on your next turn drive to eisenach and visit the wartburg (martin luther has translate the old testament into the new) and go to the automobil museum (here´s the beginning from bmw). drive from frankfurt the autobahn 4 in right east going dresden. its better and you can see more from the country. greetings from germany
What is it about the autobahn that seems to mysterious and magical to me? It has always been my dream to drive on it! Germany is so beautiful how could the people who live there get used to it? America's landscape sucks and so does it's highways. We also barely have any alternative energy windmills.
Great video so cool, I was in Germany in 2009 on the ICE (fast trains) which was doing 280kms (175mph) which ran adjacent to the Autobahn and there were Porsches and BMW's passing the High Speed Train which must have been doing 300kms easy!
You should Ireland where we have just built new Motorways all over the country and no one knows how to drive properly it is hillarious!! The M7 & M8 are notorious even tractors drive illegally on it!
you probably got all my respect for doing what you did, i am too much of a chicken to do that the biggest journey I have ever done by car is from toronto (where I live) to buffalo and back, and that was with the aid of the gps in my bmw.
Btw: Those ugly appartment blocks at 1.45 are in the city of Jena. Most cities in former soviet Germany have beautiful city centers but huge and ugly appartment suburbs.
First off, I felt like a zombie was supposed to come out at any moment... (US Horror movies for ya) Besides that, This was pretty cool man. I really enjoyed watching that, its great to get an insight like that since many people can't see what it's really like.
Keeping middle - when on a three-lane length is NOT appropriate IF the right lane is devoid of traffic.
The road traffic sign used to signal the end of imposed speed limits is the "speed derestriction" sign (//) - this signs interpretation is held in the UN Convention on Road Traffic, Signs and Signals. The car will be supplied with a hazard-warning triangle and high-visibility safety vest; each *must* be used at breakdowns and crash scenes now.
Some do. We found that in most cities a lot of people at hotels and so on did. Out in the country there were far less, and you had to know some German to get around. But everyone was friendly as long as you tried, and did not act like a pompous demanding tourist. :)
Enjoyable viewing ~ relaxing and flowing drive taking in the road sights and scenery of Germany.
Surely those "windmills" are wind turbines.
AFAIK they produce 5.5% of Germany's entire electricity consumption.. with all renewable energy providing 11.9% of entire German domestic consumption. Way to go Germany tbh!
Nice driving footage. American drivers must be messy drivers when I see you jumping up for the 'bahn. Most Germans have a different of the autobahn. Just recently, a survey indicated that most drivers want the autobahn restricted for more fluent traffic and the environment. My mother hates German driving but loves Dutch driving.
Safety and environmental concerns, if one speeds a lot then one increases the emission of greenhouse gases. Generally I think that we do care a lot about the environment in Europe. But the main reason for the speed limit for trucks is safety.
MAN (German truck manufacturer) estimated, that driving their TGA truck (google it) loaded to 40t at 89kph instead of 80kph makes it burn over 2L of diesel fuel more.
BTW - 40 tonnes is a lot. Trucks has no rails, they may easily be involved in accident witt any other vehicle on road. And if accident occurs they are very dangerous. It's just safer to have them drive slower...
Ah, Germany. I myself live in Belgium, but blessed with the fact that I live 30 min from Aachen and that I do visit Germany often for their lovely funfairs (kirmes).
It's true you should stay on the extreme right lane whenever possible. It's a rule in most European countries, just like using the mobile phone. There's no rule about eating, but everyone has to be able to control their car. If eating causes a hazard, then it's prohibited.
LOL its really funny to see an American's reaction to stuff we in Europe take for granted: flushing toilets with a button in the wall, driving like that on highways, and having almost no advertisement along highways. Ive never been to the USA but boy it must be some chaotic country, according to the amazement of the maker of the video!!
