i went to to learn from him and paid him something when i could but it was never an obligation. It is fair to say that it is a source of livelihood for others but i think criticism of youtube mbira videos should never be made from a financial perspective ever. My only criticism of youtube videos can only go as far as saying that they need to be complemented by actual person to person learning, where one gets feedback on what they have learnt. Otherwise if more people play mbira coz of this, cool
tatenda zvikuru gwenyambira, I am glad that someone has raised the issue that mbira should be passed on without a necessity for payment. My first mbira teacher started to teach me after i had shown a passion in the instrument. i remember asking him how much it would cost and he said, 'mbira hadzisi dzangu saka ndokubhadharisa kuti ini ndini ani? Kasi kana uchida, uno ngondipa pawakwanisira' . trans, "the mbira is not mine so who am i to charge you a fee for learning, however pay what you can"
I do not actually benefit from any mbira tracks and always credit the player. those who subscribe to me can look at a description and use me as a point of referrence for what cds to buy and which artists are hot. I am actually in touch with a lot of the artists via email Like Erica, Mbira dot org and many others. If the artist specifically asks me to remove a track then I always do but often my posting a single free track from their album tends to get them more queries over time.
What a wonderful version! Please post a tutorial, if you find the time.

Thank you for your explanation, Gwenyambira. I was wrong when I guessed this to be Forward Kwenda, which led to my other questions.
That mbira music should be freely passed on is a great pleasure.
I cannot say, though, that it is wrong ofr anyone to try & make a living from their skills, especially if money is scarce.
I am very glad to have made proper contactt now, and hope we can meet one day.
