@MyLalinea - From Wikipedia - Odissi (Odia: Devnagari:ओडिशी) is one of the eight classical dance forms of India. It originates from the state of Odisha, in eastern India. It is the oldest surviving dance form of India on the basis of archaeological evidences.
@priyouny That's because Balinese dance evolved 4m Indian Dance..........The Natya Shastra was taken by Hindu colonists to Bali long ago and the Balinese dance evolved 4m it.
@priyouny Well we've got the Sitar, the Veena, the Mridangam, the Tabla, the bansuri, the santoor, the sarod, the ghatam and Whoaah!! the list never seems to end.
@sizzlewithabir ya, but for that so many kinds of traditional instruments, what you call it in one or two word?
Gamelan (Javanese gamelan or Balinese gamelan, both a little different) in indonesia means a set of traditional music instrument comprise of gong, kendang, sitar, bonang, kenong, gambang, gender, and many more...if you never see it, please search and watch it in youtube...
i like indian culture coz we've long time relation history especially in religian and culture...
@priyouny We don't have a single word 4 them coz the instruments are different for North Indian Classical music (including East Indian music and Assamese Borgeet music) and Carnatic Classical music. Ac2aly, in Indian music, musical instruments are secondary. The melodies and the beats can be sung out vocally. That's Y u hear the 'ta kit ta dhin na' sort of sound in the video. The melodies are sung out using the Do Re Me (Indian- Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Dha Ni )
@sizzlewithabir ow...i see know...in Java and Bali dances are usually only accompanied by gamelan music only and as a complement (especially in java dance) sometimes there is a singer too (we called it Sinden).
o ya...in bali and java, we have ramayana ballet too...
@priyouny Yes. Ramayana is quite associated with south east Asia. The Ramayana mentions places like Sri Lanka, Yavadwipa (Java), Malaya (Malaysia), Bali, e.t.c. Nice to knw that we've cultural relations.

Anyone interested in more correctly performed Odissi should see Sujata Mohapatra's videos. She may have the most proper form of any Odissi dancer alive. All Indian classical dances are resplendent forms of art and when the best exponents present them , each genre is a sumptuous treat to the eyes. I must confess my partiality, though, for Odissi because of its predominant quality of gracefulness. Here we have two beautiful and lithe dancers exemplifying that virtue in perfection. Thanks for the post, imtiazmohsin.
I keep coming back for more of these two ladies. I've checked out other Shankaravaranam Pallavi dancers and although they are very beautiful, graceful and dare I say it choreographed to the nth degree, and in many cases use the same tune, this clip the musicians and dancers have stolen my heart.
lovvveee the music. it so soothing. can someone tell me, what this part of odissi is called? for eg in bharatnatyam there is padam, jattiswaram etc, in kathak there is tarana, likewise does this have a special name? also, what is this raga?
how marvelous and beautiful they are, I have never watched this particular style of dance, but I will look for more. such precision and feeling coming through their dancing. wonderful!!!!
i feel proud to let many of you know that the girl in white is my beloved wife Gitanjali Idar.....must admit that i had very little knowledge of odissi before our wedding and only after seeing this video I actually discovered how talented a dancer Ginni is...
@suryavirsingh77 You have every reason to cherish your beautiful and extremely talented spouse. Stay blessed and please ignore the rudeness of those who lack grace in their comments.
Perfectly synchronized and tenderly rendered. I really wish people who hide behind a username stop making disparaging comments about other artists. People who say that are not true artisans, but have lost the humility and grace of true performers.

The dancer in white is perfect in every respect - expressions, body postures and movements ... and beautiful to boot. Choreography is very attractive and charming - altogether breathtaking perfomance; it's hard to stop watching it :)
people are "gaga" over this video because of the precision shown in executing the dance... the bharanatyam is probably the oldest practiced dance dating back almost 4000years...

