  • Cas Haley is better... Just sayin.

  • Saw them n concert back in the day at the old JFK stadium in Philly with Joan Jett, REM & Madness and I still say this is their best song!

  • Two words. Cas Haley listen to his version

  • Check out Cas Haley's version

  • the best raggae song I've ever heard... for real... :)

  • just can't understand them, really... :)

  • don't know what's with this 4 people... just don't know.... :)

  • If you wanna see another drummer that replicated Copelands drum sound in the 80's look up Brazilian band Paralamas. Their drummer João Barone is amazing like Copeland. For example watch this one watch?v=fzYoSwa8trI

  • I can remember this broadcast and so much more about the early days of the Police.

A must see is Everyone Stares by Stu. The Police Inside Out.

Great walk down memory lane, thanks.

  • I love this song :)

  • From 1987 to 1993 I wanted to be "The Police"...

  • Ja dit kan ik me nog heel goed herinneren LIVE op TV bij CountDown

  • Just brilliant so youthful so loaded

  • Fuck it:,greai is the ultimative superlative of great!

  • Once again: just greai beyond belief!

  • The Police at the time they really were a band. GREAT!

Regatta de Blanc is my favourite, because although Sting wrote most of the songs, during that period they seemed to have been developed from the sessions of the three of them during that time. I might be wrong. Beds too big without you is acclaimed to have been written in 1975, but in the form is was recorded, it could only have in that constellation. Very rare meet of talent.

  • @xxxyourxxxyouxxx Some of their songs are surpisingly old (i.e before Police) if sources tell. E.g "I Burn For You" was around "Reggatta" but they decided to leave it be because it did not fit their style they were developing up to "Zenyatta". Indeed Reggatta is their most band album if tad uneven but the Copeland songs have hilarious lyrics. The mono version of Bed's too big... is superior to album version. Somehow I feel this song has stood time better than "Message In A Bottle".

  • this sounds just great !!!, i like it very much !!!

  • Old Times.....the «first step» on the " Moon" .....

  • im a 12 year old girl who loves da police r....sucks to be them

  • do you see the quarter notes on the half note ... that if fricking beyond incredible!

  • The epitome of cool.

  • stewart copelands offbeat drumming is just friggin awesome

  • @marcelgrosser Pretty straight dub reggae drumming, actually. But he does it well, I have to agree!

  • @marcelgrosser I concur...

  • this song is amazing. ive listened to it countless times. very simple, yet so euphoric. reminds me of when i was younger walking home from my old girlfriends house, thinking about her

  • Excellent performance of this beautiful, melodic, minimal tune. Later versions are waay too produced. The sparseness, restraint and faithfulness to the original are really complimentary.

  • @airfrance96 I wonder what The Police might be able to do nowadays thinking another trio Rush who launch a lot of things live using MIDI and various other gadgets. I mean that they were imo on their peak at this time as a band.

  • This totALLY reminds me of Jeannie (Einnaej) in 9th grade. Jr. High School 141 .... Riverdale, NY .... we wrote our passed notes in class backwards & in circles .... (stoners much ??) good times yo !

  • What sound?the firework sound?

  • I get the feeling that Andy and Sting are thinking "we gotta get that electronic effect away from Stewart before the next show" -- like a teacher takes away a toy from a kid in school. You don't hear it in later live performances. :P

  • @BipolarBowler lol That's funny. :-) They actually were still using that effect on the round the world 1980 Tour. Glad Stewart finally stopped using it. It's definitely a bit silly. :-)

  • @BipolarBowler I was thinking the same thing! No doubt Sting freaked out later on. I can hear the cussing now, can't you?

  • What hi-hats is Stewart Copeland using in this show?

