Does anyone remember the excellent scene with a parlourmaid when she asks Holmes for a kiss?

He is working incognito of the house of a blackmailer (excellently played by Robert Hardy). The scene was in the garden and was amazing. Just perfect.

The maid's name was Agatha and she was perfectly played by the very likable Sophie Thompson (sister of well-known British actress Emma Thompson).

David Burke had a chance to work with the Royal Shakespeare Company with his wife and to be with his son who was very young. Jeremy Brett wasn't well and had muttered something about "not doing any more Sherlocks". Burke's wife, an actress, had suggested that Edward Hardwicke take over the role. I thought that when I saw Hardwicke's portrayal in "The Empty House" that Watson had taken Holmes' death very badly, so badly that it had aged him.

Edward Hardwicke does look like an older version of David Burke's Watson. But they're only two years apart in age. I cannot believe that David Burke was 50 when he played Watson! Also, I love Burke's Watson hair! Thanks for the info!

I love this video! It's beautiful! Jeremy Brett portrayed the greatest Sherlock Holmes the world will ever know. Although it is doubtful, we'll see if Robert Downey Jr. can rise up to his stature (pun intended). I'm a fan of RDJ, but Jeremy Brett was THE Master of Sherlock Holmes.

I must also say that David Burke is my all time favorite Watson. Does anyone know why he was replaced by Edward Hardwicke?

I believe he wanted to be with his family a bit more. The role was to demanding as far as time away from his family. That is what I heard.