Thanks for your attempt to explain to me why people are so gaga over this pretty mediocre rendition of Shankarabharan Pallavi. This is Odissi, not Bharatnatyam, and neither of them are 4000 yr of dear dominius.
2 people doing some art and its up on youtue to enjoy and apreciate. why do u want to put it down? on what basis is it mediocre. maybe u trained in this but so what, most of us artn trained in it therefore we can get gaga over it if we like cause of the emotion it envokes in us. who cares for ur "professional" opinion
Watch Nandini Ghoshal's rendition of this awesome pallavi, Sakredfire.
AGAIN, it is one thing to feel spiritual bliss on experiencing a work of art. I am no one to say what one should like or not. These young ladies certainly are graceful and charming.Nandini is a senior dancer and these girls are probably beginners. It will be unfair to compare the two performances. I am mentioning this just because you asked for a performance thats not mediocre technically speaking.LET ME REPEAT: "TECHNICALLY"
Can you send me a link? "Technical" skill would of course mean precision, angika, the expression of the concept 'tribhang,' synchronization, and grace.
@domidius Nope dude.................Odissi is the oldest form based on archaeological evidence........Bharatnatyam, though evolved from the Natya Shastra and the Gandharva Veda, rose into prominence only during the age of Sangam Literature. Nevertheless, all of India's Classical dances are wonderful. And if all of them developed independently, Y worry abt dates??
so beautiful, the style, the colour, the coordination, good :D y like so much ... and i have dancing this dance in my class of religion but, i'm dancing Kathak inmy class, this good, i like everything of this dances but, it's so difficult
I forgot my existence when this excellent performance of divinity blended with femininity, abhinaya, aangika, aaharya, .. I need to wake up to come from that heaven to this earth of reality..
Wow!!! Wow!!! Wow!! the heaven on the earth..
May I know who are those two artists? Any more videos from them?
I think they are equally good but you can see that though they are doing the same dance they have different styles the girl in white has a more feminine touch and the girl in orange has more of the professional flawless style, I enjoyed them equally and could watch either one of them at length, fantastic
What I know about some of the Indian classical dances originated from Vaishnavaite philosophy (followers of vishnu) e.g. Orissi, Manipuri, Mohiniattyam and they suffered discrimination against the puritan shaivaite school of arts. The exclusive representation of 'bhakti rasa' and love and passions are visible in these dance forms, and the methods (shastra) might not be as old and rich as shaivaite dance form like Bharatnatyam. Correct me if I am wrong.
@Blowgger Count in Sattriya of Assam too...................Ac2aly the puritan 'Vaishnavites' discriminated the 'Shaivites'...........The Shaivites included sensuality in the dances coz they have a philosophy similar 2 the Yin and Yan.........The Vaishnavites condemned it and replaced female dancers with male ones (in Odissi, Manipuri and Sattriya)
visually odissi has softer and more harmonious movement, bharatanatyam is more energical and mechanical, if you watch some videos of both you will verify this ;-)
A feast for the eyes and ears, beautiful in every way.
I had to stop watching to post a comment, I've watched it five times so far, and haven't blinked once.
I've read other comments from more experienced viewers, but I prefer the dancing of the girl in the orange, she seems more fluid, perhaps it's because she has longer arms, or the colour of her attire catches the eye. Anyway, I'm going back for some more.
just look at the fluidity of fingers, arms, easiness of movements, flexibility, movement of arms, neck, waist, bending and thumping of foot, ehhh cant help pointing out, its like they are gliding in the air.
To give a negative feedback about this performance one does not need to lear Odissi!!!! :) :) Dance is not only mere body movements. I do not know the grammer but these gilrs are quite lifeless and graceless. I would call this a very ordinary performance. The families and friends may enjoy but not those who love dance or feel dance under the skin!!!
uuhhmmmooo.. No. Still think something is missing. They are good dancers as in probably they are doing everything correctly. But, that is not enough to be lively and graceful on stage. You (body+mind+soul) need to be really involved. No doubt the white one is better but still I have seen many like her whom I would consider as a mediocre one!!!!! Sorry :) :) It is also a matter of personal taste and preference.
Used to be Courteseans(Devdasis) performing this dance in temples for devotion and prayers, now prized for it's cultural value Odissi (from State of Orissa) is one of seven classical dances of India.
hi krystal clear...ur comments mayb right but in my opinion..expressing it with words like 'horrible' is definately an exaggeration. anyways we all are looking forward to videos of your dances to replace the 'horrible' ones thay have on yout tube.hope to see them soon!

my gurus have taught me this with such responsibility that which is allowing me to point out this kind of underqualified dancers. It is not their fault...they should get credited for atleast keeping up with the decipline...but its always the guru's fault!

