I don't think John Starks and Allen Houston could be Jordan-stoppers because playing with the Knicks was just too easy for Jordan. He usually went for 40+ points against the Knicks. Van Gundy's comments only would burn and motivate Jordan to play harder.

This is so nostalgic....I still tell people that the 96-97 Knicks would've gave the Bulls a run for their money. I'm not sure they would've run the ECF but it would be a intense 7 game series. If memory serves me correct the knicks beat the bulls twice that season even the last game in Chicago that season. The Knicks that year was deep with Starks, Ward, B. Williams, Dudley, and John Wallace off the bench. 99 knicks was nice but this team was veteran savvy and deep.

The NBA on NBC had better coverage than ABC because when NBC was airing games, it had a better match-up between rival teams and NBC made the games more global too. Especially with the pro players entering the Olympics for the summer as well as the start of the WNBA.

96-97 Knicks would've beaten the Bulls that year, except PJ Brown flipped over Charlie Ward in game 5 against Miami and the Knicks choked the 3-1 lead they had over Miami.

Miami then gets swept by the Bulls, Michael has the flu game, and hello, 5th championship.

Ewing broke his wrist in 97-98 and was really never the same and neither was the team.

that was a DEEP Knicks team - think about it. Ewing, Oakley, Houston, Starks, LJ, to name a few. It was a transitional period between the Riley Knicks and the Knicks of the late 90's. It's a damn shame that fight happened against Miami because they were winning that series 3-1.

Finally the knicks are getting under the cap- they should have started to rebuild years ago by letting Ewing retire a Knick instead of trading him for cap killer Glen Rice. Good thing there's no more of this signing past prime guys to mid level money cap killing crap like under Laden and Thomas. With cap relief there's a future even if there's no Lebron. Although the Net loss looks bad this month the Knicks have played solid defense I think the future looks good they just need time.

That should tell you that they were very evenly matched and that the only thing that pushed the Bulls over the edge was MJ. Actually, yes they did. In the one season Jordan was gone (1993-94), the Knicks beat the Bulls in 7 in the EC Semifinals. Though it was only one, it was the only time during the Bulls heyday in the '90s that the Knicks did beat the Bulls in the playoffs.

even when they beat the bulls, they had a tough time getting by indiana and lost to houston. so jordan's was not the only nemesis they had. they couldn't beat a lot of teams or barely beat a lot of teams. i doubt they could beat seattle, phoenix, or utah if they played against them. the 94 knicks were not very talented. ewing was the only star on that team.

I believe this game played at MSG in 97 ends in either one of two ways

If it was March 9th then the game comes down to a Ewing jumper that he made from the baseline and still kissed it off the glass to win the game. He punctuated it with a pirouette

If it was later than 3/9 then the Bulls had a slim lead and a loose ball was headed out of bounds. Scottie Pippen grabbed it diving out of bounds and called time in midair to save the game for Chicago. This led to the changing of that rule.
