On a side note though: why does it always take them so long to port the game to windows? I'm not expert, but if all the game used was, for example, C++ and SDL/OpenGL, the differences between the two builds should be absolutely minimal right? Always makes me wonder what exactly Jeff uses to code his games...
Well, I'm happy they're doing this. I can understand why this has resulted in mixed reactions from fans, but I have never played the Avernum series. I've been meaning to pick 'em up for a while now, but I just never got around to it. Loved the Geneforge games though! Looking at the trailer, the game now seems to have hit that sweet spot between very-good-looking and just-functional-enough-so-I-can-still-use-my-own-imagination, which is a difficult thing to pull off. Looking forward to playing it
No. This is the 2nd rewrite of the Exile series that was released in the early 90s. This is Exile1/Avernum1 (commonly known as "Escape from the pit"). Same storyline and world, but updated engine and mechanics.
Hmm...I'm not sure how to feel about this. On one hand, I am craaaazy excited. On the other, I've already played the Exile series, THEN the Avernum series, and to be honest, I'd rather see more Geneforge.
I see this as being quite a pointless remake, the game looks virtually the same, and I've already played the Exile and Avernum series. Not to sound belittling, but wouldn't it be better for Spiderweb Software to team up with a bigger game producer (Ubisoft/Bioware/etc) and transform this amazing game into something that could compete with contemporary games?
It would seem that Vogel has found a niche with old-school style roleplaying games: One that seems financially viable as he is continuing to write games with mechanics like this.
Also, it would seem that a game like this would play quite well on tablet devices and it's been observed that there is a growing focus on entertainment becoming available on tablets. By rewriting Avernum for Mac/PC & Tablet, he will be reaching new audiences & target markets.
@SlithSsschah so i have played avernum 3...just the demo and for many years i did drool over buying it but it has to be shipped all the way from the us which is pretty expensive and not within my pocket money budget. So if i were to play the entire triology should i get them or wait for this new version? and perhaps new versions of later parts?
@Eternalmysteryable (assuming I''m understanding you correctly) Well it will be a while before they release the new games for 2 and 3, and sometimes they have great deals, like you can buy all the games for a low price, but for now I'd wait on buying the games, especially if you buy games through steam, because they put the Geneforge games on steam selling them 20$ for all 5 games and 20$ for each individual game. If it goes on steam like that you can buy all 7 games for a really good price.
@SlithSsschah Ah yes. I just contacted Spiderweb Software about it and they gave me a good deal. But right now, i'm playing other games...Lionheart legacy of the crusaders and Arcanum...thanks for replying and giving me the info :)
@snalin In the earlier version of Avernum you could get past the barriers if you entered and exited combat mode repeatedly (its a glitch) But if I remember right the room is empty.
Well, they remade a remake...
Will they ever endup making an action/rpg version or some MMORPG?

@snalin: As I remember it, I could not get past the barriers, it was as you say a hint at what happens in Avernum 2.
I'm on Avernum 3 at present, when I'm not engulfed in Skyrim. After Avernum 3 I plan to start on Avadon - it looks swell :)

is it possible to get past the barriers in the room at 0:50 (in the old game), or is it just a hint to to the happenings in the next one?
excited for this!

@snalin IIRC, it was, but all you found was an 'alien sword'...
...which was curved in waves all the way down the blade.
