I think the thing that is so special about the original ending is that it is a mix of comedy and tragedy, in a literary sense. A comedy being where everything is resolved at the conclusion, and a tragedy being unresolved. Brilliant writing,

The original ending makes more sense:

XXXX (the nameless main character) was told about the 'layer cake' of life. Born, take shit, move up, take less shit, etc. There will ALWAYS be a successor - to repeat the cycle.

XXXX finally made it to the top of the 'layer cake' because he planned it from the beginning. He only made one mistake: he stole someone's girlfriend. That comes back to bite him, and the cycle repeats.

Great film.

I love this ending!. I think that you did a great job mixing the takes of both of the alternative endings and the song was perfectly chosen. Obviously, I think that this ending is far better than the Negative Ending.

being that vaughn is a guy ritchie cronie you have to expect some kind of a twist ending. layer is a dramatic snatch or lock stock but it is put together the same way....this ending here is not a vaughn/ritchie ending

I preferred the original, as it made more sense. I wasn't really shocked, like most people seem to be. I mean really, a guy in his position just getting out that easily? I found the irony to be great, I mean, really, he manages to fool all these big time criminals, and seems so intelligent, yet he fails to take into consideration his final adversary: The boyfriend of the girl he hooked up with.

I also think, that the original ending is a way more better than this one. I was really shocked in the moment XXXX got shot by this little punk Sidney. The original ending fits better to the character that the movie provides.

I agree with Rik. I like the original ending far better. It was more shocking for the audience, to experience the main character go through this intricate web and then be taken down by something as simple as a jealous boyfriend. That's life. And that's a proper ending.

I disagree. It's far too cliched in my opinion. The proper ending comes as a bit of a shock and I feel makes it stronger because of it. Besides, they only shot this to please Columbia Pictures as they didn't like the idea of the main character being killed off. Still, nice to see it and everyone is entitled to their own opinion
