  • WAAAAAAYY cool! A very powerful piece of work. Well done!

  • @Jarmihi Do you hold prejudice over what are empathizable human tragedies?

Any minority, male/indian/etc, under sexual oppression deserves these same lines of aid. Their plights are not worlds apart, discrimination is unwarranted.

If college papers are what you think of 'tangable experiences', I ask you visit people living in strife and learn compassion. Our lives are built on their sufferance. Powerful video? I help the homeless with aid face to face. Get on your feet and make a difference.

  • which countries are doing this to girls?

  • sharing as much as possible, this is great work thank you ..One half of the sky material ..

  • A VERY POWERFUL message!

  • I'm sharing this video with everyone on my friends list!!!

  • Thank you so much for this video. Thank you.

  • I noticed that female genital mutilation is mentioned in this video. I realise that the larger issue of women's rights being violated because of religious and cultural traditions (and the socio-economic reasons mentioned) but surely on this specific point it is much more prevalent in men? Circumcision of babies is the same issue, with person involved having no say in how their genitals are treated. This also happens in most first world countries. Just bring attention to it. Good luck with this.

  • @Fisham95 While true medically, I suppose, the purpose and realized goal of female genital mutilation is to rob her of any sexual enjoyment for the rest of her life. The goal of male circumcision is not related to his sexual pleasure - and in fact does not affect his quality of life in this manner. The two procedures do not belong in the same sentence or mind. The assault on females is aimed at subjugating women as property. This is why it is called mutilation. It is a mutilation of the soul.

  • @ItOnlyTakesaGirl Your video is disgustingly inadequate and narrowly focused.

Do you know who gets raped/mutilated/hiv too? Men/boys. Effeminate/cross-dressing/gay/etc. Sexual oppression is not sex specific. Desperation and predation can happen to any youth.

Are your eyes open? Eastasian sex changes & male whoring?

How many destitute boys will it take? Are males deadends for care because they can't churn out babies? Sexually scarred male upbringings produce the very Men who target these girls

  • @Clovyns Yes, yes, but the rate of that is significantly smaller. While it is a problem, no doubt, this video doesn't cover that. Does every video have to cover every little problem the world has? Make your own powerful video about that. Oh, by the way, that would also have a narrow focus. It's just like writing a college paper: don't be too broad, don't be too narrow. I'm not going to add women's rights to my JAVA documentation.

  • 25,000 girls are infected with HIV every day?

  • @clevelandsteamaz i hope not. that mean everyone would have hiv in a few years

  • What's the point of this?

  • @SuperCorey95 The point is to make twats like you see it and think about it.

  • @Juanath17 Fuckn calm down. Did I saw this is a good thing that it's happening? There's a million videos asking me to donate to their charity, and I would give my life for everything to be good again.

  • Citations please.

  • the education of everyone is important not just women, but before women can get educated in other countries they need a good suply of food and water otherwise this is pointless, how can you learn with an empty stomac.plus changing the traditions in other countries whould be like changing traditions in the U-S , just remouving religion or the fundamentlist whould advance womens right by about 20 years. and women are looking at the problem the femenist way and not the male perspective.

  • @Casin01 if they realy want to solve the proble they have to see it from the male side as well in those countries

  • 66% of the worlds labour is perfomed by women who can't get a job.

  • When I was fifteen I was worrying about getting good grades and getting into a good university. I'm still not married and keep my dick in my pants. What's up? ^_^

  • with our problems, i can't take this seriously(sorry is that sounds like i don't care)

  • Female genital mutilation is wrong? What about circumcision?

  • @NecroAsFuck I certainly don't agree with circumcision, but it typically does not have the long lasting negative effects that FGM does. When this procedure is done it frequently occurs without anesthesia or any sort of sterile equipment. Razor blades and broken glass are common tools used on multiple girls, which increases the likelihood of spreading illnesses like HIV/AIDS. The other health complications are too numerous to count.

  • The same can be said about young boys.... People need to stop generalizing that only girls and women get raped. Rape is not good for either sexes.

  • i found this very stupid.

  • @ComeBackGB And now [at least] 317,332 people think YOU'RE stupid. Good job, kid.

  • Money is the root issue.

  • So, what is this, a plea for men to do something?

