No way! It's so easy, especially when you have the full VPT (Virtual Percussion Technology) package, which comes standard and Pre-Loaded from my store!
Hey Mikey! I was just wondering, if I had BFD, could I use my electric Drumset with midi I/Os to control that software through an audio interface? just wondering! Thanks Mikey!
hey, nice videos and stuff. My band wants to record and they want me to use electric drums. I'm not a big fan of electric drums, i like playing acoustic kits. So one of the members suggested EZdrumming. I just wanna know, do i need to buy a new electronic drumkit for this? I dont think my dad would let me, i'd rather get some drum mics and play on my acoustic.
Looks like a macbook you,ve got there mikey? What Mac are you using? I am thinking of touring with a VPT kit. I have Superior DRummer 2 and a Roland kit that i really like. But i need a computer and a low latency interface.. What du you use?? Cheers from sweden/ Lenny
hey mikey.. can i put summ samples(for example the ddrum samples that r for free on the ddrum´s site) into the bfd software?i mean.. maybe the kits are great but can i create a library 2 play with external samples into the software? i would luv 2 play with the mike portnoy signature snare u.u
hi mikey :) can i play bfd without any other aplications? i mean just install the bfd that comes with the alesis trigger i/o and star to play? thank you very mucho to read .. really apreciate your work
hey mikey i just bouht the alesis trigger io i have ez drummer.. everything is cool with it.. but i cant run the bfd software that came with the interfase.. i mean.. with ez drummer dont hav problems but with the bfd i just cant find the way to use it :s please help me u.u
I had seen a few people saying the Alesis Trigger I/O couldn't do cymbal choking. Are you handling that through BFD? I'm getting ready to drop a large amount of cash, but I consider cymbal choking to be fairly important. (I play hard rock/metal.)
I'm sure they've got dealers in your area. If not, they can sell factory direct. That's how I got mine. I just emailed their sales department, and here I am making videos and recording drums at home!!!
It's hard to say. I bought the kit, an extra cymbal a whole bunch of software, and some other extras. The kit by itself is very VERY comparable to any Roland kit out there as far as price.
Just google it! Check out the Stealth kit from RET Percussion, and you should find some pricing online. Or, you could email them... that's what I did.
How much more compact is the Stealth Kit vs the FUSION PRO CX? Do you know how much floor space each Kit takes up? Is the finish on the Stealth the same as the Mirror Black for their other Kits? Thanks!
I think the CX is about 8" wider than my Stealth. To be honest, after playing the CX, it actually felt more comfortable, and really isn't too much bigger in footprint.
The Stealth is the RET Satin Black. Mirror is a high-gloss. This is more like a flat black, like that of a Stealth Fighter plane... I likey :-)
I'd probably prefer the CX model, since the footprint isn't too much bigger. I definitely like BFD and Toontrack software and own both. However I'm curious how well the RET Kits work with the Roland TD-20 module. Have you had any experience using the TD-20 with the RET Kit? Thanks!
I've worked with the TD-20's before, and they work like a charm... it's a bit excessive (expensive) for using your computer for triggering, but if you've got one, you'd be all set!
I dig your videos. Keep 'em coming. I am looking for the vid where you show what the kit sounds like acoustically (how quiet) ... was that you? If so could you post the link. Thanks!
Hi mickey, can you tell me what are the settings you are using in your alesis trigger, because i received mine today and i just tried to do some double bass (roland kd-85) and i have to kick really hard to have the sound comes out with addictive drum or ezdrummer and when i use the double pedal it's even more horrible it's like i'm using only one pedal which hit sometimes the kick pad haha.
I've organized the RET Alesis Trigger IO settings and have them saved in a file... really easy to email. Send me a private message with your email and I'll get them to you!
