Maybe he was a little rough, but union apprenticeships are real and what private employers are doing around training these days can be pretty lame. If they do it at all they have to be bribed into doing it; and if they are a publicly-held corporation their mandate is to do anything they can that's not illegal and won't cost them customers to make a buck. There are exceptions I know but that's the general rule.
