  • Huge doggy bowl... Then again there is the English Mastiff

  • "It's really quite a large rod." Oooohh, professor!

  • hahaa

  • 4:10

    neil smiles

    ...its a miracle

  • That hair.

  • Oh its on your camera

    'untuned television'

  • 2:18 His hands lol!

  • Why do I always get the impression that the chubby guy doesn't really know anything about anything. He just wants to see explosions/reactions.

  • why does the sodium explode after it burns for a while? is there a certain temperature that it will 'pop'? what is it about the molten sodium that wants to explode?

  • so i was wondering what dose this has to do with scorpio zodiac sign and what is this stuff used for ?

  • So is it true you can make a battery from rare earth salts

  • That old guy with an afro is like the prime example of wierd scientist icon

  • Na in water: explosions

Na+ (from the dilution of NaCl in water) in water: Absolutely nothing

    Crazy O.o

  • @rolingpingu Not really crazy if you think about it. Sodium reacts with water because it wants to lose an electron to gain a stable configuration, Na+ alread has lost its electron so it has no need to react.

  • @Jeremy0459 Yeah I see ! What impresses me is how one electron (ok I know it also depends on other factors, like the orbitals) can make a big difference!

  • Dude you got Neil to laugh!!!!!!

  • 0:39 makes me want a fucking shawarma

  • Comment removed

  • @noobtube3000 DAMN U!!!! Now I'm hungry and want a fucking shawarma too! XD I never saw it as that

  • "Oh it's on your camera!"

    BOOM!

    Goodbye $5000s

  • Sodium Chloride = NaCl = Table Salt

  • afro

  • he knows a lot bout science but not hair cutting hahah

  • It wouldn't surprise me this professor were jewish. Just look at his face!!

  • lol now try some potassium

  • 'Its a really quite large rod"

  • i wanna be freakin scientist

blow shit up all day, sign me up

  • 3:47 "...Whoa! exciting ! " LOOOOOOOOOOOOL

  • great job fellas,& glad to see you enjoy your work

  • alkaali metal

  • sodium is a metal??

  • @behnamasid cool:)

  • @TheFuggedaboutit: Yes, indeedy. So is lithium, potassium, calcium and several more rare ones, though you rarely see them as pure metals, since they are so reactive.

  • @puncheex ahhhh i get it :) thank you a lot.

  • imagine a terrorist throwing that 2 kilo of sodium in a public pool

  • @ZinovaX: Yeah - think of the carnage as they clean the pool out afterwards.

  • pop rocks

  • "Other places like this where they have large underground salt mi--Deposits......"

  • Not the safest blokes in the world, eh?

  • I think this is one of the few pv where you will see Neil the badass actually laugh 4:07. I think he's hot (and not in a sodium in water kind of way).

  • i had a high school science teacher that did experiments with chunks of sodium in the swimming pool until it turned green a week before water polo season started

  • "Really quite large rod."

    lol.

  • What I love most about these videos is when the guys are together you can hear them giggling like, well, school boys. The female chemists are always more serious but the boys.....not so much.

  • You can cut this metal as easily as you would cheese!

  • Hey. I dont think it's my business but I would Like to know why does the professor hands is shaking as he is holding the Sodium Chloride? I see it in other videos too.

  • @Kytonite cause hes old, stuff like that happens when you get old.

  • imagion what would happen when it rains at that place...

  • @rroge5 i had the same thought =D

  • I have a specimen of natural sodium chloride. The name of it is "Halite", and because of the chemical structure, it's always in a 3 direction flat surface known as cleavage. its fun working with minerals, i did some volunteer work at my local museum for micro-mineralogy, it was fun =]

  • lol, good luck man

  • "now this is a broken one, which my students have broken."

    damn students

  • I've read that NaCl dissolved in water splits into free Na+ and Cl- ions. Why doesn't the chlorine smell and sodium burn then? And can the ions exist without the water, if you remove the Cl- and let the water evaporate, and then get a lump of Na+?