Dude I really dig it. Do you know any about using the Alesis trigger IO with just mesh heads on an acoustic kit and then acoustic triggers? I have not done it but I am considering doing it this month.
dude help me!i got the alesis io trigger and a ddrum sensor for the kick drum.i would like to know:if i connect those two in a normal drum kit (not e drums)do i need something else like a drum module?please help me out
Mikey, which version of BFD are you using? Are you using anything in connection with your laptop to run your BFD program? I have been told that I would need to have a separate hardrive to store the data files, but you didn't mention that in your video. Also, is BFD set up to where you can run a 6pc kit? From what I have seen it is only designed for a 5pc. Thanks
I'm using BFD 1.5 here (no external hardrive). In the second video, I believe I'm running 1.5, XFL, and Jazz&Funk with a hardrive. I'm fairly certain I could run all 3 with my laptop, but it would use a good amount of CPU, I'm sure.
BFD can be setup to do 18 kit pieces, I think. In the menu, it'll only show the 5 pcs, but you can change every kit piece to whatever you'd need.
I don't see why not. The Trigger IO was made to work with the popular ekits, and I'm sure Millenium has made their kits after the industry standards... so, yeah, I think so!
Hi Mikey estamos pensando grabar las baterias de mi banda con bfd pero estamos en la duda de que si conviene usar una bateria acustica con triggers o una electrica con pads que disparen los samples con que responde mejor bfd? I hope you speak spanish if u dont ill write u again
I'll do my best! Si tu banda usan una electrica, deberia tener menos problemas, yo creo. Si tienes efectivo para comprar la bateria, comprala. Si no, comprarias los triggers.
The samples would be the exact same, although the TD-3 has different capabilities than the Alesis IO. If you have any more questions over the BFD or even the RET kits, just let me know, friend!
BFD2 looks killer, I was saving 200 bucks to get the BFD 1.5 but now I will save a little more to get the new version. Yo, MIkey, d'ya know how much will it cost the news version and when it's gonna be released? Thanks a lot. Great vid.
BFD2 is going to pretty much rock your face off! BFD2 is set to cost $400.00, which is pretty awesome considering all of the goodies it's packed with. BUT, if you already have BFD1.5, there's an upgrade of $200.00 for BFD2, so you're not paying 600 for both versions. It's gonna be 2 months or so for its release. I've been drooling for months already, I guess I can wait a few more, huh?
Yo MIkey, you play damn good too... Maybe you should post a video with a "real" drum! I'm into death metal and I'm composing all the drum section for the very first album of my band in ProTools (using pencil) and BFD Lite (I know, I know...:/) Cant's wait to have the BFD 2 in my hand. Now I'll get more options in kits and tuning the sound. 400 bucks? It's Ok to me, I've already been saving for gear, lol... And it looks much better than DKFH.
Thanks! To be honest, I haven't used BFD Lite extensively. I know that the sounds are still BFD quality, but you don't get much from it (drum selection, bell or edge sound from cymbals). I would highly suggest picking up BFD's Jazz & Funk pack. Also, be on the lookout for BFD2! Thanks for the comment... what kind of kit are you making?!
That's officially 1,500 views for both vids! Keep it going!
Also official: I'll be on the road to Akron, Ohio to demonstrate my VPT setup in this years FutureDrum Symposium. I'll have video and pictures, for sure! I'll keep you updated as the date of the symposium is Sept. 22nd.
Jerrware, you should check out edrumming dot com It's a great forum geared towards sharing opinions, asking/answering questions, and just getting a whole lot of end-user input and information.
I DO know what you mean. That was one of the first things I looked for with this package. The hi-hats have closed, 1/4 open, 1/2 open, 3/4 open, and open. BFD also has an option for whether or not you play with the tip of the stick or the shaft (shank). It's really neat. The cymbals are among the best I've played. The hi-hat does not actually open and close like an acoustic hat.
Does the Hi-Hat sound like an Acoustic hi-hat with a variable type of sound or is it just an Open and Close? Not sure if you know what I mean, my biggest concern with eCymbals is the authentic sounds.