  • why are people worrying about this. I haven't had a job for two years, I am losing my house and I live in the united states. Hullo people.

  • I couldn't stop laughing throughout this entire video

  • Well that is all and good, but who exactly is going into these countries and tell them otherwise? Your liable to get your head blown off.

  • Very cool video, props!

  • Yes, a totally awesome video...but hey! It's not only in developing countries. There's a renewed war on women and girls in the US right now.

  • @Timcapehart

Bullshit women have never had it better in the US.

  • @gothicpanda89 Look here for some ideas of what you can do to help:

    itonlytakesagirl.blogspot.com/2011/12/what-can-i-do.html

  • @ItOnlyTakesaGirl Sorry, that link is not working. Go to my blog (the link is in the description of the video) and look for the post entitled "What Can I Do?" Thanks for your interest!

  • Awesome video and also one of my fav Zoe songs.

  • Like if Mrs. Jacquez brought you here. -KAMM

  • Great Video, showing the plight of so many young girls around the world.

Thank you for spreading the message.

  • I never cease to be amazed about the amount of people in the developed world, in this modern age of electronic media where reports of a famous singers death can be spread around the world in less than 20 minutes, that are totally unaware of the terrible things some young girls have to endure and not always in third world counties as you may assume, some times in first world countries as well, where you would think our "Educated" communities would not allow it.

  • This is to all those who keep saying what about boys...this particular video is about the hardships that many young girls face at a young age. Yes young males have hardships in these developing countries as well but this video is for girls and for those who are asking about the males, then you should all make a fantastic video like this one

  • All children need a good education. If it's only girls, those girls will still be able to do NOTHING about those injustices. Boys need the education to break free of prejudices. Nothing is a better deterrent towards inequality than an expanded mind, regardless of who the injustice is directed at.

  • 1:43 a toilet seat in the backround??

    does that have some meaning???

  • @246alive A Child's toilet seat - it Means children use the toilet.

  • Err, not just*

  • Maybe not the rape so much, but this happens to all genders, just not females. I don't mean to come across as rude, but problems like these are shared by everyone. I like the video, but in my opinion it shouldn't just target the female audience, it should target both. Everyone needs help, and videos like these. Great video either way, though.

  • @Criticalt3 Excuse me, would you mind looking through male privileges before you can open your mouth.

  • @Criticalt3 yes things like child poverty, slavery, illness and even rape happens to boys aswell as girls but the point of this video is that there is an overwhelming majority that are girls. this is because male education is considered more important than female. that is what this video is about. it is not trying to say that boys arnt important as well, but there is a greater need in education for women x

  • "End Human Bankruptcy"an idea whose time has come.

  • One of the most inspiring videos ever. (':

  • GIRLS AWARENESS .

  • I'm A boy but that was really good

  • @dingumfCallofDuty Pointing out the reality of cruel gender inequities is not sexist. Girls face many challenges that boys do not. For example, genital mutilation is a singularly reprehensible practice which is unique to girls. Injustice happens to both genders but this video is about girls... not everyone. The truth is that men can be cruel & girls are defenseless when they are. It is not sexist to address that. It is "feminist" but in a good way. Criticizing The Case Of The Letters Is Petty.

  • @dingumfCallofDuty how is this sexist? it doesn't mention men aside from when it says girls in the third world are forced to marry older men. I mean, it doesn't take a sexist to see that girls in the third world are at great disadvantages with no education, no access to healthcare and being forced to marry early, and all because of their gender. the video clearly has nothing to do with sexism against men, it just cites information on sexism against girls.

  • @dingumfCallofDuty Have you ever heard of a boy being forced to marry an older woman? It is not sexist at all. No one is say that men shouldn't have an education either -- instead the point was that everyone should get the opportunity. Women have been constantly belittled and degraded thoughout history. Women have always been told to get married and have children, whereas men were told to get a job.

  • @dingumfCallofDuty Also, I am not quite sure why you called this video 'feminist' in such a negative way. I hope you are aware that feminism is about the equality of both genders, and really how could there ever been anything negative about that? (I won't even get started on your grammatical purism, and the negative affects that this has on our language and society, but whatever!)

