  • I love it!

  • Jesus, that's awesome! ♥ Really love that hair :)

  • I LOVE your hair at the begining..it's sort of Veronica Lake-esque..I've been looking for a tutorial on that and can never find a good one..could you show how you've done this?

  • @MyFavoriteMarissa her's does this naturally. :) Mine, not so much. So I created a tutorial using Veronica Lake's own technique...it's on my channel if you are interested....

  • @MyFavoriteMarissa that is just my hair, doing what it does :)

  • Very useful, thanks

  • wow this is awesome!

  • How lovely! Thank you for this! I have hot sticks but they never seem to work, or I just don't know how to use them! hahah. But anyways, I will deff be trying this out. My hair is above my shoulders though :( Hairdresser cut way more than I wanted! :'( But I still would like to try this out. By the way your beautiful!

  • Hi Gorgeous! - My hair just doesnt want to curl - as said @ Bathing beauties - I need YOU with me for perfect hair at all times :-) Kisses Huggles and Bubbles xx Veronika xx

  • I'm definitely trying this out. Nicely done.

  • This is brilliant, but how on earth do you get the curls to stay? I've done mine many times with hairspray and mousse and the curls don't even last an hour before I look like a spaniel thats been in the pond again.

  • You're so darling! This was definitely helpful. Thank you! I just got hot rollers today and can't wait to test them out after my cold set wears off!

  • fleur is this hair similar to Pearl Harbor Evelyn?

  • so crazy to think women did this all the time back in the day. i would never have the commitment!!

  • I love this hair style!!! Beautiful!!

  • I really enjoyed your video.I always use a curling iron and the older I get the lazyier.lol.I have some sticks like that but they arent the heating ones. And when I got the curls i wet it down some.lol.Now I know to keep brushing thanks.for great tips.

  • What a wonderful video--very useful and lovely! Thank you so much for taking the time to make it. :)

    Kim

  • you are so gorgeous I wish you made more videos :) xo

  • thanks for the tip about brushing, it's good you mentioned that the important thing is the brushing.. i didn't know that :)

  • I absolutely adore your accent!

  • I watched this video aaages ago, and only bought hot sticks Friday, it turned out amazing! If I hadn't have watched this, I'd have definitely been washing it out!

  • More tutorials, please! You always look so lovely and put together.

  • I like you! Very informative and you are funny, too! Thanks!

  • i love your videos and your blog! ive tried to get hold of some hot sticks myself but i havent been successful so far, at the moment ive been resulting to ragging my hair, wich my mum used to do when she was small :) please put on more videos!

    thanks! x

  • I never realized, until I watched both you and LisaFreemonsStreet that I could brush out my natural curls like this, too! I'm going to need to get some of that serum...since the natural curls get a bunch more frizzy than the rolled ones :o) Can I request a new tutorial? the center-parted and side-pinned-back look you wear sometimes? Thanks!!

  • This is really good :P The amount of methods I've tried to get my hair like this. Pincurling, rollers. As you say in the video you think you've done it wrong, I shall invest in some hot sticks and follow your tutorial..thank you :D

  • I have long hair this tutorial works too with long hair or the hairstyle of the 40's only works in medium lenght heair?

  • very helpful!Thank you x

  • wonderful work!

  • Thankyou Fleur, my friend and I are shooting a faux-film-noir and we need to do our actress up like a forties starlet! This will really help :)

  • Omg, I love it! I don't even need to use the hot sticks, just have to style my hair on the top..

  • Fleur,I don't think I've asked before... is this wave on your right side a natural wave or did you set it the night before? It's really quite remarkable if your hair does this on its own...and a bit disconcerting. haha.

  • @LisaFreemontStreet I missed this, sorry lady! Yeah that's completely natural! I've had it permed since, but it looks pretty much the same ;)

  • More vids please Fleur!

  • Thank you, miss Fleur, for sharing with us your expertise-- I do believe you are the very definition of A Classy Lady.

One question, if you're still answering them on this somewhat old video. Do you know how well this would work on longer hair? Mine's about halfway down my back after an ill-advised chop, and is rapidly returning to its prior length of To The Bum And Beyond. Do you think the extra length would weigh the curls out?

