There are methods of meditation, the Western religions use, e.g. singing and praying, for, as you said, getting an audience with god. Islam, they use it to a more submissive method. Buddhism, Hinduism and Sikhism, all say the same method of meditation. Om. They all sit in the same manner, they all speak of peace and tranquility, merging with the Brahma, Waheguru or with providing a peace of mind (God).
