On returning to this vid, I find that I cannot here it. I turn all my sound systems and speakers up as loud as possible. Still no volume comes through. Any suggestions:))?
Dang. I wish Heppner would have sung more Italian (and some French) roles earlier in his career. It really is a beautifully lyric voice buttressed by considerable power, rather than a classic heldentenor. I'd love to have heard big Ben as Manrico, Mario, Jose, Alvaro, perhaps Ernani, more of Chenier and Otello:) --
@stevevandien Something about the lack of richness, Italianate sound, bravura... there is no spark. He sounds like Melchior singing Italian repertoire: out of place or a bit bland for my taste.
Good high A....the middle voice is a little weak and uneven and not particularly beautiful....the La's sound out of place...I think it is the dreaded F
When I say "poor pianist," I don't mean bad pianist. I mean to say that I feel bad for the pianist- he needs a page turner/holder. Unfortunately though, in a recital, a page turner kind of takes some of the attention away from the performer.
Poor pianist. I'm always amazed at how well they can pull off the accompaniment, all the while wrestling with unruly music books. One of the many joys of recital performances. Nonetheless, this was absolutely gorgeous!
Wow, how did you get your hands on this? CBC documentaries are hard to come by, even in Canada! Thanks for posting...I did have this on VHS at some point, but I'm glad I found it here.
Another big barrel of lard!

Great performance. Did anyone else notice the fight the pianist has with the music at the beginning?