  • @BeggarsWouldRide sorry about the late reply - I think it would weigh the curls out somewhat - you'd get it straighter at the top and curled bottoms. But that's authentic - veronica Lake's hair looked like that!

  • Now I really have to go out and buy the hot sticks, your hair looks beautiful!!!!

  • Now I really have to go out and buy the hot sticks, your hair looks beautiful!!!!

  • Ah, all I needed was someone to tell me to 'carry on brushing', thank you Fleur. Laura Lou x

  • Thank you for your video :) I have a set of hotsticks i bought because they were cool looking....never used them because i did not know what to do with them, you gave me a really good idea :)

  • I love listening to you. Please do more tutorials! Perhaps a make up tutorial?

  • Well done... very easy to follow.. can't wait to do it myself..

    Take care

  • Fantastic vid! You are adorable. :)

  • You're great!! Love your webpage and vids. Go on!!!!

  • I am buying hot sticks today and am going to practice for my DIY wedding!! Thank you kindly!! This video is EXACTLY what I was seeking=) Great job on your first video;)

  • Thanks for posting!

    Kisses from Mexico

  • Thanks! This is really good, and you have a super cute accent!

  • Comment removed

  • You remind me of dita von teese!

  • pretty

  • Will 9mm (smallest barrel) curling tongs give same results as hot sticks?

  • Its a shame some ppl (looking at you, MrsTeea!) can't appreciate your intelligent input at the beginning of the video. I thought your introductory comments were good- articulate and informed - I totally get what you mean about hearing yourself or seeing yourself in a video for the first time, and your comment about how it 'shatters your illusions' was funny and spot-on!

  • this was very helpful :) i had been looking at videos of how to curl your hair with hot sticks because regular curlers just wont do it, and i just don't know exactly how to use hot sticks. i like how you actually talk to your audience because it is very refreshing since many people hardly talk when they are recording. thank you :) it helped alot.

  • I saw this months ago and it was close to my first youtube hair/make-up tutorial. It's still fab! Your look is AMAZING! I know there are lots of make-up tutorials for pin-up and 40s looks on youtube, but yours is better and mega authentic. Would you kindly be willing to share the make-up you use and your application of it? Love your blog too! Have a lovely, fabulous summer.

  • You have the perfect color of red lipstick on, could you share the brand/color?

  • Hi, are hot sticks more or less healthy for your hair than hot rollers (just a concern since my hair is color treated)? You look beautiful by the way!

  • you are beautiful! great wee video.. x

  • Thank you for your tutorial. I will definitely try this at home.

  • hiya i have like elbow length hair and bought some hot sticks to try and do my hair like yours but i just ended up with the ends of my hair curly and the rest was flat, any tips ?

  • this is great. never thought i could do this look easily with these. finally found a use for these silly things sitting under my cabinet. now i never have to do pin curls ever again! haha

  • cool top.

  • You were not boring at all. In fact you carried on much less than other women who do tutorials. Your first hair tutorial was very good.

  • I wish you had more videos! you were very easy to understand and learn from. Thanks. :D

  • Lovely hun your Jade is beautiful too..

  • Love video. I have just recently decided to follow my dream of being a vintage girl and really enjoyed this .. your first vid. I am also now a follower on your blog! Thanks and I look forward to watching the rest of your videos!

  • this is exactly what ive been looking to find for ages! thankyou so much! gonna buy some hot sticks now i cant wait!! xx

  • just beautiful......... I'll be trying this on some clients that want some authentic 1940's hair do's....... Eh, loved your 'getting in to character' when you ran off to do the hoovering....... Brilliant!!!

Thank you and look forward to the next ''do's''

  • perfect, i had a go at this and i looked bloomin' tasty. cheers!

  • That looks lovely! It's a pretty weird experience, seeing a '40s-looking lady posting on YouTube :D

  • i loved it. hope you'll do a lot more

  • @MrsTeea Well I apologise for boring you - since I have a blog & this was the first video I ever did then it was an introduction as much as it was a tutorial. My readers all said they liked seeing/hearing from me. ;) I am sure you could have found a similar video that wouldn't be nearly so dull & boring :)

  • @diaryofavintagegirl Oh sweetheart No no no don't go apologizing for boring any one this is a great video and its not supposed to be made for their standards.

