Alfred Newman stands alonside Elmer Bernsteinas the two greatest composers from the 60s and thats a huge wrap given the other brilliant composers around then Bronislau Kaper, Alex North, Dimitri Toimkin among the better ones. They should build a second Mt Rushmore for those guys at least they gave us more enjoyment than some of the presidents
Alfred Newman's last score .. and listen closely -- can you hear the tribute to Gershwin and many others that inspired his work -- throughout the score.
@SFConifer In L.A. for decades there was the exact same recording. "The white zone is for loading and unloading of passengers only. No parking." You can hear it in many films and TV shows.
As a child, I traveled all over the world in Boeing 707-320B "Intercontinental" Clippers, and I had pretty-much made up my mind what "I was going to be" when I grew up. Seeing "Airport", and hearing Alfred Newman's score "put-me-over-the-edge", and today I am an airline pilot flying Boeing 737-700 "Next Generation" airliners (a high-tech version of the same plane in the movie). "Remind me to thank Mr. Boeing".
for the first time since this movie came out joe patroni and his anyway shes gonna get it couldnt get me out of snow no matter how loud id play it. you think the neighbors think im crazy?
This film was big stuff back in'70... it grossed a hundred million (with Dean Martin taking ten percent of the gate!). It was this film (and it's in-theatre re-issue a couple of years later) that ushered in the era of the blockbuster that was cemeted by "Jaws" and "Star Wars" five or six years later. It didn't get much bigger than "Airport".
it's till a great movie--too bad all the ripoff spinoffs have confused it's reputation in the heads of moviegoers. Quality work all the way around--great screenplay, great editing, great dramatic buildup. And of course, that cast...
This was a great score by Newman. It's muscular (it could almost be a Jimmy Page riff), vast, romantic, and it gives you the feeling of a large airport with the live of the people working and going through it. It also makes me remember the days when it was made. The one shot of the parkinglot full of cars in the winter. Flying was special then and in the early '60's. Men wore suits and women wore skirts and heels.
I was flying from Washington DC back in the late 80's and our flight was in a terrible thunderstorm . From the sound and how the interior lite up I'd say we were hit by lightning. Sounded like a bomb it was so loud. We made an emergency landing in cleveland and the airline put us up. Got to the Hotel turned on the TV and what's the first thing I see??? This movie!!!! Just as the bomb has exploded!!! Truth IS stranger than fiction!!! BTW I still love the movie.
In a long, distinguished and highly-respected career in cinema spanning more than forty years, Alfred Newman firmly established himself in the first rank of film composers & arrangers. At twenty, he began ten years on Broadway, conducting musicals by Gershwin, Rodgers, & Kern. In 1930, he went West with Irving Berlin, and the rest, as they say, was history. "Airport" was Newman's final score (he died shortly after the recording sessions for the film) - not a bad way to leave the stage.
As corny as this may sound (no pun intended), this very song launched my career in aviation ... 40 years ago this coming Sun.08 AUG 2010 when I took my very first flying lesson :) My Mom and Dad took me to see this movie at the ripe old age of 15 years old, and after seeing it, I was never the same since ... 1,200 hours later with a commercial, multi-instrument rating and an A&P with IA ... my, how theme song can influence and precocious 15 year old :)
Just finish watching this movie on DVD and forgot how good it really was. Helen Hayes was hilarious and well deserved Oscar win. Great opening Theme song.
@fls13ec Patton is an ok movie, but I still say Airport should of one. A bomb stricken airliner is more entertaining than a general playing the same role from Dr. Strangelove basically.
Airport would of won Best Picture if not for Patton being released the same year. The same thing would of happen to Audrey Hepburn with Wait Until Dark, she would of won best actress if not for Guess Who's Coming To Diner coming out the same year with Katherine Hepburn.
Patton is a great movie and deserved the win, but Airport launched two different genres, the disaster movie and the laugh-a-minute movie satire, and they're both still going strong today. Not too many films you can say that about.
This movie was great! I loved it as a kid and now that I'm an adult who travels all the time, I realize that this was back in the day when Airlines treated you like they were happy to have you with them on the flight. Now the only way to get that treatment is to be a frequent flyer member (which I am).
Yes, I agree this is a SUPERB movie soundtrack theme - but, what else would you expect from the Newman family? They've given us some of the best music known to man! Their music has graced us for over 7 decades, thus far. Good stuff! Thanks to LICHBKLN for his comments - I was about 6 when I saw this movie for the first time. Lancaster hated it - such is. It inspired me to become a test pilot! The PAR approach scene is VERY accurate!
This theme is definately one of the best arrangements ever. I remember seeing this movie on March 16th, 1970 at Radio Cty Music Hall, Rockefeller Center. A school outing on a Saturday. I was 11. I'm 50 now. Loved it then, still love it now. And yes, it does stay in your head- especially when your on your way to the "Airport".
I'm glad I'm not the only one who hears this them in his head when going to the airport. I work at LAX and I've been hearing this theme everyday for 10 years when I drive our company vehicle on the tarmac. A very well written composition that brings the image of a busy aiport to life.
great movie....great soundtrack...and a young and hot Jacqueline Bisset....of course the only scary thing about this movie is the thought of Dean Martin being the co-pilot..
Although it's pretty antiquated now, I've always loved this movie and the original book on which it was based. And yes, I always think of this theme when heading for the airport!!
For anyone who is old enough to remember this movie, whenever they are at the airport, this is the music playing in their head in the background. It literally changed people's perception of aviation and the airports. The new airport projects of the '70's can probably thank this movie in large part for their funding. The pilots can thank this movie for their hefty pay checks.
There was another movie happening in a plane. A man put a bomb in a plane that was set up to explode when the plane would go back down to a certain altitude. Anyone knows the name of that movie? Thanks.
great music even better movie got me hooked on aviation when i saw 38 years ago.getting old ,when i fly ask the captain do remrember this movie anser is usally no.joe ,george kennedy has gotten me out of alot of snow drifts"anyway shes going to take it"
One of my all time favorite movies. Great book and nice adaptation. I had an old boss who lived in Minneapolis at the time and went down at night for the filming. Got into the crowd scene. My Uncle worked as a mechanic for Northwest at Minneapolis and told me about the filming as well.

@sigzor85 Not what I remember in that accident and that was when I was 4 years old 1969. What happened when they argued with the Aviator corporate employed and almost killed a politicain. The pilot became over exhausted with the big shot drunken Hollywood movie star investor as said to big time RCA contracts. No contact was made with any airport. The movie stars sun later died in a airplane accident. RCA went banrupt. Kennedy was known to behave in this mannor. Don't let it happen to you
