  • but can he do it backwards?

  • pisssss

  • Yes Wynton is bad ass

  • what a magnificent trumpet player....not just anyone can make a trumpet sound like this....wynton is a one of a kind....

  • I now have a goal.

  • WOW!!! Amazing!!!

  • @Stompajiggayo You're a hateful ignorant son of a bitch!

  • @mrfester42 Why,thank you! Happy Thanksgiving! :D

  • @Stompajiggayo If you're going to be a hateful idiot at least try to be funny or original. The same sad comments from youtube trolls are pathetic. Stop embarrassing yourself.

  • @letsblowthisparty I'm not embarrased,negro.

  • @Stompajiggayo sigh.

  • ive actually met him, and he is one of the most chill and down to earth people ive ever met. i was genuinely surprised that someone so great and famous could maintain the level of respect and humility he does.

  • Will anyone hate me if I like Harry James' version better?

  • Trumpet players are cocky...Even the ones that suck are cocky...this guy would probably have everyone around him crying

  • @agasteiger What an odd stereotype. And Wynton is not cocky in the least. He is one the sweetest most humble people I've had the chance to meet.

  • Anche se impiegassi cent'anni non riuscirei mai a diventare bravo quanto lui! bravo...fantastico... indescrivibile..

  • he makes me look bad

  • lucky wife...

  • Did I just listen to God on a trumpet?

  • @ColdRider112 yes

  • 8 bees couldn't fly as fast as Wynton Marsalis' fingers

  • Ok, which Russian composer wrote this and for which instrument(s)

  • @cavalierfan2008 Rimsky Korsakov, violin.

  • wow, i like this one better than Serguei Nakariakov's version... 5 out of five that was fast and beautiful.

  • I guess the 8 people who disliked this would rather listen to one of those "pretenders", like lady gaga lol :)

  • man this is awesome.

  • I just saw him live ^_^

  • he must be on speed to play that fast

  • impressive

  • Fuegooo!!!!!! jajajajaja

  • circular breathing + triple tonguing + extremely fast fingers

  • @13neirad + magic

  • @EpicPhalure equals Wynton playing flight of the bumblebee

  • Comment removed

  • @13neirad Well actually no triple tonguing in this piece, and I don't think Wynton circular breathes in this (although Nakariakov does, and takes very few breaks) :P

  • @nikvalinsky your right, hes playing fast enough for normal breaths O.O

  • Hey Wyton, can you do the Flight of the Bumble Bee On a Pocket Trumpet. As done by the Late AL-Hurt.

  • Hey Wynton, I would love to hear you do the bumble bee on a Pocket Trumpet. or any thing you would like to play.

  • Hey Wynton, This is Alfred in New Orleans I would love to hear you do the bumble bee on a Pocket Trumpet. or any thing you would like to play.

  • Holy cow

  • his tongue can bench more then I can

  • one of the most beautiful thins ever played

  • Prestissimo much?!

  • Wow!

  • @MCalixte89 What about Maynard Ferguson? Doc Severinsen? Jon Faddis? Dizzy Gillespie? Arturo Sandoval? What about them? They were also great jazz musicians. I don't think its fair to say that anyone of them is better then any other.

P.S. Try not to use than in place of then it gets annoying. Thank You.

P.S.S Bill Chase? Herb Albert? Adam Rapa? Well, he's more modern than the rest of them. Disregard Adam Rapa

  • i still can't believe i got to trade choruses with this guy at Lincoln center

  • best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • someone tell me if he's doing circular breathing

it sounds sorta like it but sometimes it sounds like he's not

  • @Davusren probably doin both

  • @Davusren he might be playing it fast enough tht he doesnt have to. Playing the song slower would require circular breathing

  • 600th like :), very good playing.

  • He is almost as good as me

  • omfg this is amazing the king of trumpet jazz

  • @jawuan101 hey hey hey hey please think that over. i dont know what youre smoking. but Miles Davis is the king of "trumpet jazz". than i would have to give it to clifford brown and chet baker. but than theres also louis armstrong. man you should look these trumpet players up before you make such a comment

  • @MCalixte89 he is good i like him i play his muisc and better the him but hes good

  • @MCalixte89 different styles of jazz... wow don't you see they are all great but basically different styles and era.

