If you have have disliked this video, chances are you have never mixed music or you only have experience engineering one specific genre. I don't mind if you don't care for the music, but the production is quite beautiful. You know, I hate the shit out of Kesha, but her producer busted his ass to make a dirty crackwhore sound listenable.
i came to see a mic shoot out and get this bullshit plus its the same damn guitar sound on every one of these kinda songs not to add the same fuckin yelling over it lmao how do ppl listen to this shit
Great job on the recording man, what kind of pre amp do you use? I am a fan of both the sm7 and the TLM 103 and the 103 sounds great for this vocal. Did you end up using the sm7 or 103 on the actual song?
im thinkin about gettin a sm7, just cuz the dynamic capsule should supposedly handle higher spl like screaming.. do you think i should just hold out for a tlm?
@DjScout Really, the SM7 is the way to go because its cheaper and has a SPL rating of 180db. However the TLM as a SPL rating of 138db. Ether are fine to give a comparison, a jack hammer at 1m produces about 100db.
So I didn't mean to del Celticpsalm's comment but had difficulties replying and accidently remove the comment it stated. “you can't sing and your demons can't either. You are using nice mics though."
I wish youtube would let me type more than 500 characters. :(
Take it easy on heygetalifemoron. I agree that screaming isn't very musical, and although it does take some degree of skill, that doesn't mean it sounds good. "Good music" is subjective, but I don't really understand the point of a screaming vocal when it's hard to understand the lyrics, and it's a turn off for many people compared to a regular hardcore/metal vocal. It's a nice mic, by the way, and a good performance. Im a fan of the mojave ma200 as well, similar price, great on acoustic and vox

Pretty snappy. Good job on the vox man. Great mix. Pretty cool song. Love the 103, hope to be able to afford one when I sell one of my kidneys. Virtual guitars amps and drums or miced?
@coldthrn You couldn't have gotten a better vocal either way. The 7b emphasizes that big compression, but your choice of the TLM, given your settings was a much better choice. WAY more low end and definition. I think this might be the first time I've ever voted against the 7B. But again, it could be your settings. I own both, and for any strong vox I go with the Shure. Well done regardless.
@heygetalifemoron STFU-this is what happens when something things growling and screaming correctly doesn't take skill. I want to see you do so and not getting hurt. This band kicks ass BTW (:
@2ooDamnFly ...LOL the TLM103 isnt half the Mic of many offerings at $600...Neumann has a far better TLM102...Shure KSM32 and KSM44 are also better and the top Mic under $3000 new is the AT4047...dont be so enamored by a Neumann badge...especially when its the bottom of the barrel for that brand...you are just paying for a name with that one.
Alright here is the broadest hardest to answer question. What do you feel is the most important part about recording screaming vocals like this, other than of course the screamer himself. With the vocalist for my band, its always hit and miss. We've gotten some great sounds in the past, but never constantly. How do you have such a bitchin vocal sound!?
1. Compression is essential. I compress pretty hard using different compressors. All of them doing a slight 2:1 . It adds up to about a 6:1 or 9:1 ratio depending on how many compressors I have.
2. Distance from the mic. If you look at the video and pop screen and how close he is getting it is optimal for heavy vox.
Yeah definitely. I never thought of stacking compressors like that before. What is the reason you do it? Just to obtain the different colors of all the different compressors? Where do you usually have the attack?
I always had my screamer stand far away from the mic because the first thing we ever recorded with was an i5, and that would always have some crazy low mid build-up, so even with a condenser I had him stand far away. This led to some thin vocals. I'm excited to try this out! Thanks!
Cool to hear some heavy vox through the Neumann 103. I ordered mine a couple days ago and was hoping for a good clean sound for loud vocals. Sounds great to me... Does the acoustic treatment directly behind the mic help much?
wtf

How did this match up against the SM7? I'm an SM7 man all the way, but this track sounds pretty killer.

The SM7 was a bit muffled but I forgot to take the wind guard off so it really isn't fair. One of these days Ill get the comparison up for every one.
