  • i wonder...what about if in the middle of the concert the computer crack down like mine?????

  • @tatsareover The other computers they had there were probably back ups just for that situation. there is still a live drummer though, they could definitely carry on without the subtle electronic filters on the drums :P

  • @Copiophonica i see....i thought the drummer was a machine too.....:P

  • @tatsareover Maybe than... they (DM) have Plan B:"Singing UNPLUGGED" (for a while) with the Crowd! I guess real DM Fellows will keep this (special) moment longer in their minds than other Gigs ... who knows ?!

  • @TheAnanda9new nice one...that would be something really amazing...lets sabotage the comps then...

  • nice to see the extent to which Live can be used! I have to say I personally think the inbuilt effects are generally quite poor and wondering why they do not use something like a few waves plug ins going through ableton to enhance the drums?

  • Been to several Depeche concerts and honestly they started losing me when they started incorporating more and more acoustic elements such as live drummers and the take over of guitars just for the simple fact that I became a fan from the first album BECAUSE of the fact that they were completely electronic. To me, the soul of their music came from the arrangement of the stark electronics. They just haven't had that same magic with the last few albums. Only my opinion though, lol.

  • Whats the name of first song?? min 1:05

  • @2ElementHH "A Question of Time". You can find it on the album, Black Celebration.

  • @AbletonInc thanks so much!!!

  • CUBASE 4 + RME UFX = Audio Quality... ~ -track name of live DM execution anyone? : )

  • @theHackerOfMayhem What the hell does Cubase 4 have to do with audio quality? The UFX is sweet though :P

  • @anokah i mean both in compination,as software based instruments, work perfect and sound perfect, too. (: a friend use cubase 5 which is awesome also.Im not so familiar with vstI's btw..

  • i saw cubase there?

  • @Singleplayerbeast No, you didn't. It's Ableton Live.

  • @toddc612 on another pc

  • I was wondering he deals with latency? Even though he uses TDM or faster interfaces, the latency from digital process will remain... Is this latency perceptible at live performances?

  • @gsagula2: I think the latency would be around 5-10ms at most. depending on where in the chain ableton is sat. Pre or post Main mixer. Now think about the latency in getting the signal to the Audio Engineer out front, then back the main speaker output plus the multiple speaker delay-offsets required throughout the arena. It's not really worth thinking about when you consider that it's still faster than layers of old analog processing units.

  • I miss the old revox reel to reel that used to sit and play along in the corner of every gig... now that thing knew how to produce the depeche mode drum sound hahaha

  • what sound card you using while running ableton?

  • lip sync at 5:40 on drums?

  • honestly said, I´ve never liked Eigner´s drums, and I don´t like the way he plays, in fact, I do not like his permanent impovisation, which does not match dM´s songs, in my opinion. Wilder´s drums had/have completely different "bang" effect, still keeps me stunned when I watch Devotional. I really miss HIM in the band, sorry Eigner - you will be always in my eyes just like external worker paying by band.

  • @depeshak06 I'm sorry, but maybe you are right. Alan Wilder is amazing musician. He is amazing drummer too. The drums in Devotional is in my opinion the best sounding live drums in history. Every snare is so deep. The punch is amazing, every beat is at it's place, nothing unnecessarry.

  • I don't have time right now but can somebody count how many times this guy says 'you know'. FFS if I knew I wouldn't need to listen to you.

  • Yeah I prefer the drum machine to the live drums, A case of 'All the gear no idea"

could have saved £40,000 on tour :)

  • IMHO Depeche live performance nowadays are way better than it was on the past.

  • To be honest the older DM songs up to the Ultra album just don't sound right at all with a real drummer.

  • DM with live drumms-sucks/ it was fantastic, only when the fantastic man did this in the right DMway -it was Alan!

  • DM/ableton/logic - great!

  • There is no reason for this! Just use someone with a sampler or a real electronic drum kit with the sounds plugged in! Making an acoustic drum kit sound electronic is just backwards!

  • @xxxDavidMaysxxx

What are you on about??? Firstly, Ableton allows the stack of virtually ANY plugins. A sampler can't unless you want a huge rig that is not great for touring with. You can pretty much add anything into it. Built in fx are not enough most of the time.

Electronic kits are great, yes - but they are not as flexible. if you stick midi triggers on your kit you'll have the best of both electronic and acoustic kits in one. Less to tour with again.

