i ran my 40 today for practice...i got a 4.89...i did way better then last season workouts i was at a 5.32...but the best workouts i say from expeirence is stretching and steps....help alot

Trying to take as long and as fast a stride as possible to increase top speed. Worked for me (granted, it took 2 years of practice) Started with a 4.56seconds, ended with 4.29 on track with cleats... not bad for a guy with a 32" inseam...
There's loads of shit about Usain Bolt doing 3.86, no way Usain starts slow then about 50 metres into his 100m he gose fast. Someone like Jason Gardner would be good at this.
yeah speed ladders r ok, but u need to work on actually opening up and running. try to get ur hand on a parachute so training with that resistance will help u with ur body lean as well as ur strength and endurance.

im about the same size as u im 5 10 180 and i run a 4. 45, one of the best ways to work on yr speed and explosion is to run stairs, it is better for you that running up hill cus it makes u get your knees up, also when running your 40, go in a 3 point stance, sum ppl do 4 but that normally puts to much weight forward and u spend to much time trying to regain balence, pump as hard as u can with your arms and try to get your legs to keep up, this should help u
well depending on how old you are but if you ran a 4.9 it would be possible to get 4.5 but it depends on the way you train its not all genetics, hard work as a lot to do with it plus 40 speed does not account for top speed so if you can outrun most people then dont worry bout it to much focus on getting quicker if thats the case

If you add the .27 or hand time and take out the timers reaction time. But thats a good start to have a good 40 down the road.

the faster you throw your arms back the faster your legs will go... high knees is also important it gives you more power and longer strides. Then you also want to work out your hamstring muscles and your ass muslces. seated leg press is the best machine to work all the muscles you need to be quicker... thats all I know. I'm white and I run a 4.4 40 and before I worked out I only ran a 5.1 so apparently it's working.

acquire a proper starting position. Keep a good drive phase. and cycle your legs over your knees. Almost like doing high knees and butt kicks at the same time. Also being flexible will help with your strides.

Definately Power CLeans and deadlifts (Olympic lifters have the fastest 10 yard dash in the world b/c they are so explosive) and loose some fat with conditioning and Flexibility definately helps.
Only the elite run 4.5's or lower in High School, them and the little skinny, scrawny ass track kids who's speed go to waste. Unless you're athletic and are one of the elite at your school your speeds are irrelevant because chances are you can't put those speeds to proper use athletically speaking.

concentrate on your hamstrings when you workout...and do quick explosive movements in all you lowerbody workouts and slow concentrated movements on the negetive. most important watch your form. my biggest mistake in high school was poor form...your about the same age as my little brother and youd be surprised at how fast some1 your age can improve your speed and add muscle

actually if you strecth to much youre muscls get o long and you will start to run slower so only strecth to a certan point if you want to get youre max speed(beacause it takes longer for youre muscle to retract)

It is possible that a light lean runner can run as fast, or faster than Reggie Bush. 4.4 is only a great 40 time for a world class football player carrying around 40 lbs of extra muscle.

the faster you throw your arms back the faster your legs will go... high knees is also important it gives you more power and longer strides. Then you also want to work out your hamstring muscles and your ass muslces. seated leg press is the best machine to work all the muscles you need to be quicker... thats all I know. I'm white and I run a 4.4 40 and before I worked out I only ran a 5.1 so apparently it's working.

hey jono i run a 4.28 40yd and a 21.7 200m. 6'2 190. And i am attending Rice university on a full scholarship for football. To improve your 40yd time. You need to do the following.
acquire a proper starting position. Keep a good drive phase. and cycle your legs over your knees. Almost like doing high knees and butt kicks at the same time. Also being flexible will help with your strides.

anyone have any tips on how i can get my 40 down. im a linebacker/de/offensive tackle for my high school. I can tackle with the best of them and im strong enough to play D1 football but i need my 40 to be at least a 4.8 or 4.9. Any tips would be greatly appreciated

Definately Power CLeans and deadlifts (Olympic lifters have the fastest 10 yard dash in the world b/c they are so explosive) and loose some fat with conditioning and Flexibility definately helps.

Only the elite run 4.5's or lower in High School, them and the little skinny, scrawny ass track kids who's speed go to waste. Unless you're athletic and are one of the elite at your school your speeds are irrelevant because chances are you can't put those speeds to proper use athletically speaking.