  • @diaryofavintagegirl Fleur - you are FAR from boring - We could listen to you talk all day! Love you lady and thank-you so much for showing us all how to get a step nearer to perfect 40's hair! xx

  • @MrsTeea If you're going to specialize in backhanded compliments, perhaps you could check your spelling. :)

  • The tip on the brush out was extremely helpful. Thanks for posting

  • you are really pretty (reply to this message please)

thank you so much this really helped me cause i need to look like a woman from the 40's in our museum at school based on WWII and i wanted to have it turn out perfect and it did thank you!!

  • LOVED IT

  • Beautiful Look!

  • Wow!!!!! I love it!!!!! I always thought that by brushing my hair the curls will go away since my hair is so thin. But what you've done looks awesome!!!!!! I have a special event this weekend, I'm gonna take your advise and give this look a try and I'll let you know how it turns out! Thank you so much!!!! Also, I loved your Faux Bangs Tutorial!!!!!! Greetings to you from Mexico City!!!!

  • Haha I agree, sleeping in rollers is a total faff! Great video though :)

  • loved. i have very short bob so not as much hair as you and i always ended up looking like aunt glenda when curling didn't realise that a bit of brushing would sort it all out. thanks xxx

  • Great viddy! You look classic.

  • Just saw this tutorial, and I love it!

It was really well explained and now it seems my good ole hair curler has to go to make room for HotSticks!

Thank you so much, it was really helpful!

PS What brand and shade lipstick do you wear? It is so classic and beautiful but I can't seem to find it anywhere in shops!

  • I really enjoyed this tutorial! And like you said, when I tried this long ago, I had a problem and rushed to pour water on it. I wish I'd known then about your trick to continue brushing!

  • thankyou, really helpful ^_^ xx

  • Oh my goodness! You have no idea how much this has helped! I'm a sixteen year old girl, in love with the 1940s, and I just haven't figured out how to get the hair right. I tried pin curls, and I thought I did it wrong. (I had the big fizzy clown hair.) As I'm writing this, I'm rag curling my hair. Now I know. (: Thank you so much! p.s. I saw you on flickr a while back, but I had no clue about your blog or anything. Wonderful!

  • I was just wondering if your hair is all one length? If so will that help this hairstyle?

  • wow i love ur hair

  • I am gunna try this!!!! I want a 1940s themed wedding reception and, while I'm not engaged...yet, I do want to try out the hairstyles and clothes before I am and need to plan the reception!

  • I really like your video!

  • awesome video! i would have NEVER guessed to brush my hair out that much to perfect the look, i swore that brushing it like that would ruin it! SWEET tutorial, thanks a bunch!

  • Great hair!! Love it! I didn't know these hot sticks

  • That was great!

  • more please! ;-)

  • Thank you for the great video! I love your lip stick! What colour is that please!

  • Excellent video. Adorable as well.

  • I adore this hairstyle. I was freaking out because I had no idea how to begin - but it's so easy! Do you think you could do a video tutorial for victory rolls? - that would be amazing!

  • Your hair looks absolutely gorgeous!! Ive been wanting to get this look for ages!! Can u doa vid with GHDs or curling tongs where u brish the curl out maybe? Thank u xxxxx

  • I wish my hair looked like that when i let it air dry! I've loved the vintage look for years, and it looks great on you.

  • you look great and i love the hair!

  • Wow thank you for that, I had used those rollers before but did realise I could create a vintage look from them.. Yay!

    Out they come again :)

  • You're funny!

  • Wonderful tutorial, I can't wait to try it. I just realized why you look so familiar-- from the fantastic A Stitch in Time vintage knitting book!

  • @luckychere

So she is the model in that book! I suspected it, but couldn't be sure. It's my favorite knitting book.

  • Cute! my hair type is similar to yours so.. that helped a lot.

  • you're awesome. thank you! and i love your accent. could you please do a makeup tutorial?

  • Amazing! Your video is lovely, thank you! It's very useful for 40's reenactresses... Thanks! I'll visit your blog soon!

