Truly one of the greatest wrestling personas. They took a shot in the dark and, in my opinion, in an attempt to embarrass the Rhodes family even more, the most intriguing of any wrestling persona was born.
This is the rarest of gimmicks in that Dustin took yet another off beat wrestling gimmick and actually took it seriously. Goldust in these days was not unlike Heath Ledger's Joker.
@FrozenIce1097 Daniel Bryan doesn't use a gimmick. He got over thanks to his skills and the credibility he built up in the indies. And as for Dolph Ziggler, I think he'd benefit more from studying the late Mr. Perfect.
@L1701 Sometimes I think I'm watching Mr. Perfect when I see Dolph wrestle. Dolph still has a long way to go, but his method of selling is almost identical to Curt's.
I know this is not about cm punk.but I know some idiot didn't jus bash him I doubt you seen a cm punk match or a promo because he's nothing like the miz and cena
Goldust is amazing. He always will be. Has Undertaker and Goldust ever fought? That would've been awesome. Two larger than life characters, of course only one took off and is considered legendary by everyone, and the other is forgotten within the fabric of WWE's long, illustrious history.
@LordKalbert they feuded throughout the middle of 1996 having 3 matches at the In Your House PPVs. The one that sticks out the most is the casket match at 'IYH 8: Beware of Dog' you should check it out! Definitely two of the best characters to come out of WWF/E
WHO IS JOHN CENA? CM PUNK?? SERIOUSLY WHO THE FUCK IS THE MIZ ??? XD WHAT A BUNCH OF JOKES COMPARED TO GUYS LIKE GOLDUST...ATTITUDE ERA FTW 4EVER AND ALWAYS..BRING BACK THE ATTITUDE ERA AND I'LL WATCH IT AGAIN ALONG WITH DOZENS OF OTHERS I KNOW...HAVE NOT WATCHED SINCE 2001 AND DONT EVER PLAN ON WATCHING AGAIN
Goldust should of been World Champion by 97 what a waste could of actually seen him have bitter rivalries with Steve Austin and the Undertaker with him in this Attire
But no they downgraded him to jobbing and by 99 he was back in that shithole WCW
ive read alot of negative things about this gimmick..personally, i think goldust, along with another criticised gimmick, doink the clown, were strokes of sheer genius!
godust as a heel was SO MUCH BETTER than goldust as a face it's unbelievable. goldust as a heel was so refined, magical and creepy at the same time, the american answer to the great muta. goldust as a face was just plain lewd, stupid and disgusting. Everytime regal cuts a promo about goldust it sounds like he's talking about a bitchy whore, and heeldust was just not that.
@metathus: I agree. I've told my friends several times that Goldust looks like a comic book character come to life. DC, with its dark and thought provoking characters, would be perfect for Goldust. Like Joker, Goldust as a villain would have been wonderful. Refined, creepy, yet evil to the core.
@Waluigifan94 Way better wrestler? Naw. Better, but not way better. Better at his role? Youre telling me a legit bi sexual man is not as good playing a flamboyant bi sexual as someone who is not? Doesnt make sense again.

@TherealRNO That would actually work. Goldust faced Undertaker back in '96 but at the time Taker was going at it with Mankind who interfered in the match. Goldust and Undertaker didn't really have any real storyline going behind their match other than the fact that Goldust kind of looked after Mankind like a father would a son briefly. Could definitely work out in a WM match. Goldust deserves to be in a big match like that anyways.
@Summerslam96: The Brothers of Destruction--Undertaker (Ministry) & Kane (masked), teamming with Goldust (the "homosexual" one, not the comedic farce he's become since being electrocuted by Evolution years back), Mick Foley (any personality, but preferably either Mankind or Cactus Jack), Boogeyman, Papa Shango (Vodoo Witch Doctor), and either Gangrel or Kevin Thorn would be the GREATEST stable of FREAKS ever assembled, IMO.
'you see, gold shits no darkness look at it. gold only shits light!'
can't beleive this character was introduced as early as 95. i always look at wrestling and dates oddly. like 95, well hogan and his era made their last appearance like 93' and it's shocking to think dustin's character was so close to the cartoon era of wwf.
This promo is other worldly. Have no idea how to explain it, but it feels like one of those documentaries on Syfy or History channel about ghosts and aliens. Goldust is such an amazing character with Dusting Rhodes behind him. Now that Booker T is back I so wish for him and Goldust to do some segments together again.
@countbloodula Actually, 87-93 Was great, 93-mid 96 sucked (other than HBK and creative gimmick like this), mid 96-2003 were awesome and priceless, and 2003-present day suck ass
One of the best gimmicks of all times. This is what we need today.. different characters for every wrestler...all the wrestlers in WWE right now are like clones of Randy Orton... arrogant, think he is the best blah blah blah.. in my opinion the wrestlers are acting... too normal. the "realistic" gimmicks of today don't work without the violence of the attitude era. if WWE is PG now why cant they go back to the types of gimmicks from the 80s and early 90s?.
@seploud Well, that was a time when people thought the gimmick was reality. It would be a lot harder to have outlandish (awesome) characters such as Ultimate Warrior, Doink the Clown, Razor Ramon, etc. etc. It would be awesome to see these gimmicks again, but I don't think we will ever see times like this again. I, personally, can't stand the fact that Cena & Orton were shoved down the fans' throats and bore the hell out of me. If they're the best WWE can offer, then there's no hope.
@maravich12 Well, if we know is scripted I don't know why they can't do these gimmicks like a character in a movie... in a movie we know that's an actor but we watch it anyway. I think now that everybody knows the fact, the WWE can do any thing as long it looks cool.
Believe it or not, when Goldust was initially cutting these promos I actually tought he was none other than regular WCW jobber Mark Starr, it wasn't until he won the IC title from Razor at the Rumble and lost some of his face paint when I just went: OMIGOSH! that's The Natural Dustin Rhodes actually coming out of the closet!!! the Blacktop Bully must have hit him so hard in the head :p
Goldust needs a push. Dustin Runnels is a fucking amazing worker, super charismatic and can work a mic too. He's the total package. Only thing he lacks is a roided-up physique. But that shouldn't matter.
@misterlaufeyson That's exactly what I have been thinking for years now. This video comes from a time when each character had a storyline. Every character mattered and their storylines showed it. We'll never see wrestlers like Goldust ever again.
Wow, WWE really, really dropped the ball with Goldust. Dustin could have been a huge star. The guy just oozes charisma. Goldust has more charisma than 80 percent of today's roster (who are incredibly boring/bland).
Being original in the WWE today is akin to being a pedophile.
@Treasurefan02 So true my man, so true. He could be sitting on top of the Smackdown roster right now, if they had him go back into the Bizarre One gimmick (1995-1999). Easily.
Man, I miss old vignettes like these! Goldust, Mankind, & Razor Ramon had the best pre-debut vignettes EVER imo! I think the most recent vignette WWE put out was for Kizarny (the carnival dude who spoke weird language) but that gimmick didn't last long, haha!
@HaRdCoReLeGeNd316 So true now he's just a cartoon character they tollay fucked his gimmick up. he's nothing but a jobber now i also liked his blck reign gimmick.
@HaRdCoReLeGeNd316 you are so right and i hope the wwe heard you as wrestling's become so boring.never so boring as now but hark goldust has returned.
