Well-penned words of despair - but outright lies - from "Vitae Summa Brevis" by Brit poet, Ernest Dowson - dead at 33 of alcoholism and despair. True Love ENDURES ... even resurrecting from its own ashes. Thank you, Lanny
Actually the movie is difficult to sit and watch. My father was a physician and my mother a nurse. They both became addicted to narcotics and alcohol. My father ended his life when I was seven. Wherever I hear this song, I filled with a deep sadness.
Andy Williams at his very best! What a classic! A masterpiece written, composed and sung by three different American musical masters. Understated brilliance on all counts.
It's been one year ago today (Nov. 22) that My Resplendent Barbra Rose left me for Heaven. In my heart and mind, I'm still dancing with you, Barbra, and Andy Williams is personally singing this for us. Heaven keep you (and us) forevermore! Many thanks to Andy Williams, Henry Mancini, Johnny Mercer, and Nocaro for this, the greatest love song, ever recorded. Jack Lemmon and Lee Remick are still marvelous! MY MATCHLESS GEM AND RESPLENDENT ROSE BARBRA -- THIS ONE'S FOR US!
@mickeymousebiker1 Your discourse touched me, specialy the word " resplendent " to your Dear Barbra Rose . You wil cry many times about her, as I did in my time . The best thing to do is " cry prayng to the Holy God " in the same time . When you finish , you feel good and free !!! ( An old man from Brazil )
@Arqueiroify I say "Amen!" I pray and hope that The Holy Trinity keeps you always, and that you will be reunited in Heaven with your loved ones. You are not "old" -- The Christ will keep you young in spirit and in mind. I know you are one of Christ's brothers here on earth. A joyous Christmas 2011, and a hopeful New Year 2012, to you and those in Brazil!
@Arqueiroify Andy Williams is one of The Eternal Gentlemen of Christmas. Andy is a song-smith and a gift from Heaven (just like My Lady, Barbra Rose). A Joyous and Christ-graced Christmas 2011 to you and yours. The Peace of Christ be with you and yours.
@Arqueiroify The Christ of Christmas (and Eternity) will keep you and your heart young -- forever! Keep looking up! A Merry and Hopeful Christmas 2011 to you and yours in Brazil!
What Jack Lemmon had to say about the song is so succinct. Sometimes a song defines the movie so well, coupled with brilliant acting it evokes many emotions! I always say I have to be prepped up to watch this movie, there is so much tragic irony in it. Yet it is definitely one of my all-time favorites. I love Ms. Remick and Mr. Lemmon in this...the casting was brilliant as well! : )
To My Resplendent and Heavenly Rose -- My Eternal Love -- My Wife, Babra. You went home to Heaven on November 21/22, 2010. My life will never be the same without you. You loved this song, My Matchless Gem, Barbra. I hope you can hear it still. Wait for me until we are together again forever (very soon, I hope).
Henry Mancini was the greatest song writer of all time......He wrote and produced the most beautiful music I can remember...What I remember most is the memories of my Mom and Dad listening to your music. This is why when I hear this I see my parents and all the good times we had.
Booze First its fun then fun w/ problems then it was nothing but misery another friend of Bill & Dr. Bob this movie was my first meeting 10th grade law n you class 33 years ago
I saw this film when I was a very young boy and the whole stuff impressed me... and the music i remeberde to be apropriate! After all those years I find that I get the correct impression...
The first movie that really illustrates the disease of Alcoholism. Billy Wilder had a very good understanding of what it means to be a drunk. Some of them recover, but some of them don't. And it IS tougher for women. I'm a "12 Stepper" with 30 years of sobriety and highly recommend this story. Easy does it.......
I always loved this song, plus the movie. Alcohol has ruined many relationships(even mine). I have so many regrets! Please don't allow this disease to ruin yours. Appreciate what you have and love him or her all you can. Don't be ignorant like I was. Booze doesn't resolve problems, It is the enemy!
Una obra maestra de su director, y una injusticia el no llevarse tres Oscar su actor jack lemmon, Lee Remick y su director Blake Edwards. Esas cosas tiene de injusticia la Academia de Hollywood.
this is such a beautiful song but so sad, it is so sad to watch someone you love find comfort in a bottle over and over again, knowing you can not help this person that they have to help their self it is still hard for me to watch this movie or listen to this song it really hits close to home. for any one struggling with this disease my prayers are with you,
beautiful song and an extremely emotive and powerful film; tragic and so sad. It truly pulls at heartstrings that were once held up by real, true love but which demons, disguised as a friend in bottle-form cut with cruel, hatred-filled glee. There is nothing wrong with enjoying a drink; there is everything wrong in letting it rule the way you live your life. To all who feel weak just try to know that absolutely nothing remains constant; there is light at the end of every tunnel. WBW
The scene where the character played by Jack Lemmon is looking for the bottle of liquor he hide under one of the flower pots in the greenhouse is classic.
such a profound film concerning a profound addiction..with such a sad ending too. I was 13 when I saw this and knew exactly what the message was..and I saw the affects of alcohol within my own family...... but a well done and truly poignant film and a song Ill never forget......
my all time favorite Jack Lemmon film......Andy Williams version of the song is simply beautiful......thanks so much for sharing these pics from the movie.
I love this song.. This movie made one of the greatest impacts on my life. If you haven't seen it, it's a must. If you are an alcoholic or know an alcoholic, this story tells it all. The only thing I found better than the "days of wine and roses" is GOD.
@JasonWB007 Thank you so much for your compassion. You are very kind...

They are not long, the weeping and the laughter,
Love and desire and hate:
I think they have no portion in us after
We pass the gate.
They are not long, the days of wine and roses:
Out of a misty dream
Our path emerges for a while, then closes
Within a dream.
