@jawuan101 hey hey hey hey please think that over. i dont know what youre smoking. but Miles Davis is the king of "trumpet jazz". than i would have to give it to clifford brown and chet baker. but than theres also louis armstrong. man you should look these trumpet players up before you make such a comment
@BRUHDAMAN umm well clifford brown, miles david and chet are from the same era. and EVERY musician has a different style of what ever theyre playing. but Wynton Marsalis plays more traditional jazz, meaning, ,mostly jazz before 1965. thats what he likes, he sometimes plays contemporary stuff, but he oves his traditional. that being said. he played in the same style that Miles did before he did fusion. Miles Davis, is obviously one of a kind. He's sound was unique and different. But it was jazz
@BRUHDAMAN Chopin and Liszt both played during the romanic era. Same "style" but different feeling, because its a different person. That doesn't mean you can't compare one with the other. Obviously Marsalis' interpretation is different from James', is it possibly that he want's it less 'musical'? this composition for me is the prime example of a piece that is only played to show off someone's technique, which has to be amazin to be able to play this. So whenever i listen to this, i don't see it as real music.
This version being the exception. Somehow this is more music than technique.

@jrvanderveen --- I know more about this guy than I find appropriate to discuss here. He's "parlayed" his marginal soul and blistering technique into a career "politician" for the rich people at PBS (Public Broadcasting) here in New York, and has become the "safe" ethnic voice for "jazz" at Carnegie Hall. . The "Bumblebee" chart was interpreted incorrectly to begin with, so from point "A" I question his musicality. The chart speciifies "Vivace", not il più velocemente possibile".
@Witch1993 To begin with, "Flight" wasn't written for trumpet.. Read any transcription, and you will NEVER see "Play as fast funeral march --- DO NOT SWING". The piece is the musical interpretation of a bumble bee in flight, that doesn't sound like it calls for a dull, robotic interpretation.
@RocknRollkat Perhaps you should listen to Wynton play Flight of Bumblebee on Sesame Street. It did sound like a bee in flight there. It's on YouTube. It's an episode where he and Hoots are explaining notes.
@GAshoneybear --- I don't have the time or desire to track down a 'better' performance of the piece. I know the chart, it does not say "Play like you're ass is on fire". Interpretation of a chart is of fundamental importance. For someone who claims to be a classically trained musician, he doesn't show me much. He is a politician, and PBS has made him a society child. His commentary on the PBS Jazz "documentary" was a joke among real jazz players.
@RocknRollkat It's not that serious. I don't have an issue with you not liking him, a lot of people feel he's overrated, but why waste your time on his videos to convince people who worship his chops and Monette that he can't play? You've wasted more time on here replying than if you had looked up a video you wanted to watch.
@freetrader0000 <------ and why can't you stop using such an insulting phrase?!?! You're obviously no better than the guy you're insulting. Grow up and think about what you're saying before you say it!
@coolio3163 That's partially true. Why would I spend time listening to guys who hang around Lincoln Center promoting 'safe' music to nervous boojies when I could be downtown with the real heavyweights ??
I always get nervous when jazz musicians put on tuxes.
Like I said, the guy's a tremendous technician, but so is my computer.
@RocknRollkat He plays mostly jazz. He barely has most of his work on computers. 90% of it is live. Watch a few videos like "Happy birthday - Wynton marsalis". He does solos on that, and you should watch one of the like 500 jazz concerts that are on YouTube.
@RocknRollkat YO your effn rock...lol i said the exact SAME thing Wynton can't swing for jack he's not melodic, is phrasing isn't good personal opinion and his vocabulary isn't there take it from a musician like Nicholas Payton even tho there two TOTALLY different genres Wynton tries to do it all but he can't
@ladytrumpet010 He knows which side of the bread the butter's on. He's "PBS Safe", the darling of NYC's upper krust (sic). He's got the fame, the recognition from the "correct" people, but no soul. That's the price you pay. All others pay cash, wait on line and listen to Miles.
If you're suggesting that one should listen to Davis over Marsalis, well, that's simply a matter of preference. You see, back when Marsalis was an emerging trumpet soloist, he and Davis didn't see eye to eye when it came to music. Davis preferred bebop and fusion, whereas Marsalis favored the old fashioned style. So to say that Davis is better than Marsalis isn't fair; they played two different styles.
@Witch1993 Old fashioned style ? Which one ? Music dates well into prehistory. I'm not suggesting who's "better", I agree with Miles' comments to Bryant Gumbel on "best", etc.
but can he do it backwards?

Wynton Marsalis is the "King of Classical Trumpet", because he has the highest technical capabilities to play the trumpet at super fast tempos, with absolute clarity.
He also can sustain a note indefinitely by circular breathing, without puffing his cheeks, by storing enough air underneath his tongue, with total accuracy in a solo performance, such as Perpetual Motual on the trumpet, that was originally written for violin solo with orchestra.

Yeah, great, blah blah blah, but can Wynnie make ONE note swing ??
Computers can do this too, but they can't swing.
This isn't music, gang, it's technique with no soul.

@RocknRollkat if you don't think wynton marsalis is a superior musician, you are obviously musically ignorant.

@tptguitar5280 Yeah, good to know. You don't know me, and you think you can judge me and my musicianship by one comment I made ? Now what's obvious ?

@RocknRollkat This is obviously probably the only video you have seen of wynton.
coolio3163 1 year ago
@coolio3163 That's partially true. Why would I spend time listening to guys who hang around Lincoln Center promoting 'safe' music to nervous boojies when I could be downtown with the real heavyweights ??
I always get nervous when jazz musicians put on tuxes.
Like I said, the guy's a tremendous technician, but so is my computer.
RocknRollkat 1 year ago
@RocknRollkat He plays mostly jazz. He barely has most of his work on computers. 90% of it is live. Watch a few videos like "Happy birthday - Wynton marsalis". He does solos on that, and you should watch one of the like 500 jazz concerts that are on YouTube.

@RocknRollkat YO your effn rock...lol i said the exact SAME thing Wynton can't swing for jack he's not melodic, is phrasing isn't good personal opinion and his vocabulary isn't there take it from a musician like Nicholas Payton even tho there two TOTALLY different genres Wynton tries to do it all but he can't
ladytrumpet010 1 year ago
@ladytrumpet010 He knows which side of the bread the butter's on. He's "PBS Safe", the darling of NYC's upper krust (sic). He's got the fame, the recognition from the "correct" people, but no soul. That's the price you pay. All others pay cash, wait on line and listen to Miles.

@RocknRollkat
Witch1993 1 year ago
@Witch1993 Old fashioned style ? Which one ? Music dates well into prehistory. I'm not suggesting who's "better", I agree with Miles' comments to Bryant Gumbel on "best", etc.