  • @BRUHDAMAN umm well clifford brown, miles david and chet are from the same era. and EVERY musician has a different style of what ever theyre playing. but Wynton Marsalis plays more traditional jazz, meaning, ,mostly jazz before 1965. thats what he likes, he sometimes plays contemporary stuff, but he oves his traditional. that being said. he played in the same style that Miles did before he did fusion. Miles Davis, is obviously one of a kind. He's sound was unique and different. But it was jazz

  • @BRUHDAMAN Chopin and Liszt both played during the romanic era. Same "style" but different feeling, because its a different person. That doesn't mean you can't compare one with the other. Liking one more than the other is a matter of opinion. But it is a fact that Miles Davis is the "King of the Trumpet"

  • Help i can't tip the valves so fast!! Its amazing and incredible , but i try and try and try .... 50 Years later i Hope i Play the humblebee ;0)

  • Best technique I've ever heard on trumpet, with that sound, smooth, Wynton is ridiculous,

  • LOL... funny how perfection always makes haters get bitter. The fact that Wynton is technically perfect does not mean that he is not musical. If anything, the fact that his technique is so sound gives him such musical freedom its hard not to hear it... unless you're tone-deaf, or worse... hopelessly prejudiced.

  • I've always wanted to learn to play this... I've just never been sure I could hit the valves fast enough...

  • @EuropeYear1917 I feel the same way lol

  • @Jacquannabarrett

I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels that way

  • Oooweee!!! Yall remember DRUMLINE when the band played bumblebee. Remember with NICK CANNON

  • I play trumpet and HOLY SHIT thats crazy to be able to play! all the mouth changes and how fast you gotta plays those notes damn thats fuckin good as shit!:D

  • oh yea, my name is wynton

  • and not distracting in a good way so no comments on that!!!

  • guys shut up. (accidentally) reading your comments while listening to this is destroying EVERYTHING.

just say normal things like "wow this guy is the shit i wish i could be him" rather than your dumb things like "wow i have a boner and now im gonna try to get attention on youtube by announcing it". its distracting from my appreciation of this incredible recording.

  • THIS GUY IS AMAZING!

  • 7 haters are wasps. The other 525 are Marsalis fans and bumblebees. (Yes that was corny but it's true)

  • @Frizzyjack 9 wasps

  • gotta agree with Cereal here. After 30+ years of playing, stuff like this makes one want to give up playing altogether. It is always painful having to remind yourself that you are never going to attain anything great like this.

  • @Jointlock --- Why give up because this guy plays like a machine ?? I'd rather play one note that swings than play a bazillion tasteless phrases an 140 MPH. If you were to slow this piece down to the generally accepted tempo, it would sound a LOT more like music. Check out the Harry James version to hear MUSIC !!

  • He is great.

  • Wynton Marsalis is the "King of Classical Trumpet", because he has the highest technical capabilities to play the trumpet at super fast tempos, with absolute clarity.

He also can sustain a note indefinitely by circular breathing, without puffing his cheeks, by storing enough air underneath his tongue, with total accuracy in a solo performance, such as Perpetual Motual on the trumpet, that was originally written for violin solo with orchestra.

  • thats possibly the most structured thing wyntons ever played! as he is a jazz god

  • @kylecbenton His also an accomplished classical musician...

  • At 1:05 it sucked balls

  • @ultraplatnumman lolz, when it ends

  • Haha could you imagine the look on a conductors face if he had to direct Wynton. I think it would look like this o__O.

  • eargasm

    yep..its happened

  • @RocknRollkat I thought you said it was a matter of personal preference!

You my friend are one non-intellectual kid.

You try and act like you know what you are talking about but in fact you don't

You try playing that fast, let's see it.

    You are just ignoramus!

  • I think the difference between the two is that Wynton's bumblebee is much smaller and swifter, whereas Henry James' bumblebee is laden with pollen and ecstatic from all the nectar!

  • Obviously Marsalis' interpretation is different from James', is it possibly that he want's it less 'musical'? NOT every virtuoso can play fast with practice, Davis couldn't play as fast as Diz' and composed to fit his OWN style. Jorge Ben Jor had trouble play bossa nova style guitar and ended up a master of Tropicalia.

  • If I could live 300 years and practice every second, I probably still wouldn't be close 2 wynton marsalis

  • @Cereal1116 it would probably take closer to 15,000 hours but what's the difference :)

  • this composition for me is the prime example of a piece that is only played to show off someone's technique, which has to be amazin to be able to play this. So whenever i listen to this, i don't see it as real music.

This version being the exception. Somehow this is more music than technique.

  • think he missed a note.......not sure where.

  • °Q°

  • Truly amazing!

  • what happened i just blinked.

  • This. Is. Awesome!!!

  • I would have Wynton's babies. I love this man.