  • i support equal rights to the fullest. no one should be discrminated for being not normal in any way, in fact when you think about it there is no such thing as normal.

  • Thank you for finding a beautiful way to bring home an awful situation, even as you end it in a hopeful way.

  • beautiful, brought tears to my eyese

  • Equal rights for women = a healthier society.

One of our biggest problems in modern society is the suppression of the Feminine. By oppressing women we oppress part of men as well. Don't fight for Women's Rights because you are a Feminist, do it because you are a Humanist.

  • I'm glad I'm part of a religion whose primary principle is that of human rights and the respect of other's freedoms. Look up "Thelema" if you will.

  • I will share this video not only because I fight for the rights of women who are abused but because men and little boys are abused too, & it goes further than that. Abuse is about having power over someone else, it has nothing to do with your gender, race, culture or religion. Someone who abuses power will rape a granny of 80 or a baby of 1 years old - those in power who abuse it lack honour, integrity, compassion & respect and the basic principles of understanding what it is to be human.

  • If any of you would like to help, I started a chapter of Building Tomorrow at my college. 100% of donations go toward building a school in Uganda. You can donate (preferably to Doane College) if you search Building Tomorrow and hit "donate"

    Thanks :)

  • @AileenJG Don't just donate - I live in Africa, and a lot of money that is donated is lost in translation. Identify what you want your money to go toward, let's say "food". Don't just donate toward "food". Find a company in Uganda that supplies food, build a relationship with them, have them invoice you and prove they delivered the food.

  • I wonder ho many in the 3rd world or developing countries can read the messages...

  • Excellent video. <3

  • Great video! I kept expecting it to also include the stats about the extent to which educating girls leads to better economies for developing countries--they are educated, they work, they earn money, they provide stable and healthier environments for their children, they have fewer children so there are more resources for those they do have . . . and the net effect is a better economy when this is rolled up to the national level. Amazing. Keep at it!

  • I teared up. Thanks for caring about this sometimes cruel and evil world we live in. <3

  • thank you for your afford

  • You broke my heart. Thank you!

  • Thank God for teachers who work with girls, but I just feel like the boys are lagging behind. My sons didnt do well in school

  • @A4est but your sons are IN school. these girls are in a nation where they aren't even given a chance.

  • Please continue to share.

  • Wow so power showing it to all

  • Thank you

    Girls ~ Women

    We will...we are rising up.

    Sharing this

  • Thank you

    Very well presented

  • Stirring, emotionally moving... But, who in their right mind thought it made sense to put subtitles on a video that IS ENTIRELY MADE OF TITLES!???!!!! Seriously. Get those subtitles gone and repost! Please! They're ruining what would be an otherwise beautiful video.

  • @chrisgelles Subtitles can be turned on and off by individual users by clicking the red CC button just below the video. I added English subtitles for google-based foreign language and visually-impaired translation of the text. I have also added actual Spanish, Japanese and German translations. I hope to add more. I am sorry that you found them distracting, but at least you now know that you can turn them off if you would like. :)

  • @ItOnlyTakesaGirl Thank you so much for that info. All these years on youtube and I never realized I could turn the captions off... duh lol

  • @ItOnlyTakesaGirl Thanks for clarifying re: the subtitles. I too found them a distraction.

  • @chrisgelles Wow this touched my heart so much and is so true. I come from poverty but thank God my daughter finished her college education. not so good for her brothers though.I was severely depressed when they were little

  • Interesting, but I think you're trying to lump too many issues together. Forced early marriage, HIV, and FGM (while all problems shared primarily by developing nations and affecting women) are separate issues and need to be dealt with separately. That being said, to some degree I think it is fair to be culturally relativistic. Everything needs to be taken in perspective, and it takes a lot more than idealism for a girl to rise above what she is viewed as by her society. Nice video though.

  • Trying to change the world is great and all... but I believe it's more important for us in the western world to fix our own house first. There's more going on here than lack of education... at least education in the traditional sense. One might say that means our education system is flawed and needs to change before we can really hope to help anyone else.

  • Amazing and TRUE....THINK, LISTEN & BELIEVE in yourself, your daughter, granddaughter, niece, sister, mother, aunt and young girls and women everywhere....we DO make a difference!

