I don't think John Starks and Allen Houston could be Jordan-stoppers because playing with the Knicks was just too easy for Jordan. He usually went for 40+ points against the Knicks. Van Gundy's comments only would burn and motivate Jordan to play harder.
This is so nostalgic....I still tell people that the 96-97 Knicks would've gave the Bulls a run for their money. I'm not sure they would've run the ECF but it would be a intense 7 game series. If memory serves me correct the knicks beat the bulls twice that season even the last game in Chicago that season. The Knicks that year was deep with Starks, Ward, B. Williams, Dudley, and John Wallace off the bench. 99 knicks was nice but this team was veteran savvy and deep.
just a thought or FACT! teams study mj before like no one now, i mean teams would actually study mj and plan "how to contain" all the time! that's how great he was!
The NBA on NBC had better coverage than ABC because when NBC was airing games, it had a better match-up between rival teams and NBC made the games more global too. Especially with the pro players entering the Olympics for the summer as well as the start of the WNBA.
96-97 Knicks would've beaten the Bulls that year, except PJ Brown flipped over Charlie Ward in game 5 against Miami and the Knicks choked the 3-1 lead they had over Miami.
Miami then gets swept by the Bulls, Michael has the flu game, and hello, 5th championship.
Ewing broke his wrist in 97-98 and was really never the same and neither was the team.
this was the year the Knicks could have beaten the bulls? Wasnt Ewing almost in a wheelchair by this point? No offense intended just curious.. (fan of both teams)
@oldmanwithers1 Nope, even Jordan admitted we would have beaten them. 97 was our best team, even with Pat declining rapidly at that point. He had the scoring by then with LJ and Allan.
@PAZ0619 Yes he is..have you heard some of the crap he says on ABC telecasts? The things that come out of his mouth shows his stupidity. Ha ha..he was and will remain a MEDIOCRE NBA head coach.
@jimmy3610 Well I think he is a decent coach, thanks to his work ethic.....His Knicks team in the late 90s to early 2000s was always competitive. But his comments on ABC were not particularly insightful.
The Knicks would've beat the Bulls in the ECF that year. I'll always hate the Miami Heat and getting D-Wade in free agency would be the perfect payback.
that was a DEEP Knicks team - think about it. Ewing, Oakley, Houston, Starks, LJ, to name a few. It was a transitional period between the Riley Knicks and the Knicks of the late 90's. It's a damn shame that fight happened against Miami because they were winning that series 3-1.
Knicks had their deepest team that year and their best chance to beat the Bulls but I'd never count the Bulls out. Would've loved to see that series- too bad the NBA made those retarded suspensions....
Yeah you know we did it to our selves but MIA knew they would lose so they tricked us, everybody knows including so called bulls fans and we all know how many fake ones there were just like modern fake laker fans, knew the bulls had no chance against that team, we beat the bulls twice they lost only ten times, so I know we had it in us.
Look for the knicks to make some runs in the next year or two we have a good team our record is just chemistry
Finally the knicks are getting under the cap- they should have started to rebuild years ago by letting Ewing retire a Knick instead of trading him for cap killer Glen Rice. Good thing there's no more of this signing past prime guys to mid level money cap killing crap like under Laden and Thomas. With cap relief there's a future even if there's no Lebron. Although the Net loss looks bad this month the Knicks have played solid defense I think the future looks good they just need time.
@Konephoros Checketts wasn't the owner. He was the President. And HE WOULD HAVE NEVER traded Ewing. He stepped down from his post the year before they traded Ewing -- I believe he (Checketts) left right as the lockout was about to occur. Layden traded Ewing.
@Esquire212 No, Checketts was at the helm. Trust me. I followed the front office like a hawk. Checketts didn't want to do it, Dolan FORCED him to trade Pat.
@trtomkitinholloywood The Knicks won the last regular season game against the Bulls, they get "only" 69 victories in 1997 cause of that loss in the United Center. EmanuelKnicks have the game on tube.
I miss the NBA on NBC fuck ESPN and ABC. These were real rivalries, today it's like everything the players say are written by publicists, I just don't see the tenacity in the league that I used to. Knicks Bulls, Knicks Pacers, Knicks Heat, Bulls Blazers, Blazers Lakers, Kings Lakers- now those were teams that really hated each other. There are no more rivalries left....
I was a huge Chicago Bulls fan back in the day and if the Bulls and the Knicks didn't play each other in the playoffs, it wasn't worth watching....these 2 teams had wars on the court.
@dudewattf this is something anybody can do in NBA 2K or NBA Live lol. seriously tells u how damn great those Bulls were. there still good, but these r obviously new times
This was the year when I really felt this knicks team could've gave the bulls a run for their money. Imagine if the knicks/heat fight didn't happen. Would've been a classic 7 game eastern conference series.....Knicks was extremely deep that year
These are the good ol days! Times suck so much right now in eveywhere. TV shows suck, wrestling sucks (You wrestling fans we miss the Monday Night Wars), sports mostly suck. Football and Baseball are still ok but NBA sucks. These were the days where teams and players hated eachother and were true thugs. Now you have fake rivalries and teams the the Magic making the finals.
I still to this day would have loved to see these 2 matched up in the playoffs that year.. I really think the knicks would have given them a run for the money...I sure miss the nba of those days...
That makes two of us. They split the season series 2-2, both winning at the others court. I think this Knicks squad would have given the Bulls a better run than the 93 squad.
If it wasn't for the Knicks-Heat brawl, the Knicks would have won it in 1997. I read John Stark's book, and he said that Jordan told him that he thought the Knicks could have beaten the Bulls that year. 1997 should have, as well as could have, been the year of the Knicks.
We couldn't have been watching the same Knicks/Bulls. How many times did the Knicks/Bulls games come down to the wire? That should tell you that they were very evenly matched and that the only thing that pushed the Bulls over the edge was MJ. Take Jordan off the Bulls (oh wait, that happened already) and the Bulls were a .500 team.
Actually, yes they did. In the one season Jordan was gone (1993-94), the Knicks beat the Bulls in 7 in the EC Semifinals. Though it was only one, it was the only time during the Bulls heyday in the '90s that the Knicks did beat the Bulls in the playoffs.
they could have lost. the foul called on scottie pippen was questionable. they should have lost that series too. my mistake. i meant they never beat them with jordan.
Was Scotty the one the refs called the foul on against Hubert Davis in Game 5? I will admit as a Knicks fan, that I thought that was a phantom call. It should have been the Bulls in six. Even w/o Jordan, the Knicks truly were not good enough to beat the Bulls and I am a Knicks fan.
even when they beat the bulls, they had a tough time getting by indiana and lost to houston. so jordan's was not the only nemesis they had. they couldn't beat a lot of teams or barely beat a lot of teams. i doubt they could beat seattle, phoenix, or utah if they played against them. the 94 knicks were not very talented. ewing was the only star on that team.
Look at how many Eastern Conference teams dotted that list of top 10... man its been so long before the East was THAT good; the East has been such a joke this decade
I think this was the game where Ewing was going up for a dunk at the end of the 1st half and Rodman tried to submarine him.
This was also one of the rare occasions where Patrick outshined Jordan down the stretch...he hit a 20-footer from the baseline off the glass to clinch it
I'm a Knick fan, but I have to disagree; the Knicks should have been more composed in the face of that no-talent assclown's antics. I have no doubt in my mind the Knicks would of beaten the heat if they would have just stayed on the bench when that douchebag committed that cheap shot...
Ha when? O u mean in 94 wen the only reason they got out of the second round was becuz of the worst most aggregious phantom call in NBA history? Could of only counts in childrens nursery rhymes.
I believe this game played at MSG in 97 ends in either one of two ways
If it was March 9th then the game comes down to a Ewing jumper that he made from the baseline and still kissed it off the glass to win the game. He punctuated it with a pirouette
If it was later than 3/9 then the Bulls had a slim lead and a loose ball was headed out of bounds. Scottie Pippen grabbed it diving out of bounds and called time in midair to save the game for Chicago. This led to the changing of that rule.
I remember this game. This was supposed to be Rodman's showcase to promote his wrestling deal with WCW,but Ewing's winning basket ruined it!As Ewing celebrated the basket you could see WCW head honcho Eric Bischoff with an "Aw *@%#" look on his face.
Do ya'll hear "Hypnotize" by Biggie playing in the background @ around 2:35? Same day he was murdered. Biggie's death that day and the sight of the WTC. At a loss for words...