NOTE: I wanted to make it clear that I'm not using a dual or triple zone ride here... it's a Smartrigger crash that has a ride sample programmed. I can't trigger bell sounds from the actual bell, and I am looking into purchasing one, though. You guys are brilliant here. I love the posts!
The Alesis Trigger I/O is much more sensitive than anything else I've used or heard of. My next video will be a montage of 4 styles with different sounds, and kit pieces. One style will be rock doing more hi hat work with closed, 1/2, 3/4, and fully open. Another might be funk with a Gretch kit featuring more ride and bell sounds... heck maybe even a percussion set with cowbells, splashes, and whatever other crazy sounds I have with BFD software... I still haven't loaded it all yet!
The Alesis Trigger looks much more flexible and affordable than any Roland modules!
Do you have any videos that demonstrate the more subtle nuances of the Hi-Hat? Are you pretty satisfied that the hi-hat and cymbals are pretty close to the real thing? Thanks.
Consider it done. Like I commented before, I'll be coming out with a new video by the end of the month showing more on dynamics control, sensitivity, cool tricks and so on. Thanks for the comment!!! Do you (or anyone out there) have experience with e-drums?
I think SuddenSquall has a point about the dynamics and stuff. On the other hand, it looks like you could rip a solo without breaking a sweat. Nice chops, overall for a demo.
I pride myself on knowledge of kits and products, but I've never seen this set before. I am an acoustic drummer and have been for 20 years. What else can you do with this? I rate the video 5 of 5. I'd like to see more depth into what features you have.
Also, nice personality; not in your face, not bland.
I use BFD software myself. I'm not much of a drummer (a guitarist, actually) so I spend a lot of time in the sequencer window. I just use a midi keyboard for triggering.
Great post Squall. I've thought about ordering a ride from RET. I'll be displaying more techinical aspects (dual zone triggering, dynamics, and velocity curve.) This is only the intro to what I really want to show you...
Both vids you mention are of great quality. On the next video, you'll be able to better see and hear the 127 different velocity layers that VPT has.
Solid post Squall. Keep it up, you've gained my respect by accurately stating your thoughts.
It is decent. It lacked showing things like variable HiHat, triple-zone ride (especially bell dynamics), kick dynamics, dual-zone cymbal/drums, etc. I like the sounds as a starting point, but there seemed to be abrupt changes from low to high velocity at times. For really excellent video of edrum dynamics, check out "Chicken DFH" and "My Edrum Test Video" here on utube. Those are my favorite examples demonstrating edrum dynamics.

Hehehe... I believe I'm using my Gateway here. No Mac (although all the VPT Software is Mac compatible).
I have 3 laptops that I run:
Sony Vaio (1 gig of RAM, normal processor speed) - I use this for EZdrummer and Addictive Drums
Gateway (2 gigs of RAM) - I run BFD2 and Superior Drummer 2 here.
Alienware (3 gigs of RAM, great processing speed) - I can use anything I want on this one.
I use the PreSonus FireBox for it's outputs, but any low latency external card will work.
Thanks!

Honestly whats the best vpt software around?
loganyorkdockery 3 years ago
Hmm... what's the BEST VPT SOFTWARE?
I would go with BFD2 if you like to engineer your overall sound.
I would use Superior Drummer 2 if you need semi-mastered sounds to work with.
I would use EZdrummer if you're just looking to play and record easily.
I would use Addictive Drums if you need quick loads and great sounds.
Does that help?
Thanks for subscribing, Logan!

Hahaha... no module here, my friend. It's all software based!
As for as a trigger to MIDI interface, I'm using the Alesis Trigger IO. That's where I plug in my RET drums and cymbals.
The software I'm using in the video is BFD by FXPansion. It's got REAL drums sampled into it. You can't find those in any module on the market today.
The VPT system is the only one out there that has this real look, feel, and sounds of acoustic drums.
Modules don't have real sounds. Software does.
