  • "you can ride this train blah blah." .really?

  • kinda reminds me of the Blue comet that used to run on the Jersey Central.

  • @pennyf9 It reminds me of the Blue Comet too! :)

  • I would like if the healight was mounted on top of the smokebox and the bell where it used to be on the boiler. I like the blue paint though! That 6 chime sounds real good, or is it a 5 chime? I don't remember.

  • This was awesome. I thoroughly enjoyed every second of watching this. I get emotional at times over beautiful things. And this has literally brought tears to my eyes. Whoever is responsible for the upkeep and the keeping of this engine running, I thank you. And the videographer, what an outstanding job.

  • Love the color of the train!! Beautiful blue!

  • (Looks)

That Thing At Strasburg Would Be Epic.

  • Great video Joe, and also a great whistle. However, I still say the B&M "grower" whistle sounds much better.

  • I have watched many steam train videos and this is, by far, one of the very best! The audio and video are of superior quality. Nicely done, my friend! :o)

    Dan

  • Nice Job! Makes me want to head over to see this unit! Good work!

  • This engine is absolutely terrible. The headlight is the worst part of it. The bell sounds like crap. I want the one that they had tested back in the december testing

  • whats up with the steam coming out of the side?

  • Very nice!

  • man, what a beautiful sounding whistle, whcich whistle is that?

  • It's reading flattop 6 chime.

  • Gorgeous locomotive omfg haha..

  • Has any company made a scale version of this engine and coal car yet for model railroaders? That kit would be well worth the money.

  • @gr8pumpkin If they had something like that, I'd buy it instantly!

  • Nice.

  • I've seen other videos where the 425 "scorches the ballast" at what appears to be around 45-55 mph.

What is the track speed for the R&N?

  • i have question: does the 425 belong to a single railroad, or goes to different ones? or does it do excursions on mainlines?

  • It is owned by the Reading, Blue Mountain, and Northern Railroad.

  • All I can say is OH MY GOD!

    WHAT A BEAUTIFUL ENGINE!

  • Looked much better during the 80's on the BM&R.

  • I agree with you WRailfan, I like the Light when it was on the hood, but with it being centered, it looks like a retard verison of the Blue Comet Steam Engine

  • Well it may look different to you guys. But the engines been restored back to her original state. The "knock" PRR style headlamp was added to the locomotive when it ran in Louisiana. Now its back to its original GM&O style headlamp and overall stylings. I actually think they did a stand up job restoring it.

  • 1st off, it was originally for the GM&N, and also it doesn't have any of the neat features from the original 425. Now the only similarity between the 2 versions is the number, they might as well change the number to it

  • The engine was built with a high-mounted headlight, not centered. Historically, the bell was never on the smokebox (where it is now).

It was changed to have a centered light some time in its career, but the bell position never changed until R&N moved it in May 2008.

  • Im just sayin because 425 wasn't meant to burn that type of coal

  • this train belongs in new jersey to make the blue comet train alive again...

  • mmmm well she's stayin in Pennsylvania ;)

  • yes she is. What type of coal does she burn though?

  • What is R and N's slogan??? Road of anthrecite.

  • yes, but it burns bituminous!

  • Still Coal fired?

  • beautiful locomotive

  • why is the headlight in the center i like it better at the top, also i like the 261s old whisle alot better then its new one

  • As always another good one JoMiFu. See you trackside this year. This is the BEST place for steam left! See & hear steam the way it was and should be!

  • when I die and go to heaven. i will be driving this train all day long haha

  • Not if I get there first Ha Ha , but I'll share !:D

  • oh yeah? well i actualy stood in the cab, when i was like 5 in 87

  • that whistle sound suspiciously similar to the one Steamtown used on CP 2317 through the 80s and early 90s, before the one we all know today was put on...

  • The video dosen't serve the whistle justice.......you have to hear it in person. Trust me its MUCH better than the whistle on #90.

  • Shes a beauty.

  • thats a 1890's through 1900 whistle.

  • Hey Joe was that first shot on the Leigh Line?

  • Spectacular! The 425 is a gorgeous locomotive. Thanks for the great video!

  • Beautiful Engine!! Can't say that I like the whistle though.

  • How comes you dont like the whistle?

  • It's a little high pitched for my tastes. The engine is BEAUTIFUL though.

  • It's a Reading 6-chime whistle. The whistle the 425 USED to wear was a Boston & Maine 6-chime. I like it too... But I also love that RDG 6-chime.

  • There were a few Reading six-chimes that made it out of the shops sounding half decent e.g the one currently found on GWR 90 at Strasburg. However, the vast majority of them sound awful and high pitched such as the one is this video.

  • Well i think this one, The Fredricsons, Steve G's sounds very good. The one at SRR sounds like it need to be tuned, and also like it is traping water is its chimes.

  • There really is no way to "tune" a whistle. Only thing that can be done is raising the cut up or distance between the languid plate and mouths of the chimes. This in turn just prevents the whistle from sounding too airy or squealing. As far as water getting trapped in the chimes is concerned, it has nothing to due with the whistle's design or "tune". It all has to due with whether or not the engine is foaming, carrying over, or having high water. Its a rare occasion if 90 ever does that.

  • A+++++On the video!!!!!!!!!!!!!1 great job

  • Very nice story about a big steam engine.

Plz watch the story about small local steamtrains(tram) have fun.

  • %This is indeed an awesome video. Shes as beautiful as ever. Great video. 5 stars.

  • The new bell/headlight arrangement makes her look like a vest-pocket T-1. Just my two lousy pennies but she would look even better without the visor on the headlight. At any rate I'm ecstatic that steam has returned to the R&N.

  • magnifique.

  • GREAT

  • Beautiful Engine...Nice video....But The Ad on the Water tender???? Ain't much into to Web Site Address on steamers. A pretty loco though.

  • 425 will put on one of the best shows any operating steamer around has to offer. so much more action pact then the modern dizmals. i'm sure that almost everyone (or people who know their ass from a hole in the ground) would agree that theres nothing quite like steam!!!

  • fantastic vid, you had some locations i didn't see on other vids.

  • I like watching the foamers scatter after the train passes at Broad St. in Port Clinton. "Quick we gotta beat 'em!"

  • That stack talk there at Tamaqua tunnel makes her sounds bigger than she already is. Beat that 734.....

  • I have to know this, will they use the dome car on the public trips in June, July, etc.? What about the pullman or observation? It would be nice to ride through the gorge on the dome car. I saw they renamed the dome car Lehigh Gorge and the pullman Hickory Run. What's the difference between the two observations?

  • this is without a doubt the best video of 425 on youtube yet! it was great seeing her again and i'm so happy she's running!!! keep up the great work joe!

  • Excellent video Joe! I admire your work. I expecially like your choice of places to catch this run of the 425, the bridge being my favorite shot. Nice capture of the 6 chime, the sound qaulity is superb. Hope to see you in June!

  • This is a great video Joe! That HD footage makes this video a WHOLE lot better than the others out there. Keep up the great work!

  • Nice video! Love the shot departing Port Clinton, and at Tamaqua Tunnel.

  • Great stuff. All you guys got out this time i see.

  • Nice but 1 question. Y is the whole train blue except the very front where the light is?

  • That's the smokebox. It's the second hottest part on a steam engine, and they use graphite, not paint, on the smokebox.

  • awesome work joe

  • sweet video. as always joe, your videos rock!!! 5 stars and favorited!!!