  • "Seeking knowledge is compulsory for each and every Muslim (both male and female)" - Prophet Muhammad.

  • Imagining thousands of those little kids getting tormented got tears in my eyes.

  • Could i get a citation on the 66% of labor, 10% of income, 1% of property statistic? I'd like to share that.

  • @TheLionside I address this very issue in my blog. The link is in the description of my video. Check it out!

  • @TheLionside I also learned that in my cross cultural studies class LAST semester! VERY TRUE! still up to date!

  • 10 million girls worldwide are married before they turn 18, usually with no say in when or whom they marry. Child marriage almost always cuts girls’ education short, trapping them and their children in poverty. It often leads to early pregnancy and childbirth, putting girls’ lives and health at risk. This video gives some gud message.. defend the rights of girls to health, education and the opportunity to fulfil their potential.

  • Thank you from the bottom of my heart for this video.

  • Wow, that was so powerful.

  • This was moving... Thank you for bringing awareness to this. I wish this was regularly televised.

  • This should open the eyes of us all as a human species. For it is an unbalanced world in which we live in and as long as we continue to think of any female as less then men we can not change the world in which we live. The mentality of men and women has to be that of an equal and balanced condition. This is the law of the universe, everything must be in balance or when the tension is too great on one side, balance HAS to happen. We can do this ourselves or have it done for us. lets do it ourself

  • "…it is incumbent upon the girls of this glorious era to be fully versed in the various branches of knowledge, in sciences and the arts and all the wonders of this pre-eminent time, that they may then educate their children and train them from their earliest days in the ways of perfection." "The world of humanity has two wings—one is women and the other men. Not until both wings are equally developed can the bird fly. Should one wing remain weak, flight is impossible." -the Baha'i writings

  • to those of you who believe all religions advocate inequality... check out the Baha'i writings which advocate universal education but, if resources are limited, they indicate emphasis should be given to the academic education of women over men only because the women will become the first and most important teachers of the SONS and DAUGHTERS thereby improving the next generation. Men however, should still receive enough education to be productive skilled citizens and provide for their families.

  • from the Baha'i writings: "Work ye for the guidance of the women","teach the young girls and the children, so that the mothers may educate their little ones from their earliest days, thoroughly train them, rear them to have a goodly character and good morals, guide them to all the virtues of humankind","Thus shall these tender infants be nurtured at the breast of the knowledge of God and His love. Thus shall they grow and flourish, and be taught righteousness and the dignity of humankind"

  • This is very true. It makes me very sad to see this :(

  • <333333333

  • Gender inequality, racial inequality, moral inequality.. these are the teachings of most religions. Whether particular religions (like christianity) have tried to remove themselves from these things or not, they can still be found in their sacred texts. Any person, regardless of gender, race, creed, religious belief, or whatever other division can be created, should never be made to feel inferior to any other person... I am so thankful that my daughter is an educated, empowered woman!!

  • @jhuffman2424 Sikhism is one religion that doesn't advocates any of the inequalities you just mentioned..

  • @jhuffman2424 You comment about religion is a veiled (excuse the pun) attempt to discriminate against Muslims. However, here in Egypt the reason some girls are not educated both CHRISTIANS and MUSLIMS is because they are POOR!!!! and school costs money. The middle class and upper class girls are educated beyond belief. One of my MUSLIM friends here is working and is working on her Masters in Microbology. Another her PhD in education and another her Masters in Music.

  • @jhuffman2424 Actually many times its not the fault of religion.

  • @jhuffman2424 don't forget judaism; it's only some religions, but not most of them.

  • @ MeepullStewray: I have to disagree, because the "dominant culture" is much deeper than religion. It's a result of an ages-old patriarchal mentality and generations of male domination and values which have resulted in our current "systems," which are outdated and have resulted in a world unbalanced. I just think greed, the need for power and competition, elitism, corruption, domination, and separation are no longer working. These times are calling for change.

  • thank you.

  • sickening

  • I am very saddened of this world.. I will destroy it, and create a new world of peace and harmony!

  • Great video. good luck in the competition I liked and shared. The only people who will dislike this are old mysoginistic men. I'm old but want to see all educated and free of fear, superstition and ignorance. x

  • I usually watch half a video due to my limited attention span but I'm glad I managed to watch this all the way through. Nothing is greater than protecting life and freedom.