  • @BipolarBowler: Paiste 602 formula medium sound-edge hi-hat

  • My bad again. Andy Summers is the guitarist. Stewart Copeland the drummer

  • @PANDOSING Get your wikipedia notes mixed up huh? ;D

  • My Bad. Andy Summers is the drummer with Jazz leanings. Stewart Copeland is the guitarist that was a member of Curved Air

  • My Bad

  • The Police disguised themselves as a new wave band when in fact each member was a master musician on their instruments. Sting and Copeland were Jazz musicians and the guitarist played in a "Prog" band called "Curved Air" before being a member of the Police. This is why they sound so damn good!

  • @PANDOSING Actually, Copeland was a member of Curved Air, not Summers. Haha

  • Two stupid motherfuckers need to get laid.

  • i fucking love this band.

  • The man could make a rickenbacher bass cry like an angel. Do you see the kit the drummer has to create those sounds!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @soulous1 That's an Ibanez.

  • This is simply genius. What happened to all the good bands?

  • @audiotrax2000 thats the big question!!!

  • *-3

  • Sting -3

  • never seen this footage before. good stuff

  • The band more completely than ever, despite having only three members.

    But geniuses are three:

Stewart with beats that no one had ever dared to do, technique and perfection, know just what I did.

Andy, the guitarist with agility and creativity, the inventor of some effects, and the famous candied notes.

And Sting, lead singer with the right voice to the rhythm and the right band, and there's still a show piece on the bass.A best band in the world in my opinion.

  • this sting usually play this song on a fretless or upright?

  • Timelsess...

  • Steart and Andy are tight.

  • Fuck all those chumps who say Cas Haley's version is "better" than the Police.

    This is the one!

  • @larkydozer the only one!

  • Still good today as they were then

  • good shot at andys pedal board

  • Great telecaster sound!

    Breathtaking, the police.

  • The whistle sound is made by the drum pad on the right of Stewart's octobans.

  • Too bad these guys fought like cats and dogs, they were one of the best bands of the entire rock era.

  • @grandpadewey Amen!

  • Sting is awesome when he goes "EEEEEEYYYOOOOOOOOoooooooooooooooooooooooo!"

  • Great song. Almost reggae.

  • The whistle is probably something triggered by a drum pad or perhaps a bass pedal, not really a guitar-like effect. The pedalboard seems to be made by Pete Cornish as it looks like these made for Gilmour. These pdalboards had the actual vintage pedal circuits (modified, sometimes, and sometimes more than one circuit of the same effect with diff. settings) "embedded" on them, these are just on/off switches and not really memory banks or something.

  • bakan la cancion

  • I live in the town that is right next to Voorburg, only I was born a little too late.

  • Stewart is still sooooo Hot! OMG! what he does with his hands....gotta go now...lol

  • Where did you get this video? I love old Police stuff. Can I get this in a regular format? Joe. California.

  • HUGE talents.

  • Love the Pete Cornish pedal board switch system Andy had back then. That's when they first started making them. I'll bet it's still running smoothly somewhere. They built that shit to last back then.

  • @RubHerSoul1 The gear is to die for. I think David Gilmour had a later (larger) version of that pedal. Don't even get me started on Sting's bass. That's when Ibanez made their best basses between '79 and '82.

  • @DeathMetalDouglas68 Yes he did. A lot of great guitarists had to have one after Andy Summers had one made. I think he was the first guy to get one. Not sure.

  • wtf, who made that sound at 0:56 ?

  • @lamecasuelas2 Either Sting, Andy or Stuart made the sound. They had tons of pedals and gadgets on the ground that you can't see too well. I'm kinda thinking Stuart had one of his octoban drums (the long black tubular ones) triggering it for this particular tune.

  • @DeathMetalDouglas68 yes i know that, that´s what i have no idea of who made those sounds, stewart and his delay units, andy and his pedals, and later his roland guitar sythesizer

  • @DeathMetalDouglas68 are you talking about that whistle sound? its gotta be copeland there is a shot around 3:55 where he hits the octoban and it whistles

  • i expected real police walking on moon...

  • exelente version saludos desde chile !!!!!

