@tatsareover The other computers they had there were probably back ups just for that situation. there is still a live drummer though, they could definitely carry on without the subtle electronic filters on the drums :P
@tatsareover Maybe than... they (DM) have Plan B:"Singing UNPLUGGED" (for a while) with the Crowd! I guess real DM Fellows will keep this (special) moment longer in their minds than other Gigs ... who knows ?!
nice to see the extent to which Live can be used! I have to say I personally think the inbuilt effects are generally quite poor and wondering why they do not use something like a few waves plug ins going through ableton to enhance the drums?
Been to several Depeche concerts and honestly they started losing me when they started incorporating more and more acoustic elements such as live drummers and the take over of guitars just for the simple fact that I became a fan from the first album BECAUSE of the fact that they were completely electronic. To me, the soul of their music came from the arrangement of the stark electronics. They just haven't had that same magic with the last few albums. Only my opinion though, lol.
@anokah i mean both in compination,as software based instruments, work perfect and sound perfect, too. (: a friend use cubase 5 which is awesome also.Im not so familiar with vstI's btw..
I was wondering he deals with latency? Even though he uses TDM or faster interfaces, the latency from digital process will remain... Is this latency perceptible at live performances?
@gsagula2: I think the latency would be around 5-10ms at most. depending on where in the chain ableton is sat. Pre or post Main mixer. Now think about the latency in getting the signal to the Audio Engineer out front, then back the main speaker output plus the multiple speaker delay-offsets required throughout the arena. It's not really worth thinking about when you consider that it's still faster than layers of old analog processing units.
I miss the old revox reel to reel that used to sit and play along in the corner of every gig... now that thing knew how to produce the depeche mode drum sound hahaha
honestly said, I´ve never liked Eigner´s drums, and I don´t like the way he plays, in fact, I do not like his permanent impovisation, which does not match dM´s songs, in my opinion. Wilder´s drums had/have completely different "bang" effect, still keeps me stunned when I watch Devotional. I really miss HIM in the band, sorry Eigner - you will be always in my eyes just like external worker paying by band.
@depeshak06 I'm sorry, but maybe you are right. Alan Wilder is amazing musician. He is amazing drummer too. The drums in Devotional is in my opinion the best sounding live drums in history. Every snare is so deep. The punch is amazing, every beat is at it's place, nothing unnecessarry.
There is no reason for this! Just use someone with a sampler or a real electronic drum kit with the sounds plugged in! Making an acoustic drum kit sound electronic is just backwards!
What are you on about??? Firstly, Ableton allows the stack of virtually ANY plugins. A sampler can't unless you want a huge rig that is not great for touring with. You can pretty much add anything into it. Built in fx are not enough most of the time.
Electronic kits are great, yes - but they are not as flexible. if you stick midi triggers on your kit you'll have the best of both electronic and acoustic kits in one. Less to tour with again.
@TVisHELL CALM DOWN!!!! Lol I diddn't think about the midi triggers in drums. It just seemed silly at first glance because it was like trying to make an electric guitar sound like those sickly sounding sampled ones on crappy casio keyboards.... But I see now.
drumming-wise , christian is much more talented than alan.. that's obvious.. but that is not the point.. i don't think that any devotee would prefer christian's hard rock-like drumming to alan's simple but powerful drumming.. that's what DM has been lacking since 1995.. alan was drumming fantastic but he was also great on choosing the songs on which he drums.. that's what DM is lacking.. cmon.. drums on everything counts or world in my eyes.. give me a break
Most people moan about Christian's drumming and Alan missing without realising that if Alan was still in DM he would use an acoustic drummer instead of a backing track. And he also used Ableton on his Recoil tour.
The Drum Processing with Ableton is not a good Solution for a Band...like Mode.Remember..Mode is a Electronic Music Band...so why should a natural Drum Sound from Eigner Sounds better than the original Analogue drums? This is always B....... !Eigner drums like he must lost his life after the show.No chance to hear the real Depeche Mode sounds and feelings from the Studio Tracks. Please replace Eigner and the Ableton Drum Processing.Remember Düsseldorf `10, that sounds very crappy.
@liverawkstar ableton is not only for laptop djs. alot of live musicians use it to give more sound to their music. i dont know what music u listen to, to make the assumption that ableton makes "everything sound the same".
So even though they started using a drummer back in 1997, ok yes Alan did drum a bit before then, they are still using drum machines/samples/programs. The problem is that certain songs of theirs don't sound as good with real drums such as a Photographic and It's Not Good, but anyway it is great to hear Kerry and how he works to keep them sounded good
Really cool stuff and bring credibility for the tool, but my opnion is always when we perform a record live or in studio a a real hardware like synths or drums need appear!!!
why would you use this on your home studio?? use samples its easier..I bet they dont use this technique in the studio they use real cymbals & drum machines.. this is for giving a real feeling to the performance
As drummer who plays live AND owns a copy of Ableton Live 7.0.16 I have to say I am some what impressed with this video! I really did not think to combine 'live' drums with Ableton to create real time EFX and Gates etc through software... i will have to give it go...!!??
I was the pilot that carried all the Depeche Mode gear for the 6 shows of the South American portion of the Tour of The Universe. I met Kerry and spent some time talking to him. Very nice, genuine and humble fellow. I spent lots of time talking with Christian Eigner as well, he is a great drummer and very nice person. We talked a lot about drumming and his own music since I am also a drummer. Good peoples.
depeche mode should go back to using a drum machine in their songs. I think they very rarely used them live though, even back in the early days (they used to use a recording of them played on a reel to reel)
Are there special microphones that are used? I suppose you would need very close proximity microphones so the toms wouldn't bleed into the adjacent microphones and false trigger.
They will have a stage box splitter, which sends one block of channels to the monitor mixer and the other block to whatever soundcard they're using for the computer...
