Hello, I'm interested in learning the violin. I'm curently an experienced guitar player and I can read music. This may be a dumb question, but I'm wondering what is expected of me regarding skill. What I am wondering is for example is the very beginning of this piece, how difficult is it to play. I am in love with the music but I do not want to discourage myself because I can't play nearly what I want to.
The first 4 arpeggio chords are easy... though I've played a long time, I'm only a very basic player. The white violin is an 'octave' violin, one octave below a regular violin. If you read for guitar, I'd say go for it. - In the US, you can get a 'don't fret'; a self adhesive fretboard to stick to the fingerboard... very handy to keep you in tune while practicing.. also, the tone of a violin while learning can be disheartening... try experimenting with muting the bridge to find a sweet tone.
Hello Julesrules05! I'm glad you found us too! Thanks ... I made this tune up as I went along.. the rudimentary loop background is made up of chords of Am F E and E7, played as arpeggios, repeating. Then a little melody with the Octave violin on top of that. Those 8 recorded bars then repeat continuously with the loopstation, while I improvise over the top with the regular violin. Sorry, I don't have the music written down... I'm guessing you're a player yourself.should be fairly easy to pick up
- a must have for instrumentalists - when no-one is there to play with you - a simple(ish) inline multitrack recorder you work with yer foot... only thing is, you end up more mathematician than musician.
Anyway, TaTaaa!!! ( fanfare) - an original piece! (if you can call 4 chords original)
I like this, but once again, an aquired taste... it ain't rock n roll.
You play so fluid...i really enjoy watch this video...really beatifull song...and..you made an entire violin section all by your self!!! how long have you played violin?
i´ve just bought a violin 3 weeks ago..and.. it´s a very dificult instrument..
This is the first time I hear such good sound from an electric violin! It manages to conduct the feeling so well! I am going on to search some videos of you playing a classical violin, to see how it compares :)
I love this video. It's inspiring. I just discovered that my "Aquila" is actually an "Octave" after struggling to tune strings maximally pulled taut. I bought it from eBay thinking it was an Aquila-- even the owner said it was an Aquila. I have to say... I LOVE the Octave and the resonance and mood of playing 1 octave down. Considering how much more expensive the Octave is, I got a pretty good deal. Although mine has a set of GDAE strings, I tune it down to viola sometimes.
Bridge violins use specially developed strings, £80 a set!. They're much thicker than regular violin strings.... researching 'octave violin' on google should show plenty of results. There are several different octave string suppliers. manufacturers.
I've used it gigging with a folk trio about once a week for the last year, and it's the best amplified violin arrangement I've ever used, in 30 odd years of playing ... I don't think the jack output is designed for headphones.. needs to go to an amp input, but you can use the headphone output of the amp.
Thanks for the answer. I hope you don't mind that it raises another question. You referred to it as an amplified violin so now I wonder, how much sound does it produce without an amplifier?
hey mate this was amazing! can I just ask, what pedal did you use for the harmonising bit? I'm kinda freaked out at the moment with getting something that doesn't work too well with violin (like an octaver I just got last week... bleh!)
Hey garyng1993, great to hear from you.. That's fantastic playing on your channel!
I bought an octaver a few years back that was hopeless.
This harmoniser's a budget Behringer 'US600'. I got it after seeing a fine YT violinist using one. It does 3rds, 4ths, etc in any of 10 assignable keys. It also does octaves, 1 or 2, above or below, way better than the octaver I had, all for around £33GB... a little flaky for guitar, but great for violin arco.
You are truly blessed with musical inclinement. I am moved by your music! I will also add that you seem like a very kind individual by the looks of your text responses. You possess wonderful qualities.
Jesse, how nice of you to take the time to come and check me.
I started violin age 11 or 12, but never got that good... only when I left school and heard contemporary Dylan etc, I got into playing live. I do hope your guitar playing will take you where you want to be. The violin is a beautiful expressive instrument too... good to be a rounded musician.
it is a very nice song. u stayed on tune also. i have never heard anyone evr play this good in my life. not even my grandpa. it was beautiful and breath taking.i think you did very good.
Hey Del, man - great to hear from ya! - I'm just back in from a little folk club gig in Croydon, which went great!
Many thanks for lookin, and for my stars!! Wow, I going to have to make some extra space on the mantelpiece! Have a lovely Christmas and New Year festive holiday buddhist laid back vacation type thing, dude:-)
Amazing Barry , i love it , it sounds very very well and your version is very well played , congratulations for other great job , and marry christmas esteagus
Hello Sally, thanks so much for lookin in! I acquired this white 'Octave' violin a while back - not exactly the thing for day to day rock n roll, but a gorgeous sound for an oik fiddlist of my ilk. Gotta sort an amp and some speakers eh?
I have some untested speakers I found a while ago over here...
I gave up again on having hair that's long and wild and free, man... ! - thanks.
When I bought my new electric, the guy also had this 'Octave', and I just couldn't resist it... it defies the laws of physics, but it's 3 lower strings speak the same as the 'cello's 3 higher strings, with just 12 3/4" to resonate between nut and bridge... bizarre but it works. - a cello under the chin! Strings, however are nearly £90 a set! Sure, I just played the octave for 2 days solid.. love that rich resonance!
Bravo, Barry! I love your new look! A white shirt would really complete the smoldering dark Gypsy ethos of this wonderful composition! Am I right in thinking that the 'white violin' is tuned comparable to a viola? I remember thinking once how I love the rich warm tones produced by violas. This piece is rich in tone and emotion! Awesome.
Hello Terry, lovely to be chatting again, thanks! I usually spend far longer on videos, hence the scruffy appearance... Next time I'll smarten myself up a bit, promise!! The white octave violin's 3 lower strings are the same as a cello - AD & G, the cello also has a low C, below the G. My octave violin has a high E above the top A. I have a 5 string, which plays in the viola register; a wonderful, sensuous sound to regular fiddlers, the viola low C is a refreshing place to be.
Not that I understand a single word when musicians talk. (You'd never know I had 2 years of piano) But I like when he flings the papers away and I feel like I absorbed a fact!
I hope you'll have time to post more of your compositions. This caught everyone's fancy!
Hiya, dear Terry! We in the YT community are just so lucky to have The Freddy's friendly, clear and involving lessons.. The format reminds me of Bob Dylan, and the Subterranean Homesick Blues video! Sure I'm thinking I'll be here more .... this internet really is a wild and wonderful thing. Having a piano at home would be lovely .. I remember falling asleep as a child to the sound of my mother playing Chopin from the next room. speak soon,
beautiful so lovely motion i have a violin and want electric one!

! - thanks.
Love,
Bx

Hullo Freddy! - long time, my friend ..
Happy Christmas to you both,
B :-)

Very nice, sounds like the whole orchestra is playing.

Many thanks, rghoyos! .. less argument with 4 of me than a real string orchestra!

Very best,
B

I definitely need Freddy's famous charts to
help me follow the technical wizardry! : )

I remember falling asleep as a child to the sound of my mother playing Chopin from the next room. speak soon,
B
