  • YES, yes and yes. The proper reading and understanding of the Bible is most critical.

Many of us have missed allot of correct interpertation by reading it as a novel. I am working on preparing a class in Hermeneutics for my church. Thanks for the insight.

  • @acyberguy I am gladdened that you found this video to be helpful! Be blessed as you put together your hermeneutics class for your church - great insights are sure to present themselves.

  • But that is the point exactly; you indicate how hermeneutics includes an evaluation of one's own prejudices -- is that not one of the functions of the Holy Spirit? To move a person to evaluate their condition so that they see who/what they really are? Of course.

I believe you may be getting hung up on the word origins of hermeneutics rather than focusing on how it can be employed to enhance one's interpretation of the Bible. It's simple, really.

  • The idea of a "holy spirit" serving as a guide to translation is a bit foreign to my concept of Hermeneutics, since Hermeneutics was, like I indicated previously, a derivation of Hermes, a Greek winged God that was also a prankster and a trickster, and... deceitful. As Hermeneutics was later employed by philosophers, a sticky means of evaluation of the levels and depths of one's prejudices in translation, to introduce something like "Holy" into the equation would immediately present grief.

  • That would be accurate, as to my understanding of the Hermeneutic process. The labor of translation would be to look at our own potential biases. If we want to "believe" a certain way, then we often find reinforcements for those beliefs. The Hermeneutic process suggests problems that occur within the structures that limit clarity, both as a communicator and a receiver. If you "believe: and seek reinforcement, there is already a prejudice.

  • The use of the word "pagan" is interesting. What if it were also applied to Christianity?

Hermeneutics has been utilized as a philosophical tool in an attempt to get to a truth. I don't know if it is to get to a truth that we particularly "want" or if we can use this tool to

prove one particular point of view, although many other philosophers have attempted this as well. What if they are attempting to prove something that is wrong? Can you use Hermeneutics to do this?

  • @tigerforceclint As you say, hermeneutics is a tool and like any tool it can be misused. It comes down to one's motives. I believe that if someone is allowing the Holy Spirit to guide them this tool can be extremely helpful for the scriptures were not written in English. Hermeneutics, properly applied, can help the student understand the texts better resulting in a more clear understanding of what the text is trying to teach us. They must be willing to accept the truth however it is found.

  • @tigerforceclint You make a lot of sense, one might assume that you are also perhaps within realizing that you are also defning any relationship within any physical experience within any and all word affliliation' so this has everything to do with any sense to literacy' however' what one knows and how one responds outside their own worldview is all inclusive often lacking any venue due to another illogiocal ideology' other than the new venue within the internet which has less contravention'

  • hermeneutics is a bit more complicated that this particular video suggests. I appreciate the beginning, but Hermeneutics is based upon Hermes and his communication of the Greek Gods to the mortals. This person, with this interpretation becomes an attempt to become Hermes. No offense, but this interpretation also reflects this person's psychology and understanding as well.

  • @tigerforceclint I make no attempt at becoming a pagan god, I'm not sure where that idea came from. Regardless of the historical foundations, for hermeneutics and the methods employed have changed so much over time, I'm hopeful that you would agree that the narrow sense in which I advocate the use of hermeneutics is bound to bring accurate results. And that is the point, to ensure that what we are reading is being understood in the manner for which it was intended.

  • @tigerforceclint Hermeneutics has more to do with being able to construal what one knows' what one knows is often being sequestured within any and all subjectiveness within any and all contraints to any and all conectivity' there are physical truths which is what any philosophical interpretation attempts to admonish' but what does that mean within any superficial world of routine and subjectiveness in respondence' askng the question who are we really trying to fool'

  • A wicked man cannot undestand a good man. He cannot understand how he feels or thinks about things. He simply cannot relate. The more we trust Jesus by doing what he says the more we will understand how he thinks and feels about things. Character is the key to understanding; hermeneutics is important, but not as important as character. If Hitler followed the correct hermeneutical procedure would he rightly understand the Bible? No. "Justice" by George MacDonald. Godliness is the opener of eyes.

  • @BBBradH I agree, it is only by the agency of the Holy Spirit that spiritual things can be received and understood. My video presupposes someone is studying scripture already with a sincere heart for God. Without that, as you stated, it will be meaningless to him/her.

  • @EraunaoGraphe The problem is we can think we have a sincere heart when we do not (Jer 17:9). MacDonald was right. "Justice"

  • An interesting, insightful and logical approach. For a new Bible student like myself, it is hard sometimes to understand - especially with the plethora of interpretations and theories.

The sheer amount of different denominations/practices etc is often enough to put off many potential Bible students.

  • thank you.... fight the good fight

  • Ever in the Lord's service, my brother. :-)

  • Very ,very good points.
