the trick is to pose the folded "popup" items between the pages while they are opened and then glue them in place so that when you close the pages they fold in on themselves.

what material did you use for the man and machine one, and how thick was it?

I used mat board, chipboard, paper, rods, string. It's about 2in thick when closed.