  • To ( Love Music123211) Speaking of Stupid,You missed the whole point!!

If you can play this song as good ,or better I would be glad to give you a compliment, but for me ,this man will be hard to beat playing this song!!!

Wake up !!!!your on the wrong end of the horn!!!!!!

  • omg awesome

  • To all you trumpet players of the world!! Put em, away cause this is the best!!!

  • @stuballs42 lol so just becuz there is one trumpet player who fucking awesome you may not play trumpet? lolz thats just stupid no offense :P

  • Donald Hunsberger was for years the arranger for the United States Marine Band, "The President's Own." Semper Fidelis!

  • i heard he cycle breathed this, he has skill

  • @noheart341 its called circular breathing

  • Er... What makes him controversial?

  • @WhatYourKiddingRight

his opinions on what jazz is and what jazz isnt piss some people off

  • Do you hear the cleaneliness in his playing...DAMN

  • This is the best Flight of the Bumblebee I've ever heard xD

  • in the house with slippers jajaj

  • this is a good performance! People get carried away with the best in the world etc. but he's very good.

  • @trumpetsarekewl If not him, then who?

  • @pyrodudefirestarter have you listened to Rafael Mendez? my current favorite live player is David Longoria- his song Castle In Spain has technique, style and amazing chops which I heard on PBS. google him or his name dot com. also ever listened to Doc Severinsen? for technique he rocks too even now at 80 yrs old!!!

  • awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Just effing sick!

  • It is my goal to play this on my trumpet.

  • Bravo!

To one of the greatest musician of our times!!!

    We love you MAESTRO!!!

  • Seriously, you guys are saying he has no musicality in his phrases, well no shit.. You try and play that fast, then insult WYNTON FUCKING MARSALIS' musicality. Listen to his jazz, he is one of the most musical trumpet players out there, not to mention his technique which is what he demonstrates in this recording.

  • @lineemup2knockemdown I've heard this interlude played very musically on many different instruments. I've heard it played very unmusically also.

There's a video called 'roboclarinet' that proves my point.

    Check it out.

  • @lineemup2knockemdown so fucking true like any1 reading this listen to trupeters lullaby

  • @lineemup2knockemdown

exactly, he's just playing the music score in this video...

  • @lineemup2knockemdown Try listening to the Harry James interpretaion posted below. THAT'S musical ! Anybody can play fast with enough practice, but to play MUSIC is another matter entirely. There's technique, then there's musical technique. Big difference.

  • @RocknRollkat u are an idiot. U think he plays with no musicality that is bullshit. everything he plays is musical

  • @jrvanderveen Aaaaaah yes, a deep, insightful reply from an obvious intellectual !

  • @RocknRollkat I have been reading some of your other comments. I get it if you dislike Wynton just in general everybody has their own preferences but you cannot say that he plays with no musicality. Try listening to some of his other songs or even some of his jazz songs where he plays with soul and musicality. He loves what he plays and tries to play everything as musical as possible. Sure on a song like this which is fast you have to sacrifice some feel but that is expected.

  • @jrvanderveen --- I know more about this guy than I find appropriate to discuss here. He's "parlayed" his marginal soul and blistering technique into a career "politician" for the rich people at PBS (Public Broadcasting) here in New York, and has become the "safe" ethnic voice for "jazz" at Carnegie Hall. . The "Bumblebee" chart was interpreted incorrectly to begin with, so from point "A" I question his musicality. The chart speciifies "Vivace", not il più velocemente possibile".

  • @RocknRollkat If you dog on this, you my friend are a fool

  • @lineemup2knockemdown my understanding is it should be played fast enough , there is no need for a breath mark or phrase.

  • too bad he slurs all of it... its still crazy. id be fucking insane if it was tongued...

  • @ladeedeeladeeda123 It's supposed to be slurred

  • Does anyone know where the old movie was this song used? thanks

  • Always enjoyed this!!!!Even still as an adult!

  • @RocknRollkat

Oh and by the way, Flight of the Bumblebees isn't supposed to be swung. Duh.

  • @Witch1993 To begin with, "Flight" wasn't written for trumpet.. Read any transcription, and you will NEVER see "Play as fast funeral march --- DO NOT SWING". The piece is the musical interpretation of a bumble bee in flight, that doesn't sound like it calls for a dull, robotic interpretation.

  • @RocknRollkat Perhaps you should listen to Wynton play Flight of Bumblebee on Sesame Street. It did sound like a bee in flight there. It's on YouTube. It's an episode where he and Hoots are explaining notes.