It's too bad that film can't capture the true speed. I was in Germany 2 times. We took an Opel on the Autobahn and holy shit was it a wild ride. The Germans know how to drive. That is why it's so costly to drive there. Also they are the safest drivers around, from what I have heard and seen.
I wish our highways here in the US were built like that and drivers that disciplined. Roads in Europe sure are smoother and don't fall apart like roads in the US
Driving my audi a3 here in Brazil, you can bet, it's not so easy, in the future I'll try to send a video with the kind of roads that usually we face here. Nice video. Sorry about my poor english.
I know that you enjoyed your ride there, but you did not always keep to the right! (ref min 7 of you video). when there are 3 lanes (or 4 or more) always keep to extreme right unless you are passing. once you pass, you go back to the extreme right lane.
that discipline is what keeps driving in germany so much more enjoyable than here in the US... next time you go over there, you'll know how to drive properly! ;-)
Oh, I know, I know, but I felt that switching lanes too fast was not safe as there were trucks to my right. So I kept in the center lane most of the time. I made a VERY good point not to hang out in the left and I always watched behind me.. but thank you. :) I hope to enjoy the drive there again someday!
In Poland (east from Germany) we have it written in law - Drive always on right...
Unfortunatley, Poland is still known for having very poor roads - Usually right lane has tracks made by heavy trucks, also because of this you can find some patched (or even unpatched) holes, so it is usually safer to drive on left lane. Ah - and speed limits: 100kph for 2-lane road, 110kph for expressroad and 130kph for freeway. But still - you can often find somebody driving 160kph on simple 2 lane road :(
I went to Poland a few years ago. The roads are shocking. The only decent roads are the very few motorways which are being built. The build quality of these new roads, paid for by EU money, is superb! Road fixing teams are very common however the poles, when repairing potholes simply fill them with shingle but no bitumen!
Road conditions in Poland are changing - Since we joined EU more and more money is spend on roads - not onyy new like A2/A4 motorways, but a lot of minor roads are fixed
Fixing potholes with shingle - you mean rocks? I've never seen stuff like this :), but maybe it was made because pothole was new and fixing crew was busy, so someone temporary filled with what he had :)
lol @mibars, I often drive on a Autobahn towards the German/Polish border. I hate those polish car drivers who don't use the right lane, but block the left one. At least now I know why :)
Yes it is very irritating to see somebody stuck to left lane... And it is illegal (outside cities) to pass on right lane...
But what is even more irritating are truck drivers - Those who have speed limiters are limited to 85km/h - but in one truck it might be 84,5 in other one 85,5 - Everything is okay until faster truck start to overtake truck driving 1km/h slower - and it takes sth like 5 minutes... Because of course guy in slowe truck cannot waste those 5 seconds on slowing down...
@danjreed yeah there pro and contras about right/left/middle lange driving. anway, you dont caused any accidents, so your driving was good, imo. But you should understand german and listen to the radio since they brodacast infos about the highway like traffice jam, things on the surface of the autobahn, ghostdriver, etc.
True, but when the Autobahn is almost empty most Germans don't follow the rule religiously and keep longer on the middle lane when they can spot a slow truck 1 minute ahead.
You think you where going pretty fast, but how many times did a big Merc or something similar fly past you. I did 120mph pretty much all the way from Stuttgart to the Czech border, and a couple of "bigger boys" flew past.
What I remember from USA, is that toilets are "whirlpool" type and has ENORMOUS water tanks :) In our home we have 6 litre toilet cistern with 2nd button for using only half tank ;) Ah - buttons are built into cistern.
Toilets in North America either have tanks w/ handles or very noisy flushometers. Toilets in Europe have, a tank w/ a button or handle, a high tank w/ a chain, a handle on the wall, a button on the wall, or an obnoxiously big square button that looks like a giant light switch.

Nice video. But if you come next time to Germany, please watch out for two things:
1st: You have to use the right lane, if it's free.
2nd: It is now (since October 2010) forbidden to drive without snow tires in winter.
