WOW that's a nice bit of vintage NASA Skylab footage from the early 1970's. I like the space suits of that time with red locking thingy around the fish bowl helmets sure don't make them like that anymore.

I think that the people who say the moon landings didn't happens are used to seeing fake CGI animation that they wouldn't know real if it bit them in the ass. I think Skylab was a hastily put together mission using rockets left over from the cancelled Apollo series. The really sad thing is that they scrapped the Saturn Vs.

We could have had an Internationl Space Station back in the seventies and a manned mission to Mars in the eighties.

The cold war that got us to the moon also stopped us from going any further.

indeed it was. The Saturn was so powerful it could have put up the International space station in just 3 or 4 missions over a 6 month period at a fraction of the cost of using the ilconceived space shuttle, and it could have done it 20 years earlier had the US and USSR got together back then.

Right now only the USSR are capable of putting a humans into orbit.

SkyLab's module was originally planned for an orbit of Venus and return to Earth but it was scrubbed by a lack of funding. They used it as a space station of course.

I don't think that's quite right. There was a very preliminary study of a manned flyby of Venus with modified Apollo hardware, but it was one of many such studies for a follow-on to the lunar missions. It was never as seriously considered as an earth orbital space station.

There were actually "triple planet flybys" and they were considered pretty seriously by a group within NASA known as JAG -- Planetary Joint Action Group.

The proposal I saw would have used the spent S-IVB basically as an empty hangar, somewhat similar to the Skylab wet workshop concept. It'd probably be used as a recreational handball court. There would also be a separate, custom module for interplanetary manned flight.

It's just as well that this was never done. Robots are perfect for planetary flybys. Humans don't really shine until they land on a planet and start walking around and exploring it.

PS, i dont think the technology of the 60's and 70's both copmputer and audio/visual, would allow it to be possible to fake the moon landings. But the technology of the time was just enough to take us there for real, 400,000 people cant all tell the same lie folks!

@ferdmert Yeah, and also just watch the two documentaries "in the shadow of the moon" and "when we left earth" and you'll see some amazing footage that I doubt they could have faked in the 60s.
