@GymnastAimee Just take it slow. Just try kicking your legs out to the sides at the knees. Then just try and start doing it a bit faster. Then when you have that down, add the up and down motion with the hands. It's hard to get, but once you do it's really simple. You'll do fine.

@corinavaughan this is from the movie hairspray, this version was made in 2007. the time was set in the '60s, so its not 'from the old days' 50 years may seem like a long time to you, but its really not.

This isn't exactly the way it is done.  You have to add a whole lot of soul. I grew up in the 60's when this dance first came out. The song "Mashed Potatoes" was sung by an artist called Dee Dee Sharp. I believe it was on the Motown label.