  • @spajdude what! because they are In association with the polar water molecules in the solution they and sodium is in an ionic form in the water so it will not react

  • my grandma have that same sodium lap. if u taste it it tastes salt :p

  • Kebab!

  • in fact, i am interested in the periodic table umbrella and the elements clock something!!

  • I'd like to see you put sodium into liquid oxygen

  • The lump looks like a Horse dick.

  • Ha ha ha ha ha!!! Guy looks like Benny Hill's long lost brother!!

  • Would be easier to just call it Natrium. =(

  • that huge wack of sodium looks like wax from the outside!!!!! can you please make me one of your students??? Another thing is that i dont see wat is so funny in burning sodium!!! you are very lucky to have so much sodium!!!

  • He looks like kevin james.

  • my chemistry teacher did this. but when he did it he put a big glass beaker over the cup of water so when the sodium exploded it wouldn't splatter everywhere. but he forgot about the gas thats created when its reacting with the water and since it was in a beaker it was trapped so when it exploded it ignited the gas and the beaker flew at least a foot in the air above a ball of fire. then it fell and shattered on the lab table, he did it in the classroom too. it was the biggest teacher fail ever.

  • Mytgbusters showed what would happen if you drop 2 kg lump of sodium into water . There is a video on youtube - MythBusters Viewers Special Threequel 2. pretty impressive.

  • haha You all are such chemists

  • My friend's last name is Na, its funny, his usual name is either Na or Sodium(Man)

  • i dare ya to put that entire log of sodium in water

  • 2kg of sodium in HCl

    BOOM!!!!

  • @ASSHOLELA do u want salt? ..u can jus get some in the market ya know..

  • @rhn94

no u cant get boom fromsalt

u can only get boom from acid + sodium

  • @ASSHOLELA u moron .. if u add sodium to HCL .. u'll get common salt .. no boom ..

    2Na + 2HCL =2 NaCl + H2

learn fucking chemistry before u say anything .. i learnt this in 6th grade ..

  • @rhn94

    ever studied chemistry?

When you add sodium to water the water acts as an acid and gives the hydrogen to the sodium. This gives the boom when you puts the sodium in water.

When you put sodium in an acid the HCl has a greater tendency to give the hydrogen ion to the sodium, makeing a faster reaction and a bigger boom!

  • omg his hair. so puffy

  • Haha. He looks like a real mad scientist

  • exactly! love that。 reminds me of einstein LOL

  • i dont think thats very nice !!

  • You should've dropped that big chunk into the water! there would be A LOT stuck on a camera :)

  • So....if H2 is being released, what's happening with the Na? Is it turned into an ion and goes into solution? Does it covalently bond to oxygen and not go into solution?

  • i went to the mine where some lamps like that are made :D its in poland

  • 1:14 THATS WHAT SHE SAID

  • @willghass lol!!!!

  • 0:19 THATS WHAT SHEEE SAID!!!!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • Comment removed

  • I want to see what happens when you drop water ON the sodium instead of the other way.

  • i wanna lick that lamp...

  • Comment removed

  • I still like potassium better!

  • wonder what happen if that rod is dropped into a pool

  • BOOM.

  • if there's chlorine bleach in the pool, nothing cool.

I thought about it, too... then I realized... NaCl... :( salt ruins everything

  • "really quite large rod" THAT'S WHAT SHE SAID!

  • 2 Na + 2 H2O -> 2 NaOH + 1 H2

    Natrium + Water

It's just like little fireworks !

  • saw that huge lump of sodium at the start and i thought "Should chuck that in someones pool"

  • So much delicious sodium! mmmmmmm

  • Well yeah if you don't mind eating metal unless you meant sodium chloride.

  • haha they sure know how to have some fun

  • Face.

  • white guy with an afro!

  • i havent done my homework since 4 grade. and ya im graduating soon

  • throw that big ass piece into a pond

  • To make a swimming pool!

