    R.I.P. Woody Shaw.

Just ANOTHER master musician I DIDN'T GET TO SEE PERFORM LIVE.

WHY?!? Why do they pass away before I get a chance to .... dammit

  • I listened to Woody Shaw Quintet play this live in Kolkata India in 1983. It was great. I searched for this because of nostalgia. The lineup at Kolkata was : Woody Shaw

Kirk Lightsey, Steve Turre, Stafford James, and Ronnie Burrage.

  • pretty much just shit myself @ 2:57

  • Ha who the hell didn't like this video?

  • Carter Jefferson is my hero and was my friend. Glad that this recording exist. Miss you bro!

  • @keybobrob Haha you were so bothered you checked out my videos? Some life you got.

  • @keybobrob Waaaaaa. Someone get him a Crydol.

  • The tempo's gone berserk!!!

  • Nice...thanks for posting this

  • Picked up on Woody Shaw after listening to an album "Black Renaissance", where he plays with Hary Whitaker (piano), Azar Lawrence (sax) and others, if anyone out there have not heard that album yet - it is a must, and probably one of Woody Shaw's most spectacular (non classic jazz) performances You got to love this man! Thank you Woody!!

  • HaHa I can totaly play this song...At 1/100 of the speed.

  • TOP SHELF

  • And I forgot to say that Woody has killer rythm section....!!!

  • word

  • This has got to be one of the greatest bands in the history of jazz. Dayum, that Carter Jefferson only made one album, not nearly enough!!!

  • thanks for taking me back in the day. one of the best

  • man thanks for posting this.

  • What a group! And what a loss for the music world...

Woody Shaw still is my trumpet heroe!

Thank you so much for this clip!

  • my man carter jefferson

  • I never get tired of listening to these guys; masters of "spaz jazz".

I lost track of how many licks I've stolen from Woody...

  • damn this is probably easiest the most killing trumpet solo on youtube.

  • Majestuoso.

  • Rest in peace Carter Jefferson. You left us too soon. And Woody so many wonderful nights hanging with and listening to you. You are the baddest!

  • What a tempo! Always glad to hear Woody Shaw, Carter Jefferson & Ronnie Matthews.

  • The only guys I've heard who come close to Woody are Freddie Hubbard and Theodore "Fats" Navarro. That's just my opinion. Woody is still my all-time favorite...the king of wide intervals.

  • @Modes9 Not Clifford? Clifford was a beast! Dead at 26...he was Fats to the second power! While Woody just took Freddie's style and went off the freaking rails with it!!!!

  • It's good to have these comments: they all know what a great musician this trumpeter was!

    Woody lives!

  • Woody Shaw stays on the top forever as a pure genius.

  • Another Planet...

  • Yes, Woody Shaw = innovator . I was fortunate to get to see this group when they came to Munich Germany in 1979 and played at a club called thte Domicile. This still sounds as fresh as ever. Thanks for posting it!

  • Interesting, i too saw Woody Shaw at the Domicile. I believe it was the year before, though. Small world, this Internet.

    JPW

  • It may have been 1978 when I saw him, so we may have possibly seen the same gig. Small world indeed...

  • Carter Jefferson! God Damn!

  • Ha Ha......It is like listening to another Coltrane!!

  • wynton marsalis is a joke, period.

  • I heard this band live shortly before this footage was shot. Woody was so great. Such a tragic ending. So sad. For all the accolades that Wynton Marsalis receives nowadays, I hope that he, himself, realizes his debt to Woods. Wynton is the disciple. Woody is the master.

  • I have the audio of this set from KJAZ radio--the correct year is 1979 :)

  • outstanding group. jefferson is one of woody's type sideme.n

  • im still waiting on some woody shaw dvd to be released.

  • Holly smoke!!

  • Woody Shaw, trumpet

    Carter Jefferson, sax

    Ronnie Mathews, piano

    Stafford James, bass

    Victor Leiws, drums