  • @TVisHELL CALM DOWN!!!! Lol I diddn't think about the midi triggers in drums. It just seemed silly at first glance because it was like trying to make an electric guitar sound like those sickly sounding sampled ones on crappy casio keyboards.... But I see now.

  • Ableton live is just a souped up version of Sonic Foundry Acid...

  • @BLACKCARGORECORDS

Hmmmm. I completely disagree with you there.

  • drumming-wise , christian is much more talented than alan.. that's obvious.. but that is not the point.. i don't think that any devotee would prefer christian's hard rock-like drumming to alan's simple but powerful drumming.. that's what DM has been lacking since 1995.. alan was drumming fantastic but he was also great on choosing the songs on which he drums.. that's what DM is lacking.. cmon.. drums on everything counts or world in my eyes.. give me a break

  • when alan was still around he singlehandedly took care of the matters that this guy's demonstrating in this video...

  • Sorry, doesn't sound that great...

  • Most people moan about Christian's drumming and Alan missing without realising that if Alan was still in DM he would use an acoustic drummer instead of a backing track. And he also used Ableton on his Recoil tour.

    ;)

  • Christian zertrommelt die ganzen Songs. I dont want to hear him any longer!

  • The Drum Processing with Ableton is not a good Solution for a Band...like Mode.Remember..Mode is a Electronic Music Band...so why should a natural Drum Sound from Eigner Sounds better than the original Analogue drums? This is always B....... !Eigner drums like he must lost his life after the show.No chance to hear the real Depeche Mode sounds and feelings from the Studio Tracks. Please replace Eigner and the Ableton Drum Processing.Remember Düsseldorf `10, that sounds very crappy.

  • Stupid question...

What was the make of the camera that shot this footage?

    thanks!

  • Depeche Mode are still GOOD!!! whats with some people here??? you rather go listen to someone boring like Coldplay??

  • this is a bunch of shit--

    fuck depeche mode--

they go out side the band to program now--

    depeche mode sucks now

    get Alan Wilder back

    and fuck Ableton too

    bunch of goddamn laptop jockeys

Ableton makes everything sound the same

  • @liverawkstar ableton is not only for laptop djs. alot of live musicians use it to give more sound to their music. i dont know what music u listen to, to make the assumption that ableton makes "everything sound the same".

  • "We didn't want to use samples"....ugh what happened to the Depeche of old? Bring back Alan.

  • @jrock714

you´re damn right. BRING BACK ALAN. Thats the way it has to be!

  • you know^^

  • KCLMNOP was here watching this vidéo home boy, the drummer was a serious drummer

  • So even though they started using a drummer back in 1997, ok yes Alan did drum a bit before then, they are still using drum machines/samples/programs. The problem is that certain songs of theirs don't sound as good with real drums such as a Photographic and It's Not Good, but anyway it is great to hear Kerry and how he works to keep them sounded good

  • great job!!!!

    but

    how is with latency?

is possible to use this setup whithout protools hd engine?

with some other chiper audio card, soo you can send it youre procesed sound on monoitor to drummer whithout big latency?

  • awesomeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

  • My bum hurts.

  • Really cool stuff and bring credibility for the tool, but my opnion is always when we perform a record live or in studio a a real hardware like synths or drums need appear!!!

  • can you tell us about the hardware needed for such use i guess latency makes it impossible on home studio equipement

  • @saberch m audio fast track men

  • why would you use this on your home studio?? use samples its easier..I bet they dont use this technique in the studio they use real cymbals & drum machines.. this is for giving a real feeling to the performance

  • very clever stuff, i saw them in glasgow secc in dec '09 and christian is an amazing drummer.

  • I dont beleive a word of this!

the whole concept doesnt make sense, using triggers would be the way to go.

first of all his kit is not tuned right,2nd the whole meat and potato drumming doesnt fit

the style of the band at all...hes a great drummer though...

    ableton commercial?

  • As drummer who plays live AND owns a copy of Ableton Live 7.0.16 I have to say I am some what impressed with this video! I really did not think to combine 'live' drums with Ableton to create real time EFX and Gates etc through software... i will have to give it go...!!??