    Peace ;)

  • 43 people are wasting Earth's air right now

  • Hope others surf over to your blog - itonlytakesagirl.blogspot.com

  • @hortnut Thanks, me too!

  • You know what. Fuck this world. If things don't change soon, humanity will be at stake and future generations will not be able to see the world as a wonderful place.

  • @A1D4PRODUCTIONS I am the future generation, I already know this is a fucked up world with corrupt and cruel people and that is why we as the future generations will change it. For as the old generation will fade a new one will a appear creating a new and better world.

  • @A1D4PRODUCTIONS People have always said this since the dawn of time, the world is not ending. But it is our obligation to change it for the better as decent human begins.

  • You have already proved your title right. It really does only take ONE girl to enlighten others on an issue nobody would think twice about. Good job!

  • "Good people will do good things, and bad people will do bad things. But for good people to do bad things -- that takes religion." -- Steven Weinberg

  • This is a great way to support the women of the community and world

  • Thank you. Made me cry. My husband just told me about this and that he had donated $100 already. Have shared on FB and I hope real change can happen. Just finished a Cultural Anthropology class, I loved it but makes you realise how much gender inequality runs through every aspect of culture.

As Tim Minchin says/sings ' we are just monkeys with shoes' (no offence to monkeys)

    (How can there be dislikes??!?)

  • Brilliant way to distill a tough message to its essence and capture the hearts of people who normally don't pay attention to this type of info. Love it and am sharing it as much as possible.

  • This would be an amazing Project 4 Awesome video

  • Love this! Good luck!

  • Nicely done....it should make some people think a little (if that is at all possible).

  • beautifully done. kudos.

  • Excellent video - and so very true! I hope it is viewed my millions!!!

  • fantastic, I will share this with evberyone I know!

  • great video!!

  • screw the "like" button, where is the "love" button

  • Good one... View & Read fully and support by sharing it....

  • Well in all fairness this video could be named "it only takes a boy" if the situation were reverse and still have the same meaning. Everyone deserves an education!

Religion unfortunately is the dominant culture in many of these places, and it places lesser value in girls, this is why it has happened this way.

  • @MeepullStewray Actually, it would'nt be reversed. Statistically, men invest less into their families than women do, which means women will invest more of the resources they earn into their children, and their children's education. In addition, women are usually the primary care givers so they are responsible for making sure children stay in school, do homework, etc.

  • @MeepullStewray LASTLY, women/mothers are usually the ones who have to champion their daughters' cause to stay in school. Men can make a difference, but its more of a difference if you focus on the women. They can raise stronger boys too :)

  • this video is just powerful! wonderful job!

  • wow...that was amazing!! im totally helping out

  • 17 people don't have the coordination to click the button they actually intended, that's the only plausible explanation. ;-)

  • I agree with @bookblab - disable your comments. Those who are touched by your video will respond in another way, either by sending you a message or helping with your organisations - actions do speak louder than words. Keep it up!

  • Very thought provoking and with 'no' sound. Thank God I was able to go to school and learned to read. I saw this living in the Homeless Shelter. Girls, small girls, and boys not able to read, some not even in school because they were living on the streets, then in shelters. Are we a third world country?

  • beautiful. powerful. moving. excellent

  • Just a thought, DISABLE YOUR COMMENTS on this video. This video is great, and amazing for a teen girl to have produced. But there are so many sick people out there who just want to be the most vulgar and shocking on youtube video comments. You will get TONS of hits, and you do not need to open yourself up to receive such ugliness. GREAT JOB!

  • Thank you for this timely message. I hope the ignorance and negativity expressed by some of these comments won't discourage you from trying to make the world a better place.

  • Your video is powerful in getting the message across! Thank you for sharing your passion and helping many understand the truth. Childrens Education Foundation - Vietnam exists to help Vietnamese children, especially girls, receive an education and have a future with choices. Linda

  • why blaming developing countries see this link about US 1 out of 5 women in US have been raped or sexually abused .....

  • I believe that much of what this video describes is going on within uber-religious communities right here the good ole USA.