  • See, I'm a writer, and I love to write about what I love. Sting and the pureness of his voice and the melodic tone of this cut, takes you to a place that almost makes you feel like you are jamming with some cats from Kingston. Sting has rhythm. Stewart plays like he has an adrenaline high, and Andy is the treble...a very nice brew.

  • S-T-E-W-A-R-T C-O-P-E-L-A-N-D!!!

  • so beautiful sound !!! wow !!! wonderful song!!!

    tank you for posting !!!

  • The world is running down, but at least I got to see the Police back then, I get to take that to my grave!

  • MASSIVE

  • I've been on stage with a lead singer that "gives you the willies" but non of this caliber. The Sting is the real deal

  • The man is a machine. They were and still are a trio of undisputed talent. No one can attempt to duplicate this song. Its riff comes from the heart of soul of each musician's cue, ska, reggae, calypso, The Police...the ingredients of pure audible ectasy.

  • @jazzytds Spot on.

  • the fast part idk how the fuck he doesnt screw up while singing.

  • the guitarist seems to be extremely waste of drugs!

  • io,iooo,io,iooo,io,iooo......magic sound :)

  • you're so vain, Sting...

  • cas haley is awesome

but...he's just playing a cover, he didnt create this masterpiece.

  • @dv91pr ERm no, he's not. lol

  • agree with u man

  • great vid i love it . one of my fav

  • 100% PURE MUSIC HOW IT "s MENT TO BE !!

  • Just gives you the willies!

  • a bad day for sting's voice is better than most other singers in the world could ever hope for...

  • those guys look so damn cool

  • he didnt sing that bad he just didnt his best

  • fette sache

  • Keep it up.. your johnson.. keep it up..

  • voice a little out of tune in some parts? great clip, great song, great band

  • yeah but it's really hard to sing... especially when he hits that high c in the verses

  • Only hard to sing for SmilinShadow. Not for the Stink.

  • if it was that easy for him he wouldn't have started playing it a half step tuned down a few years later;)

  • Take also in mind that he's playing Fretless which is also a difficult to master instrument, very easy to sound off key on.

  • It is interesting to notice the amount of gadgetry they had onstage. Sting has pedal-synth with controls in the bass while Andy has huge effectsboard. Yet looking the videos here they never go over the top with them.

  • @konked Well said Konked. I don't think Andy ever really used more than about 3 effects at once. I'll never stop loving his wonderfully shimmering guitar sound here.

  • @WouterJ

u obviousley know nothing of bass

i can play anything on a fretless as i can on a regular bass and i dont even practice on a fretless

  • @WouterJ Ahh but the secret of the fretless is if you hit a wrong note, you just slide right up into the right note and it sounds awesome.

  • @WouterJ That's right! It's good to hear somebody else talking about Sting's fantastic fretless bass playing (which he did hit a clunker on from time to time.) I used to play fretless and sing in a band, and that stuff ain't easy. I was really disappointed when he stopped playing fretless.

  • he is not rlly out of tune, hes just changin it up

  • @gm1974 you could do better right NOTTT

  • Great clip, thanks for uploading this :)

  • In this clip , Sting has skipped lyrics and screw up the verses . You know what ; I'm still a big Police fan !!!!!

  • excelente, un clasico.

  • damn, almost 40 years ago.

  • ????? 30 :-)

  • o ya. XD

  • 30, skipping math class? xd

  • First bass line I ever learned. Love love love this song, and the band.

  • amazing.. greetings from Poland

  • Cas cancelled Sting and Police outright.

  • Stupid uneducated remark! You have no knowledge of the history and importance of the Police.

  • not really even thou u prefer the commercialisation of the american idol and i have to admit i like his voice but i still prefer the police's version due to how the bass and guitar effects blend in.

  • i'm on cloud 7th heaven goouk2009

  • One of the greatest and most intelligent baselines ever!!! Great great great legendary song!!!!!

