I agree with you that her war with the trade unions was exactly that, a war...the more there was opposition the more it seemed she believed that she was right. On the other hand, the wildcat strikes that the unions were calling in the late 70s, for extortionate wage increases, were crippling Britain economically and causing much disruption. However, closing down industry that effectively isolated entire communities, without assisting them afterwards, was completely disgraceful.

The Falklands war was far from pointless, nor was it a war Thatcher started. The Unions needed to be brought done, given they were crippling the economy themselves, the decline of industries also involved large issues that are to large for any single government to control.

In a warp Thatcher isn't nearly as bad as some claim, she wasn't perfect but we've had worse PM's.

Britain controls those islands because the people living on those Island wish to be British, as for shooting an Argentinean ship that was no threat all ships sunk were military so very much a threat.

My argument is that Industry wise, there wasn't a whole lot Thatcher could do, short of what she already did. Britain was being overtaken by emerging economies (ie: Japan) in terms of manufacturing, but even today remains the worlds 6th top manufacturing nation.

We don't go around shooting Russian ships because we might go to war with them in the future (although if we do it will probably be nuclear anyway). The ship was heading away from our territory I think and wasn't a threat. She didn't have to destroy the trade unions and that strike left a lot of people without jobs. Rather than crippling them she could have helped them and then maybe not as many people would have been that poor.

The ship was heading towards the British fleet not away. You must also remember it was war. Further you should take into account that the trade Unions brought down two governments before Thatcher was elected, they had far too much power and to little will to negotiate. The industries they were apart of were making losses in the hundreds of millions of pounds, all having to be made up by the tax payer, at a time British share of industrial output was falling.

Every leader has flaws, it's a fact of life. I'm not trying to claim sainthood for Thatcher, what I am trying to say, is that the most popular claims against her are false. It's not a matter of just negotiating with the unions, by the time Thatcher was in power that had been thrown off the table by the unions themselves, having brought down two previous government who attempted to negotiate with them. It wasn’t about just having money, it was about expecting more money.