  • I have a feeling that many comments are being written from the stand point of their own country (Western). This video's stats are taking the WHOLE world into consideration. There are countries out there, people, where bad things are happening. Your country isn't the only country in the world, you know. Oh and the UK is NOT an American state...

  • Also bear in mind most of these girls come from countries and nations where the average life expectancy is in the mid to latter forties, if you put aside personal opinions and comparisons to what the west deems acceptable, look into life expectancy's by country...some people average only high 30's....

  • @vascone315 That's kinda the point though; if a girl has access to education & is prepared for a healthy, wealth-creating life & her daughter, etc. is raised the same way, it would go a long way to breaking the cycle of poverty & high morality rates. When half your population is not educated, you lose half your innovators, your entrepreneurs, half your movers/shakers who invigorate society. Even if a woman is educated & chooses to stay home, she raises healthier, educated kids.

  • What kind of a completely rotten, worthless piece of humanity do you have to be to have been one of the 15 don't likes on this video?

  • "Women are the niggers of the world." -Yoko Ono

  • WOW. Made me cry, very informative.

  • I dream of a day when the world wakes up from its madness, and demands what's right for all people. Not just girls.

For the record, genital mutilation for infant males is accepted and favored by most in the United States. It's time for a new way of thinking.

  • Problem is that it's not uncommon for disobedient/dishonorable children to be killed in some countries doing this.

  • It's a mere opinion that 15 year olds are only children. Therefore, it is a mere opinion that it is wrong that they are getting married. I also have to question where the facts and figures are coming from.

Otherwise, it was well done, and everything flowed nicely. Loved the part where the grandmother, mother, and daughter all held up signs - it would really get the point across.

  • @amanda2324 The human brain is not fully developed until age 25 & teens are CHEMICALLY more likely to make rash/incomplete decision making. They need time to navigate & process the world in order to be ready for marriage & child rearing. It differs for maturity from area to area, but it still means girls are being cut from education access when married off. Also, teen pregnancy increases risk of hypertension, low birth weight, premature birth & higher risk for postpartum depression.

  • @Direness "The human brain is not fully developed until age 25"

Then why isn't the marriage age 25, if you're going to be using this as a reason that they can't get married? And what about people whose brains finish developing early?

"teens are CHEMICALLY more likely to make rash/incomplete decision making."

Where's your source? Did it only study American or Canadian teens? Did it study people from third world countries?

  • @amanda2324 well, it's scientifically proven that something in teens brains aren't connected or aren't developed. something of the sort.

that's why us teens are known for making really bad decisions.

  • @Direness "They need time to navigate & process the world in order to be ready for marriage & child rearing." As do a large number of adults I've met. My parents have 8 kids, been married for 20 years, and they're STILL not ready to be married/have kids.

"Also, teen pregnancy increases risk of hypertension, low birth weight, premature birth & higher risk for postpartum depression."

I heard that getting pregnant as a teen is actually better because they're younger.

  • Ten people need to sit down and have a talk with Mom.

  • Widow Self Immolation.....

Satī (Devanagari: सती, the feminine of sat "true"; also called suttee)[5] was a religious funeral practice among some Indian communities in which a recently widowed woman would have immolated herself on her husband’s funeral pyre.[1] The practice is rare and has been outlawed in India since 1829.[2]

  • @IsaacBlackwood Even though it is outlawed it still happens in rural North India because 1) the government isn't strong enough to enforce it's laws over 1.2 billion people and 2) tradition still holds sway over village people which account for the majority of India's population. Lawfully anyone seeing a widow committing Sati is supposed to stop her but too often people look the other way. A widow in India has 3 options- become an outcast of society, sati, or marry her husband's brother.

  • @IsaacBlackwood Outlawed but yes it has occurred in recent time rare that it may be.

  • Only the adults can change things now, vote against sheria law in the us. Look it up ladies FMG is a part of their law. Don't look for FMG as it is played down to be circumcision for girls. We don't need to step back in the past where women were owned(just like slaves). Vote out the WRONG set of laws and the people who want them. Lets move forward to equality for all. Your vote will guarantee freedom, education and safety while your girl is able to enjoy her childhood.

  • @RedneckDeerhunter252 When you factor in domestic work women definitely work a double shift more often than men.
