I'm having a problem with my yellow powder. I just tried it to see if it was really that powerful. I melted Sodium Carbonate with Sulfur in a 2:1 ratio(by weight). I dont know if i melted it right though. After that, i took it off the heat, powdered it, and then added my KNO3. It burned slowly with a orange flame.
golden powder is potassium nitrate and ascorbic acid (vitamin C), usually melted together. Yellow powder is potassium nitrate, potassium carbonate and sulfur melted together in a 3:2:1 ratio.
your potash should be pretty pure before you use it, there are a few ways to purify it, just google it, much faster than me explaining. Most methods for making yellow powder say melt the sulfur and carbonate carefully and on a low heat, to produce the potassium sulfides etc. some methods describe adding the potassium nitrate in while its on the heat, others say it's too unsafe. I would add the KNO3 off the heat, just to be safe. Also try not to use a flame burner to melt them, use electric.
I do not recommend using this mixyure, as it is unstable and hygroscopic, and is dangerous to make. If you have potassium nitrate and sulfur, either make blackpowder or r-candy, and crush the r-candy up. if you have fine metal powder, such as aluminium, magnesium or zinc, you can make some good flash powders too. If you are new to pyrotechnics, then stick with blackpowder and safer stuff before you try yellow powder, aka "fulminating powder". PM me if you need help or have problems.
I'd tryed to make yellow powder in standard formulations (KNO3/K2CO3/S in the formulation: 3/2/1), but instead of potassium carbonate I'd used sodium carbonate, when the mixture was prepaired, I was trying to detonate half a gram of the stuff but instead of detonating it only burnt verry slowly (not even a third of the speed normal black powder)
A few weeks ago I made a new batch, this time I was using NaOH, first I melt the NaOH and te S, when the chemical reaction was finished I grinded the sodium polysulfides into a fine powder then I added the KNO3, A few grains on a pease of aluminium foil gave a nice bang:)
yeh dude you can get sodium hydroxide in vertually all drain cleaners like draino etc. it usually comes in pure form. oh yeh and it is cheapest as caustic soda
The thing is, you can use bicarbonate. Because you're heating it over a flame, which is hotter than 120F, it will decompose into carbonate. Or, you can take a small peice of al foil, put a gram of baking soda on it, and heat it to red heat iwht a blowtorch.
It has worked with sodium carbonate, to make it either heat or boil the heck out of a slurry of sodium bicarbonate. I havent tried any other oxidizers with it yet but im sure chlorates/perchlorates would work out fine or most other nitrates. Im pretty sure the sulfur reacting with the carbonate creating polysulfides as fuel is the reason it burns/detonates so well so the oxidizer shouldn't matter.
It made a hole in the foil an area a bit larger then the pile of powder and dented the rest of it. If you are going to try this wear hearing protection it is very loud. later I'll get a video of a gram of it on a can lid heated on a hotplate. Amazing how powerful this stuff is,even unconfined it is deafeningly loud.
how did you make your yellow powder did you melt the sulphur and carbonate toghether then grind in the kno3 please reply

so i can make this with both potassium carbonate and sodium but would it be with the same ratios please reply

are there other ways of detonating it?

you are meant to use potassium carbonate, i don't have it either so i'll try sodium carbonate and i will give you feedback

terrorists use yellow powder (:

are yellow and gold powder the same? if not what are the ingrediance and do u just mix it like flash powder on a pice of paper of like r candey?

Hey dude, you seem pro enough to help me out.I have potash, is there any way to extract potassium carbonate or should i use it right away?
After that what should i do?How should i melt em together without triggering something unwanted?
Thx dude :D!

did you melt them together?

ok so you used sodium hydroxide instead. Interesting :)
I'll have to try that, whre did you get solid NaOH?
nirvanafan833 3 years ago
You can buy it in allmost every DIY store (in the netherlands, for the US or UK I don't know). Mostly it is sold under the name coustic soda.

And precisely might I inquire as to what this "yellow powder" of which you speak is?

thank you very much I think I will try this with ammonium nitrate/washing soda and sulfur

They don't. I was to help out an experiment which used sodium chlorate. The product burned slowly.

that was a damn good explanation(my spelling sucks)

im wondering would sodium carbonate work in place of potasium carbonate and can I use any oxidizer or onli kno3?

what is the ''yellow powder'' i want to buy some or make some....
nonamer101 5 years ago
Your making COBs, I don't think I'll be telling you how to make anything...
originalpapyro 5 years ago
Haha, even if he knew it he wouldn't be able to use in bombs. It only detonates when melted :p

@originalpapyro what is a COB? (just asking)

@nonamer101 KNO3 + S + NaHCO3
