People masturbate over the A-10 so often, they forget to make the proper comparisons. The reality is that the A-10 is a platform that was chosen for its cheapness. It is obsolete against tanks and is only useful in small conflicts where you have complete air superiority and have suppressed enemy AA. So basically its perfect for what we use it for.

The magical depleted uranium API round can penetrate something like 70mm of Rolled Homogenous Armor at 500m. The Abrams has the equivalent of nearly 1000mm of RHA in the front of its turret. You do the math.

Why destroy a tank in minutes when most weapons do so in seconds? The GAU-8 works as well as old RPGs: you have to hit in the right spot or its useless.

Not really, I've studied enough about the A10, besides being in the Air Force myself at one time, to know what I'm talking about. During its development in the 70's test pilots would fire bursts much longer then shown here and only had one flame out incident where the pilot had to eject sometime in '75. The Gau8's recoil force is around 10,000 lbs @4200 rpm. The gun was designed and tested to fire all 1140 rounds without overheating which now use aluminum casings instead of steel.

I currently maintain the A-10 myself. If you are refering to and engine "flame out", the reason that only one happened is because the A-10 has a spark plug like ignitor that fires once the gun is fired due to the lack of oxygen to keep the "flame" lit. I believe if the aircraft were to stall because of the recoil the engineers would have integrated something different to prevent that.

The flame out was due to a long burst strafe that stalled both engines out, after 3 attempts to restart the pilot had to eject. This problem has been fixed since then of course but as for the over heating issue the plane can fire more then a 2 or 3 sec burst and still be ok. As a matter of fact one of these videos on the right side bar will show test footage of an 8 or 9 second burst and still it fly's without stalling. The goalkeeper system also uses a GAU8 set up as its main gun.
