your leaving one thing out , northern states had slaves , the slaves had no choice but to work under federal rule ! the southern slaves that were on plantations took care of the white folks also and each other many southern slaves fought along side confederate troops and plantation owners , the yankees raped, burned and stole things from the plantations in the south . learn your history on your own NOT in the lies of federal school books !

From a Foreigners point of view, The Civil War was a necessary conflict. I don't think it was purely about slavery, about it was obviously a factor. I reckon it was just two different kinds of Americans fighting over cultural differences.
(I'm going to regret entering this debate.) Granted, the North wasn't hard-intent on abolishing slavery. But if slavery wasn't an issue, there would have been no war. Slavery had been the biggest divisive issue of the early 19th century. After 'Bleeding Kansas,' John Brown's raid, & wild, false rumors of Northern-backed slave revolts, many southerners believed that all Yankees wanted to free the slaves through violence. The plantation owners had the votes that counted, & they voted to secede.
@E2theSamps Your take on the Civil War was very interesting.
I'm a history nut so I thought I'd add my $0.02.
The average Confederate Soldier joined to defend his home. The average Union soldier joined to keep the nation form splitting up. If you had told either of them that they were fighting over slaves, they would have gone home.
I'm not saying that slavery wasn't an issue, it just wasn't the primary cause.
When the north won, they wrote the history books, hence political correctness.
@SamuelDMorgan This a free country and the people who write the history books are: the people who write the history books. They are not "written by the north" they are by whomever from whatever state, or country, they hail from. The documantation that is present and archived from the period is amazing and all arguments must come from it.
@E2theSamps Your comment is narrow minded as is anyone who argues the same case. For your statement to hold weight you must first assume that all the movers and shakers of the secession movement had no foresight. Slavery was one issue in the power struggle between state and federal government. If the federal could start to dictate policy to the states regarding slavery, what would come next? That was the issue, and we now live in a country where the federal government hold too much sway.
@E2theSamps the South had a static agrarian society that was dependent on cotton, and slaves. Take away the slave, you demolish that society. The South was aware that the North was growing in terms of population, industry and westward expansion.
Rather than be a part of a Union that seemed bent on disrupting/destroying their society, they felt it was better to just get out.
@TheRickIRL Yeah, and all that came down to SLAVERY! The csa wanted slavery which is what their economy revolved around and if it was ebolished it would effect their way of life. Just like a changing economy does. And do you really think a bloody war like the civil war would be fought over something as simple as "ways of life." In a sense we are both right.
The north never objected to slavery not even the president. He didnt want or regard a black man to the same status he had as a white man.
The war didnt start over slaves. Both sides didnt care about it. It started over rights.Slaves never were human beeings to the north they were contrabands .

@jberry1982 lol, you hicks were doomed from the start, now get out of your shacks and see that the world isn't your own fantasy, we have a black president bitch!
Then There would still be a Confederate States Today if the Artillery Commander knew there was a large dip at the top of the hill where their main objective was that would have definitly have delivered a solid Confederate Victory just like Fredricksburg then there would have been a clear road to Washington especially with the entire Union Army Destroyed Then the letter of surrender terms written by Jefferson Davis himself for General lee to hand to Lincoln to be signed. That wud've been Great..
I wish somebody could foot the expense of some realistic pyrotechnics at an event. It would be awesome if spectators could get a feel for the effect artillery has downrange. There was an event in Weatherford, Texas (reenacting Corinth) a few years back put on by the 1st US and the 9th Texas that really put it out there ... expansive earthworks, unbelievable pyro, and two of the most authentic units in the hobby!
That must've really sucked. I went to this one a while back and really enjoyed it. This event inspired me to start reenacting and Now this year I'm going to be going to second Gettysburg event, but this time I'll be participating =)
@pharoah246 Glad to have you in the hobby. In a way, I'm glad I didn't go cuz one of the guys that did go who I knew had a heart attack, worrying about him woulda ruined it for me anyhow :(

Is there a book or books that definitively state that the Yankees sent out skirmishers against the seemingly endless tide of Confederates at Pickett's Charge?
see those boys in red in the artillery for the union? those are Cushings battery. they are the drunkest artillery unit on the field at all times. Reynolds battery L was on the left side of them :)
I love how many reenactors think that when you are artillery you HAVE to have either all or a combination of the following to be artillery, gators, red hat cord, lots of red trim either an entirely red kepi or a black slouch at, a solid red shirt, and at least 3 women amongst the ranks.....its disgusting!
I remember sitting on the field with my fellow reenactors, the cannonade was pretty cool for the first few minutes, but then we all got bored. But I tell you, the battle was one hell of a grand finale!
That was my battalion that went and torched the house in this scenario. You won't believe the intense heat it put out in such a short time, and I'm also a firefighter, it was intense, very quick! -8th Ohio Volunteer Infantry

I agree; very few of the soldiers on either side had a vested interest in slavery. Most enlisted out of a sense of patriotism.
But the people who voted to secede (i.e. the plantation owners) cared very much about slavery.
