I hate to break it to you, but you're doing it all wrong. The carbide goes inside the cannon, and the water goes in the removable dropper. You press the button on the dropper and it puts water on the carbide, not the other way around. Had one of these when I was a kid, it will make a lot bigger bang than that...
I would have used a small grape. Don't want to plug it too much, or it might blow up. A small grape would go out quick. The wadded tape on the stick might not budge, and the cannon would blow up.
taofledermaus, you are correct in blowing through to replenish the oxygen. . My 1933 model actually expels black smoke from the barrel as I blow through it . Mine has a charger as shown in the video and with a triple charge i have achieved a flame from tha barrel. It was nice but it marred the restoration paint job.
I only use it on the 4th of July an sometimes New Years, but I love it. I remember when they were made on Conestoga Street in Bethlehem, PA
if you could be 1 meter close to it... and not having your ears ringing the smallest... well then its definately not loud (: just try hammering 0.1 gram armstrongs mix ^^

i must say this seems like a great little trick. is it possible to buy a carbide cannon like this? id love to try this out. btw what would happen if you introduced two or three clicks of the C.C. into the water basin for one firing? would that increase the amount of gas? or would it over compensate and just make it a dud shot?
We used to make carbide canon in the philippines as a kid. We actually put the cabide inside, and put a few drops of water, then light it. The canon is simple. It is nothing more than a pipe about 4 inches in diameter, and one end is sealed. There is a small hole on top about 4-5 inches from the covered end thats where you drip water and light it. It is extremely loud.(as loud as a real canon or maybe louder)
This means that for every part acetylene you create (the gas coming off of the Calcium Carbide), you need 5 parts oxygen. In other words, with air being comprised of 20% oxygen, it means that you actually need 25 parts air, 2 parts C2H2, or a 1:12.5 C2H2:Air mix. Any more or less and the results are less than spectacular.
Nicely done though. Best of luck with future firings.
I always remove my spark ignitor after each shot and blow air into it to replenish the oxygen. I just tested my cannon out with some really old Bangsite, and it was quite loud. Originally it was black, but it turned brown with age. I was surprised it still worked. The cannon Should be as loud as a firecracker.
when i was little i would play with one of these at my granma's house and shoot steal ball bearings, but i remember ligting it with a match and a 3 foot fireball would come out the muzzle.
My bad - I'm so frustrated here I got the powder color backwards ! Its good when its silvery in color - not light in color. Short shelf life - spoils with exposure to air or moisture. Keep cap on tube tight !
Also, that powder has to be stored air tight in the tube !! Half of yours is dark gray/black. It is useless unless light colored ! Even in the original tube it has a limited shelf life. Only pour ONE shot at a time. You've never heard your cannon fire properly - THUD !! LOL !
Tou wait WAY TOO long to ignite !! Do it in 3 to 5 seconsds !! Thats why you get "duds". These fire a sharp, LOUD CRACK not "thud" !!!
I just wrote same on the Howitzer vid. What makes you guys think you have to wait ? I was 10 years old in 1964 and knew how to do it right !! LOL !! Its not a science project !!
I have a modern big bang cannon with 8 wheels. The barrol is so big that i put a bottle cap in it with 2 loads of bangsite. My ears were ringing for a day!
i use to make these but out of bamboo the thick kind when i was overseas but it was dangerous so i swiched to steel tubing it was much safer and u can put more for a bigger bang
shoot paper balls, it's a lot funnier xD

you should be getting a flame from the end of the barrel...

you also don't "crunch up" the carbide, you leave it in lumps, it will last much longer that way.

2 H2C2 (g) + 5 O2 (g) --> 4 CO2 (g) + 2 H2O (g)