    Hugs from Italy

  • Absolutely love the 'do - really helpful tutorial. I once asked a lady in the 100 club how she had done her victory rolls & she told me I could pay her for a lesson... so not everyone's as generous with '40's hair tips as you! Tinkerty-tonk & thanks for sharing xxxx

  • Love this tutorial. Your techniques are so helpful! So happy I found your site (thanks for the link, Lisa!). Looking forward to more!

  • You are absolutely adorable! Thank you so much for the video, it was very useful. I need to get some hot stcks right this moment!!! I can't wait to see more videos!!

  • This was ever so enjoyable, please post more!

  • What a classy dame!

  • This is Fleur's mum and I can assure you that she really is every bit as gorgeous and glamorous as she appears in this video - in fact even more so!

Good luck to you vintage folk!

  • Lovely! When my hair grows some, i'll give them a whirl. Love your flickr pics.

  • You did well on your first tutorial, I look forward to more.

  • it's very awkward being on camera if you aren't used to it, I'm aware of all the weird lip shapes I make, ugh, it bugs me, lol

You're very pretty and you have a very nice voice! I love how pale you are, I need to start wearing more sunscreen/carry a parasol so I can pale out (and even out). I hate my farmer's tan, ugh.

  • lovely! how pretty are you?? I came over here from LisaFreemontStreet's videos and you are just as good as she said.

I wonder if this would work well on shorter hair?

  • i love this stuff! when i was in high school i asked my grandmother and my aunts to show me how to do my hair like when they were young and they never wanted to. i think they thought i was being silly. now i'm 28 and i'm finding these tutorials on youtube. it's great! thanx so much. really authentic. i hope you do more videos. p.s i heard about you from lisafreemontstreet. she's awesome.

  • My grandmother and older relatives were the same way. "I don't remember. Why would we remember those things?" "Why would you want to know how to do that? Nobody does that anymore!"

  • wow!! i've seen your work! you're great! it's so cool that you have a youtube channel.. i would have never known if it weren't for LisaFreemontStreet! thanks lisa!

  • oops, i mean ashley! lol

  • Absolutely wonderful :) I'm going to get me some hotsticks ;)

  • fascinating Fleur.

    great style loved your video

    kindly regards

    Alex

  • Ah, so the key is just to keep brushing! Thanks! I look forward to more of your videos :)

  • Hi Fleur!!

    This is great!!.

I am agree with the brushing thing, it is true, is the key of a good finish.

I cant wait to see the hair rats one!!

BTW, you actually have a very young a nice voice :)

  • Oh this was great, Fleur!! I have yet to try hot sticks, and this really gets me curious about them... especially since I always have to set my hair all night with pin curls, I often get lazy and just go without! :( Lovely video, keep up the great work!

  • Forgive the massive influx of comments. I heartily AGREE with all your comments, especially the part about the key to 1940's styling being in the brushing. People get far too disillusioned w/ pincurls/ sponge rollers etc because they don't brush their hair enough or use their hands to their best advantage. I just LOVE the effect you've gotten here.

  • You are lovely! I just need a camera and I can do some more. I'm never going to come close to your fantastic videos, both the variety of hairdos and skill in doing them! Gonna have to expand my hairdo repertoire! ;)

  • lol...it's all in the editing. Anybody can do the hairdo's I do...the editing makes me look adept!

  • Fleur, I notice that you're actually TOUCHING the Hotsticks as you put them into your hair. Are they not hot to the touch or are you just used to it?

  • Well I AM used to it, but I try not to touch the hot stick itself, I always keep hair inbetween my finger and the stick. I do have quite tough fingers though - if I touch the stick for a very short time it doesn't burn me!

  • WOOPS...that should read 'in the market for hotsticks!'

  • Hehe! I thought so! Well what a compliment from your good self! Thank you so much... only the one video from me so far - need to buy a camera for myself so badly!!

  • Please do, darling! I am favoriting this and want to se more more more! AND I want me some hot stix. :)

  • HOW is it possible that I haven't seen your videos? Why did I have to visit the Fedora Lounge to see your vids? haha. Great job, girl..and I am now officially IN THE MARKET

  • Wow! You SO look like a 40s girl! I can't believe how simple that was. I don't think this would work with my hair bc it's a lot shorter. Thanks for your video...from California!

  • Thanks! You look great!