  • A professor of mine once told me that when he was in highschool they were doing experiments with sodium and this was a time when students were aloud to do experiments with it on their own. One of the kids snuck up and grab a big chunk of it and stuck it in his back pocket. Well it was a hot day and the moisture from his butt started to react with the sodium. Seeing how their was big pool outside the science building the young ran out and jumped in the pool. You imagine what happened next.

  • @AlohaBay He blew up?

  • almost. He couldnt walk for a while is what I heard.

  • @AlohaBay That was quite a stupid move =P

  • @AlohaBay did he die?

  • @AlohaBay thhis is fake story?

  • @AlohaBay AMAZING

  • correction:

    1s2 2s2 2p6 3s1

  • i learned tht 2 day and thank u 4 reminding me 2 do my homwork

  • lol, np, physics chemistry is easy, neway.

  • 3s1

  • 2.8.1 if you're still learning basic chemistry...

  • One of my science professors in college tole me that once some science geeks stole a big thing of sodium from the lab and started dumping it in a canal for the effect. He found out and confronted them and said to give back what was left and he wouldn't press charges.

  • these big sodium thing i want to throw in hno3 !

  • Thanks, well noted

  • lol the bald dude randomly has a crescent wrench in his coat pocket

  • Cuz he's a badass

  • when i was in high school i remember a freshman just dumped sodium down this sink thinkin it was just like table salt. We were all outside for the rest of the day.

  • guys laughing like little kids about the reaction before it says "sodium is dangerous, don't handle without expert supervision"

  • That guy has Mad scientist hair... LOVE IT! xD

  • Well... Never invite Sodium to a pool party.

  • umm.. the ending was really random /:

  • We did this in science at the beginning of the year, it was pretty cool I got to drop it in.

  • I'd kill for hair like that.

  • You should show us what happens if the water you put the sodium in is very hot.

  • Sodium is burning and than it explode !

    WOW !

  • how does the metal become your table salt

  • Comment removed

  • when it reacts with gaseous chlorINE it becomes the salt sodium chlorIDE ...

  • when it becomes chlorinated.

  • Throw Na into water, and that metal gets angry, fizzing, producing hydrogen gas, and, pop!

  • sodium in water

  • Lets burn that!

  • yeah right, gnrfanatic141414.

  • 2:11

When i saw him saying "Ooh its on your camera", and coming with that claw on his hands i just laughted and laughted.

One of the greatest funny scenes from periodicvideos.

  • fire works on water. how nice...

  • how would you put out the fire? O_O

  • Last words of a dead redneck? Hey y'all, watch this!

Here we watch his English cousin.

  • This is fantastic. I love it that they pretend it's the first take when they do it the second time.

  • 1:58 - 2:00

    xDDDDDDDDD

  • lol it looked like he was cutting a kebab

  • that scientist has a big ass afro

  • I think chemists are having too much fun.

  • lol. the Professer is so cool.

  • 2.20 shakie jakey

  • "oh, it's on the camera" lol

  • lol in the start, " very nice rod

  • that wannabeafro guy is shakin' it

  • it's kind of like really shiny clay

  • it looks fun doin that but do more!!

  • LOL NOICE HAIR

  • the afro is awsome

  • I would like to see what would happen if you put the whole container of sodium you had into that container of water (XD)

  • that one dude has a cool afro...

  • how bigs the fucking dog thats eating from that bowl?!

  • Maybe its two dogs...never know

  • Pretty damn big

  • LOOL. motherly feeelingg. i really like those experiments, i don't think i can ever try out one myself. :X

  • Rly good ^^ usually it doesnt explode

  • DROP THE WHOLE BAR IN

  • dude thats exactly what i said.

  • Where And What Page?

  • I've have always wanted to glue sodium or francium on a umbrella as a prank.

  • creative

  • cool, fireworks. xD

  • really quite large rod

  • WOW you switch it on, it lighs up. Amazing

  • flush the 2 kilo lump down the toilet and RUN!

  • haha nice, id pay to see that

  • so salts a metal