  • lol high end liga muhahahaha nice 1

  • evilsnakes1 you are a jackass and a fucking fool

  • Intreresting info

I never thought that drummers combine real drums with real-time software effects

  • I was the pilot that carried all the Depeche Mode gear for the 6 shows of the South American portion of the Tour of The Universe. I met Kerry and spent some time talking to him. Very nice, genuine and humble fellow. I spent lots of time talking with Christian Eigner as well, he is a great drummer and very nice person. We talked a lot about drumming and his own music since I am also a drummer. Good peoples.

  • depeche mode should go back to using a drum machine in their songs. I think they very rarely used them live though, even back in the early days (they used to use a recording of them played on a reel to reel)

  • Are there special microphones that are used? I suppose you would need very close proximity microphones so the toms wouldn't bleed into the adjacent microphones and false trigger.

  • @56BelAirDenver I think they can solve that easily with the noise gates.

  • The name of the first song is "A Matter of Time" I'm pretty sure.

"It's just a matter a time...before they get their hands on you...".

  • The title of that song is " A Question of Time" not " A Matter of Time"! lol

  • ahahah...a matter of time....ahahah...

  • why cant they go back to a Reel-To-Reel machine?im not giving out about Christian but the Mode were a far better as an electronic band

  • what's the name of the first song¿?

  • What camera was this shot with? The Image is so very nice!

  • Does ANyone know how the routing is being done?

HOw the signal gets from the drum mics to the Soundcard/laptop with live?

  • They will have a stage box splitter, which sends one block of channels to the monitor mixer and the other block to whatever soundcard they're using for the computer...

  • This is fasinating. I I stood about 15 feet away from Kerry at the terminal C Airtran station in Newark airport, and would have said something to him about the drum mixing, if I had known who he was. I knew he was someone, since he looked at me while I was holding the Tour of the Universe black tote bag. I could have congratulated him on his excellent work at the concerts. I'll do it here. Excellent drum engineering on the Depeche Mode TOTU shows!!

  • GREAT WORK!!!

    excellent!!!!!

  • cool great stuff

  • what i/o boxes do you use

  • The live drummer makes them sound mediocre. The sounds are very boring. Now they just sound like an aging rock band.

  • good quality :O

  • I wonder if the mode are still using Sherman Filterbanks on their drum processing, or if they managed to replicate the effect in Live.

Either way, I have a Filterbank that allegedly was owned and used by them on a tour...

  • Comment removed

  • Now I know why the drums sounds so much better on this tour :) Been there in Berlin, Frankfurt and Bratislava ! :) See you in Łodź!!!!!

  • in fairness the mode shouldnt have a live drummer.they should go back to tape

  • what a job to do mate.

    thanks for sharing

  • Great stuff! Thanx!!!

  • Great vid, cheers Kerry!

  • Si vous regardez attentivement la video, à 0:25, on peut voir une liste de fichiers sur l'ordi pour chaque chanson. On peut lire "perfect" ce qui signifie que DM la jouera prochainement !

  • what audio interface are you using

is it pci express card or firewire conected

and what computer are you using

and what is the speed of the computer?

  • I think this Kerry guy worked on Ultra too.

  • yes he did

  • Comment removed

  • I'd like to do some stuff in real time. Guitars and vocals etc. Any chance of a demo video on that topic?

  • So these drums are being processed in real time?

  • yes

  • name of song Question of Time

  • great Ableton Live!

    love it!

  • what about latency?

  • very interesting, the technics... going more more forward

and yes, who could think of a pc in such a enviroment? you need this and this driver, please connect to the microsoft webpage for help (5 minutes before the concert...) lol

  • name of the song please...

  • MAC 100%

  • wow

  • Great vid. Love ableton!!!

  • look at all them programs at the bottom of there monitor!

  • yeh ...thats a lot of progs...i wonder if its mac or pc ?

  • its all mac

  • it's a mac dock...

  • When he says "desk" he means a mixing board...

  • yes, im sure of it...

  • great video!

  • What is he referring to when using the term "desk"?

  • Thats something you shag the secretary on

  • Great video... I'm a long time Live user, on and off stage has always been a very reliable software for me.

  • interesting!!!

  • very very very interesting video!

A big finger for those who dispute Live!

  • Live is the best music program !!! Thanks for it :D

    Greetings from Poland !

  • this is awesome. now that's thinking out of the box.

  • its actually thinking IN the box :) lol