  • shut the fuck up all with Cas Haley

  • There's only one name for drumming...

  • They're so full of energy! Thanks for sharing!

  • Andy Summers

  • stewart copeland

  • @TriggerHappyMariachi nah dats travis barker playin not dat guy u say, i no cuz my frend told me cuz travis barker was started in da police band he mad it gud now it shit hoouse. faggot!!!

  • @MsPissinmyass123 Grammer are not for me.

  • q buen tema desde ARGENTINA

  • What an awesome drummer S.C. is!

  • haha i think Cas Haley sings better this song

  • u think wrong.

  • ; )

  • Cas Haley has deifferent voice, and i agree with u ;)

  • man I want that bass

I'd have stings spirit guiding me

  • Man I've got that bass :-)

    Ibanez Musician fretless MC-940

Very heavy though, IMPOSSIBLE to sing at the same time excepted... Sting !

  • Roger Waters played bass and sang as well...

  • XD I have problems singing with my normal Memphis Bass. Guess It'd be impossible if that thing is heavier. Is it more difficult to play a frettless bass? like... less precise?

  • I love that bass but ive got an entirely black version of it

  • well there's the kickdrop but that's football when you drop the ball and as it bouces you kick it..then there's the one drop of acid and that will blow your mind so carefull there...then there's the one drop which i believe is ,the bass drum on the 3rd beat which can be heard just as the song starts which comes form reggae and other african music hera it on the intro but during the verse he is playing it on the second a fourth instead of a snare as would be normal copeland mixed it all up!

  • I think Andy wears the same outfit on the cover of the Regatta album.

  • what do you mean with"yeah right" and "what exactly is the one drop?"

    Did i miss something.

    CU JB

  • The one drop is a reggae drum style that I believe emphasis on the and of one. It's something that is found in music from the Police.

  • Bob Marley's Waiting in Vein is a good example of this playing style having Carlton Barrett who was master of the style on drums.

  • Good try but the city is called Den Haag not Denhag. This concert was not in Den Haag but very closeby in the village nearby callled Voorburg. I should know. I was there at 17 years old.

  • Thanks for that, I'll change it now :s

  • the venue "De vliegermolen" was (is doesn't excist anymore) was a small gym and swimming pool. Voorburg is a small village. The manager of de vliegermolen had very good connexions in the music-industry. In this twobit venue played,Crosby Stills Nash and Young and the Who a.o.. Very odd.

Some social/musical history. I thought would find that interesting to know

    cu

    Jasper Bosch from holland

  • yeah right

  • Copland is the genius behind this band.he took a "one drop" and made it main stream pop!!!!!! amazing! we do a police trio..search urajokemc and let us know what you think of our 2nd police show.yes i am the drummer and its an honor to even try and play this!

  • what exactly is the one drop?

  • i wish i was older so i could have seen them live

  • Thank you SO very much for sharing this!

  • The Police at their hippest. God, I wish I was couple of years older, then I would have seen them on this tour!!!!

  • stewart copeland is a drum god!!!

  • I think that this concert footage was used as the disc one concert on the police live album.

  • Disc 1 was in Boston. Disc 2 was in Atlanta.

  • This should be Denhag, Holland if teh date is correct - thanks for this!

  • Thankyou for telling me where it was filmed, I knew it was European but it was bugging me that I didn't know for certain.

  • where did you get this ? By the way I'm French if you need any help ...

  • I can't remember now, but I definately couldn't find any other Police videos on the site.

  • beautiful version of this song... wasn't this right before Regatta came out?

  • Yes it was, Reggatta was released in October of the same year.

  • this is a neat performance! i've been hoping footage like this would turn up for years!

  • Me too! I had to wade through the website where I got it from because it was all written in French.... Why did I ever drop French at school?

  • nice i took french too, lol also if this was written in Brooklyn or Pittston PA it would be "Walking On Da Moon!"

  • wonderfull bravi