  • @GAshoneybear --- I don't have the time or desire to track down a 'better' performance of the piece. I know the chart, it does not say "Play like you're ass is on fire". Interpretation of a chart is of fundamental importance. For someone who claims to be a classically trained musician, he doesn't show me much. He is a politician, and PBS has made him a society child. His commentary on the PBS Jazz "documentary" was a joke among real jazz players.

  • @RocknRollkat It's not that serious. I don't have an issue with you not liking him, a lot of people feel he's overrated, but why waste your time on his videos to convince people who worship his chops and Monette that he can't play? You've wasted more time on here replying than if you had looked up a video you wanted to watch.

  • @RocknRollkat <-- This guy is a fag.

  • @freetrader0000 --- Another well thought through and introspective comment from someone who is obviously an expert of the arcane and esoteric.

  • @RocknRollkat <-- This guy is still a fag.

  • @freetrader0000 <--- YOu're repeating yourself. You display the beginnings of a malignant lack of originality.

  • @RocknRollkat <-- This guy can't stop being a fag.

  • @freetrader0000 <----- Grow up, fool.

  • @freetrader0000 <------ and why can't you stop using such an insulting phrase?!?! You're obviously no better than the guy you're insulting. Grow up and think about what you're saying before you say it!

  • @CRoseG100 <--- This guy just gave me a boner.

  • @VexusFlytrap <----- this dudes boner just gave me a boner.

  • @CRoseG100 <---- Wow, you just made me a fag. I'm glad we understand each other.

  • @RocknRollkat <----- Fag Fag

  • @freetrader0000 --- You display about as much imagination as your boy Wynton.

  • @RocknRollkat <---- This guy is even more of a fag.

  • @freetrader0000 How do you know?

  • Yeah, great, blah blah blah, but can Wynnie make ONE note swing ??

Computers can do this too, but they can't swing.

This isn't music, gang, it's technique with no soul.

  • @RocknRollkat if you don't think wynton marsalis is a superior musician, you are obviously musically ignorant.

  • @RocknRollkat This is obviously probably the only video you have seen of wynton.

  • @coolio3163 That's partially true. Why would I spend time listening to guys who hang around Lincoln Center promoting 'safe' music to nervous boojies when I could be downtown with the real heavyweights ??

I always get nervous when jazz musicians put on tuxes.

Like I said, the guy's a tremendous technician, but so is my computer.

  • @RocknRollkat He plays mostly jazz. He barely has most of his work on computers. 90% of it is live. Watch a few videos like "Happy birthday - Wynton marsalis". He does solos on that, and you should watch one of the like 500 jazz concerts that are on YouTube.

  • Yeah, great, blah blah blah, but can Wynnie make ONE note swing ??

Computers can do this too, but they can't swing.

This isn't music, gang, it's technique with no soul.

  • Yeah, great, blah blah blah, but can Wynnie make ONE note swing ??

  • @RocknRollkat YO your effn rock...lol i said the exact SAME thing Wynton can't swing for jack he's not melodic, is phrasing isn't good personal opinion and his vocabulary isn't there take it from a musician like Nicholas Payton even tho there two TOTALLY different genres Wynton tries to do it all but he can't

  • @ladytrumpet010 He knows which side of the bread the butter's on. He's "PBS Safe", the darling of NYC's upper krust (sic). He's got the fame, the recognition from the "correct" people, but no soul. That's the price you pay. All others pay cash, wait on line and listen to Miles.

    Rocky

  • @RocknRollkat

If you're suggesting that one should listen to Davis over Marsalis, well, that's simply a matter of preference. You see, back when Marsalis was an emerging trumpet soloist, he and Davis didn't see eye to eye when it came to music. Davis preferred bebop and fusion, whereas Marsalis favored the old fashioned style. So to say that Davis is better than Marsalis isn't fair; they played two different styles.

  • @Witch1993 Old fashioned style ? Which one ? Music dates well into prehistory. I'm not suggesting who's "better", I agree with Miles' comments to Bryant Gumbel on "best", etc.

  • Nothing to say ,Just supppppp~~~~r!!!

  • this is crazy

  • I play trumpet hes like my idol

  • talk about valve oil

  • Listen to how relaxed and smooth he plays the notes - it's unreal

  • i wanna know how much is slurred :P

  • This is amazing.

I'd love to play this on my trumpet. No where near that skilled yet.

    :D

  • thats how a real trumpet player does it right there!!!

  • monette trumpet!

  • eccellente 5*

  • Damn thats like quadruple tounging....
