clex is truly dead. it's sad the writers spent seven years giving clark's and lex's relationship something the comic books never managed to do in over forty years--emotional depth. clark really doesn't have an emotional connection to jimmy olsen and he barely mentions pete ross. how great it would have been if clark and lex managed to maintain their brotherhood even if lex was the adversary to clark's alter-ego. now that would have been a relationship pregnant with possibilities. sad end.
there was so much true emotion missing from this scene. if all there is in the live-action episodes is clark/superman and lex/supervillian fighting against one another endlessly, then it's just the comic book one-dimensional theme with real people acting out the panels. when we last saw lex he was cradling clark in his arms telling him that he loved him. if there's only animosity and no regret or feelings between clark and lex, then there's no human, emotional depth which is truly needed.
I don't know why, but at 2:30, I got chills and REALLY felt like Lex had become the Lex in the mythos. Truly evil. The way Michael said that line...oy.
I always say that Lex is Clark's greatest adversary is because no other person on Earth has the guts or the jealous rage to go up against Superman. Heck! Lex practically says it himself in the finale.
This scene was amazing. Sheer brilliance. The finale wouldn't have been the same without Lex and the show wouldn't have had that incredible finish without him.
@Hacking360Tutorials Technically he didnt far from it, Lex wants to be greatness he wants to be known and how can he be if darkseids ends it all? He NEEDED clark to save the world and become that hero so he can be the great Villain to him. Lex has no compassion at all cept towards himself. His image to the world is everything to him.
@Hacking360Tutorials because like Lex said, a villain is only as great as his hero, so basically, if he could get Clark to become the great hero he's supposed to be, he can be a great villain too.
@Hacking360Tutorials Because Lex's plan to achieve greatness and fame (infamy?) is to make a name for himself as Clark's nemesis, which he can only do if Clark becomes a hero by saving the world from Darkseid first. It's no good for Lex if someone else beats Clark; he has to be the one that bests him, nobody else.
Awesome scene. I love how they made Lex into the person who finally pushes Clark beyond who he is and making him realize that, it wasn't Clark who would be great but Superman. Lex seems to have this odd compassion for Clark here, and I think that's what makes it so interesting.
Ditto on Rosenbaum coming back. You couldn't have started the mythology of Superman without him.
Wow, Michael Rosenbaum looks as if he NEVER left the series, was it 2 years ago? He seems ageless as Lex LUthor! I'm glad Rosenbaum agreed to do the finale, it wouldn't be the same without Lex Luthor.
I loved this scene. This is def one of the best scenes in smallville. When lex said "great men are defined by their enemies" shivers were sent down my spine. This scene set the path for the epic clark vs lex rivalry
i loved this scene. definitely one of the epic moments in smallville. "great men in the world have always been defined by their enemies" their quote sent shivers down my spine
This finale would not have been as great as it was had Lex not returned. There is no Superman mythology without Lex Luthor. They're perfect rivals for each other.
Lex perfectly summed up their future rivalry especially with: We have a destiny together, Clark, only on different sides. And so begins their life-long good vs. evil battle.
Thank goodness Michael Rosenbaum came back! I missed him so much! No one plays Lex better than he does!
@tunapup1 U do know that this returning lex was the perfect clone right ,as well as when he killed test she sticked him with a neurotoxin to forget his memories and later, finally lex became president of the usa.
I think this was my favorite part out of the whole two hours. These guys always had the best conversations. Lex's epiphany is he can never be Clark or even his equal, so he's decided to do the next best thing and be his worthy adversary. He's gonna become great by going the distance with the good guy. Oddly inevitable given how they've written him all these years. But then he showed that he's still human by encouraging Clark to save the world. Pure Lex!
@fatibel42 ... VERY well said and I agree... Because in fact he (Lex) does not want to destroy the world... but his anger for Clark will supersede everything else...
"that's the thing about memories...you can't forget them"
Well, apparently you can. LOL

He's basically now saying "Our enmity will be the stuff of legends" - the exact opposite of what he said in Pilot.
