Good job chipstern...yo are right on! Max turned the drum set into an instrument that does not need to only keep beat...he creates his own melodies...hell, his own symphonies! ediot6969 is on the money also...the dude under him is f*ckin stupid!
I never enjoyed Roach as a soloist. His playing here is sloppy, frenetic and musically disjointed. If you listen to most of his solos (apart from playing with Clifford Brown) his tempos and groove is patently the same. Listen to a true Master...Jo Jones.
Boy oh boy, talk about casting pearls before swine.
Max Roach is the king of drummers, and this is NOT A SOLO: it is a COMPOSITION, with themes and motifs, textural and melodic shifts, dynamic variations.
Too long, at four plus minutes? What is this, the attention defecit disorder club? Not CLEAN enough? How about the intellectual dimension, treating the drum set not as an excuse for a virtuosos floor routines but as a MUSICAL INSTRUMENT.
@ZackPomerleau This drum solo in its sort is waaaaay to long, I think drumsolo's are overrated, Roach was basically a good drummer, but never mind, you're missing my point.
@Ihy744ppp You don't understand that this was composed, like the other pieces. It is highly melodic. Maybe you don't like drum solos, but this was a huge step for drumming. I personally think trumpet solos are overrated, anyways :P
ahhh, the rich & varied sound of drums: Max Roach, Papa Jo Jones, Gene Krupa, Chick Webb, Buddy Rich, Louie Bellson, John Bonham, Billy Cobham, Jo Jo Mayer, Bernard Purdie, Jim Chapin, Tony Wms, Steve Smith, Joe Porcaro, Eric Moore, Aaron Spears, and countless others

Because he's repeating a lot of stuff, but i',m not too keen on drum solo's anyway...
It;s really not that bad, but in it's sort it is too long..
Ihy744ppp 1 year ago
he was a good drummer, but if you listen skeptical this is actually quite crappy!

@Ihy744ppp why?

@buguray1
also, it's quite messy sometimes..
Ihy744ppp 1 year ago
@Ihy744ppp If you think of this as music, as art, without fixating on the "messy" you may start to enjoy it.

@tylertad You're right, but I still think it's overlong, he did better stuff.

@ZackPomerleau I do understand, that's the problem, maybe if the solo's where shorter, more basic plus with a band, I don't know..

@linlin4607 yes, he was also innovative and influential (60s & 70s).
likewise Keith Moon, Billy Cobham, Buddy Miles, the original drummer for Chicago (Danny Seraphine).