Can you please show us the rest of this game!???? PLEASE. I mean come on, you wont show it because the Bulls lost right??? Your a Bulls fan FreshWesss right?..... Come on PLEASE show it!
they had a nba on nbc game this season, but it was msg commentators. I was excited to find out about it, but it didnt have the song or those very exciting trailers.
OMG Thank you! I remember this day like it was yesterday! I taped this segement and the game that night!...I remember this day so much. The Knicks won this game, and Patrick Ewing was AMAZING! He hit a baseline jumper to conclude matters...he also had an awesome dunk at the conclusion of the first half when he fell to the floor! You have to post the rest of this game!!..It was a classic. This was also the same day that the Notorious BIG was murdered. 3/9/97
march 9 1997 the knicks won 97-93 and despite being a knicks fan for 12 years up til that point this was the first knicks game I ever watched and we won against the world champs, it doesn't get any better than that
I don't think John Starks and Allen Houston could be Jordan-stoppers because playing with the Knicks was just too easy for Jordan. He usually went for 40+ points against the Knicks. Van Gundy's comments only would burn and motivate Jordan to play harder.

I remember this it was a night game and there were regional games that day but they were earlier.

That was just a telecast in the New York area, using MSG's normal production style.

When there was an NBC telecast of a Knicks game, the local New York station(MSG) NEVER telecasted the game.........

march 9 1997 the knicks won 97-93 and despite being a knicks fan for 12 years up til that point this was the first knicks game I ever watched and we won against the world champs, it doesn't get any better than that

rsx2: I know, I was trying to find a WTC clip from the NBA on NBC, and finally found one. Long live the memories.
kdukes865: Sorry, I don't have that game.
