashing lights of planes every second of that hour. It is kinda neet. The top of Stone Mountain is my fav place in the Atlanta metro area.
If you cut off to the left at the halfway mark, there is an indian trail that goes up the steeper side...my uncle and I went up that one. It was pretty cool, but a little more difficult than the regular trail. It's still technically on the 'legal' side of the mountain, just a lot harder.
We stopped and climbed it on the way from Florida to D.C. It was drizzling so it was quite slippery but we made it. My wife was delighted to find, when we got to the top, that there was a ski-lift down. It broke my heart to inform her that I had left my wallet in the car. Funny video. Good job!
i'm going to be hiking up there when i get back. i need to get fit enough to do it because by the looks of it it's pretty hard but i know i can do it.
i live 2 minutes from the mountain its a lessing and a curse!! a constant reminder to walk up or walk the 5 miles around ..its hard being lazy when you can see it fom your back deck..DANG!!!
I love this place.......I live 2 minutes from there. Sad fact: An Emory University Student just died there (03/24/2010) due to an accident......R.I.P. Antony Edge.
the best part is the end when you get to the top, you can jump off or either use the trolley going down. wait awhile and go see the lazer show. i miss that place.
This hike kills my knees. I have to jump on the Cherokee Trail and then go up to the side of the main trail where there aren't so many rocks. But on a clear day it's a great view.
great video! although i now live in ft myers, FL. stone mountain was my "stairmaster" for over 20 yrs! i used to hike that rock twice everyday before i went to work. its a great workout. also the 5 mile loop arond the mountain makes for a great jog! i remember back in summer of 84 i wanted to see how many times i could hike it without stopping...made it 7 roundtrips before calling it a day! i miss stone mountain alot as i do atlanta..
Once you get to the top, just think, no matter what direction you look, some black person in Atlanta is victimizing another person.

I live right around the corner from the mountain, my kids hike it like a pro! as for me...one time was enough, but walking around the park is my fav.

I'm surprised nobody has tried to make a film on Stone Mountain. The terrain is certainly unique enough for a SciFi movie.
