Thank you so, so much for posting this. This was my all-time favorite documentary as a little kid and seeing it now as an adult is just a wonderful experience.
when I was 5 or so I spent my summer days at a family friend's house, their son who was my age had this on VHS I loved it and tried to watch it whenever I could.
Oh, SO awesome!! I remember taping this when it was originally on TV. I watched it constantly as a kid. Impressive stop-motion. I think, in a lot of respects, it looks better than the cheap CGI that they use in docs these days.
Awesome documentary - I remember taping this and playing it back - over and over again as a young boy then running outside to play in the dirt with my plastic dinosaur toys...the cherry on top was that it was narrated by the late great Superman himself- Christopher Reeves... Thank You...and Rest with God...
This 1985 docu "Dinosaur" was also something I used to watch all the time on VCR - especially because of Tippitt's realistic animation of Deinonychus hunting in a prehistoric jungle and his brilliant use of dramatic camera angles to heighten the drama. It was the best prior to Jurassic Park's version of Deinonychus incorrectly termed Velociraptor.
When I was a kid I was obsessed with anything about Deinonychus. A prehistoric reptile version of a pack of wolves hunting down a single Struthiomimus was awesome to watch as a child pre-CGI films. Phil Tippitt is such an underated artist.
There was a book called Deinonychus - The Terrible Claw by Beverly Halstead which had awesome illustrations and description of Deinonychus .
I didn't realise as a child that Superman hosted this Dinosaur docu. EDr006H :- Thank you so so much for posting this show and sharing it on youtube - I searched ages ago on Youtube but no-one had posted at that point. It takes me back. I showed my kids it as they are now going through dinocraze. The stop-go animation highlights of various dinosaur films is also a good highlight.
This documentary was ahead of its time. The animation is simply awesome! A lot of great interviews and commentary from some of the best paleontologists out there. Dale Russell's "dinosauroid" thought experiment totally creeped me out as a kid. I used to think there was one of those living behind my door when I was little. Now I'm an adult and because of it I still have a fascination with reptilian humanoids.
@GrantHarding Def stop-go animation should be revived. The ease of CGI has sometimes lessened the artistry / realism in film. Everything is too shiny / bright and is obviously computer animated. Porper use of Stop-go motion gave it a 3d depth you cant imitate on PC. Although the earlier use of CGI mixed with motion puppetry like Jurassic Park worked as the less is more worked.
i remember this was part of the Dinosaur Stomp series on the Discovery Channel

I actually prefer stop motion animation to CGI. Honestly looks more real to me.

@saintrith YOu can see how Tippitt would have an influence on film depiction of dinosaurs much more later in his work on Jurassic Park