I am not saying I dance better than anyone else... but my gurus are one of the the top odissi dancers and the reason why I am saying this is because the father of odissi, Guru kelucharan mohapatra has said this himself.
I have performed this pallavi several times and have gotten praises for it!
wow... you learn dance at one of the best dance schools in north america!??! well that dsnt mean you know more and can dance better then anyone else. and about knowing all these basics one dsnt just learn from hearing and being taught. you have to go out there and actually perform and learn from you audiences reaction. and their coordination is excellent. their movements and expressions are so clean and clear... and their stamina did not die at all
If you are a odissi dancer, then you will know that all the eye movements are wrong, they are not sitting in chouka properly, their hips are moving, and perhaps more importantly... they face doesnt show the bhaav of this pallavi!
A dancer should have their basics solid before going ANYWHERE CLOSE to this pallavi.
I am a odissi dancer learning from one of top Odissi schools in North America!
i dont know whats wrong with this insane person under me w/ their horrible comments.most deff. you are not a oddisi dancer if you find this distrubing. i've been learning oddisi for many years now and this has got to be the most beautiful video of oddisi i've ever seen on youtube. how much more graceful can you get then this? this was just beautiful and what an honor it is to givin the chance to see such beauty.
Hello my name is Jina and I Loved this video!!!! I want to learn dance like this since i was little, it is so beatifull dance, i always enjoy the hindu culture i think is a very rich and interesting.
I agree - the dancer in white has perfect movements, expressions and rhythm; just fabulous - it is the most beautiful Pallavi I have seen on youtube! Does anybody have more videos of this dancer? It would be such a treat to see more! Thank you!
The lady in white is one of the best odissi dancers I have ever seen! Absolutely perfect posture and movements! Amazing! Yes, this is Shankaravarnam Pallav
the co-ordination is excellent.... simply wonderfull it creates a very romantic mood... can be perfected with the light setting and mor of expression....... one of the best clip i've ever seen in youtube..... well done.....
superb.....mostly the white dress girl.......nice...

just look at the fluidity of fingers, arms, easiness of movements, flexibility, movement of arms, neck, waist, bending and thumping of foot, ehhh cant help pointing out, its like they are gliding in the air.

To give a negative feedback about this performance one does not need to lear Odissi!!!! :) :) Dance is not only mere body movements. I do not know the grammer but these gilrs are quite lifeless and graceless. I would call this a very ordinary performance. The families and friends may enjoy but not those who love dance or feel dance under the skin!!!
seyneskeynes 3 years ago
Notice the one in white ... perhaps you will see it a bit differently.
shal2 3 years ago
uuhhmmmooo..

Magnificent! Odissi is worth of Jagat Jivan Sri Jagannathji!

Used to be Courteseans(Devdasis) performing this dance in temples for devotion and prayers, now prized for it's cultural value Odissi (from State of Orissa) is one of seven classical dances of India.

my gurus have taught me this with such responsibility that which is allowing me to point out this kind of underqualified dancers.

I have performed this pallavi several times and have gotten praises for it!

the dancer in white is one of the best dancers i've seen
qtxbangalgal 3 years ago
wow... you learn dance at one of the best dance schools in north america!??! well that dsnt mean you know more and can dance better then anyone else. and about knowing all these basics one dsnt just learn from hearing and being taught. you have to go out there and actually perform and learn from you audiences reaction. and their coordination is excellent. their movements and expressions are so clean and clear... and their stamina did not die at all
qtxbangalgal 3 years ago 3

This is a horrible version of this pallavi
krystalclear20 3 years ago
This is a very disturbing version of Shakaravaran Pallavi. I am very sorry to say this.
This pallavi is too beautiful to be even presented like this.
krystalclear20 3 years ago
Presented like what, exactly?
shal2 3 years ago
Could you please explain a bit more than just saying it's horrible - what about it stylistically do you not like?

Barathanatyam dance is so beautiful and graceful. The young woman in white has great facial expression and is very good.

the classical dances are both beautiful and graceful! this however is not bharatanatyam, but instead odissi .

Rather than a comment, I have a question: Where and when did this take place ?

I agree - the dancer in white has perfect movements, expressions and rhythm; just fabulous - it is the most beautiful Pallavi I have seen on youtube! Does anybody have more videos of this dancer? It would be such a treat to see more! Thank you!
