The 66 is the most free blowing , biggest but 76 a little more focused and direct, and both are great. The 76UL seems a little closer to the 66 than the 76lacquer-- you really need to try them. I don't really notice a lot of difference re free blowing. The 76 one piece sop is a real bitch- a great horn. Check out my you tube site - there are plenty of comarisons. My pfeference is the 86 sop-- but so so so so close
Is that 76 mauriat free blowing? How about the altissimo, is that good. I'm to get as much info as possible because I am really considerong buying that 76 tenor and that one piece soprano. Reply if you can. Thanks
Is the Jody Jazz piece very flexible. Im looking for a bright tone like Coltrane's along with that openess and the Jody Jazz sounds almost like it. Do you know what I mean? I hope I'm not going crazy! Lol
The jodi jazz piece is easier to blow than the equivalent in an otto link. I think they are really good pieces, but now I am alternating between an old selmer ( opened to 115) and my old otto link ( which is just under a 10 (127), and honestly I would prefer it if the link was a little more closed
I use the link with all the latest videos ( 101 challenger etc)
The 86 gets the richest sound with this setup. I've been finding that tip openings around .100 -.110 with a big chamber, low baffle, and hard reed coax the richest sound from a vintage 10M.
Thanks for your comments. Good comments too. All horns were equal distance from the mic. This was done on my lap top with the built in mic. I think you are on to it re the conn vrs 86 comments. You cannot discount the beautiful sweetness of the conn up higher, but the 86 has a fatness all over
2nd runner up - M76: Not the fattest sound but sounded fine throughout all registers. It was balanced. It's similar sounding to the 10M in the lower register, particularly below G.
1st Runner Up - Conn 10M: Not the fattest & sort of "vin ordinaire" below G (as with the 76), but it's sweet above higher F, particularly with altissimo notes.
Winner - M86: Wow, this had a thick, balanced tone throughout. (Did you record closer to the mic.) Almost as good as the 10m high up.
I liked the CONN 10M the best. Second was the 86 then last was the 76. You sound great on ALL of them and I don't know HOW you can play a 10* with a 4 reed...You must be a gorilla! But it sounds great...
honestly the P M horns have been a real painfull change-- i endorsed them, and have been challenged in all ways in relation to sound, and the old conn. I did many albums on it-- and yes it has a real lyrical beauty about it, but the depth of sound is not as selmer or the 76, 86-- this does not bother most, but I have been listening to the greats in closer detail to the core of sound, and want that in my playing-- hence my quest --
Thanks for your comments-- I am steering in the 86 direction-- the Conn is lyrical- i know what you mean-- the 86 has more depth and richness-- dark power-- sim to 76 but 76 is more focused or defined- "tight".
PM 86 - "fattest" sounding, but not quite as lyrical....sometimes the notes tend to break up, and lose focus, thus not as "sweet" of a sound. Lots of Balls though!
PM 76 - "throaty" and nicely balanced in all registers, also very lyrical sounding. Hard 2 choose!
Is there extra care you need to take with unlacquered instruments? If so what do you need to?

@ rogermanins
Is your mouthpiece-reed setup hard to blow or is that Jody Jazz piece as free blowing as it is claimed to be?

My personal observations for whatever it's worth....
You sound incredible on ALL these horns, and i absolutely love these videos! Truly informative sir!
Conn 10M - most "lyrical" sounding horn with beautiful upper register fullness.

Hi Roger,
I think you sound great on the PM 86UL here. Ofcourse all of them sounds good but the 86UL to me just has this raw power and a deep sound.
