Mr. Armstrong was always my guy, even though he was old enough to be my grandfather. My mother and father both saw him at the Savoy here in Chicago in the late late, late 20's, during the Depression. They said he was sooo cool and kind to his audience. BET did a story on him about 20 years ago, said the man enjoyed a sensuous relationship with his wife. And they said he would knock on neighbors doors to say hello when returning from a gig. Now that's cool! That's a real man. Hollah! :D
I loved this era when the band was given some of the limelight and the vocalists shared their time on stage. And once Velma starts swingin' ooooh, shivers up my spine.
as i was watching, i was reading ur comments on Velma's greatness (DIDNT KNOW HER BEFORE)... and then she busted out dancing!!!!! OH HELL YES!!!!!! I LOVE IT!!! SHE GOT SOME GROOVE!!!
It just doesn't get any better than this! Imagine the hardship these musicians were faced with, and yet they entertained with such amazing swing! I only wish I could have heard Pops' comments on that set!
Get it Velma!
