the many times i've been around the highlands and anywhere in scotland really, I am amazed how little deer I have seen, and yes I am looking. Its not like kangaroos in Australia which are in plague proportions in many parts and are starving. Not ideals dear FACTS. Too many very smart, educated and influential people are really not allowing the "great unwashed" to get away with it any more. In fact, guess what, it soon will be illegal to slaughter ANYTHING. you are more likely to get off with a lighter sentance if you kill your spouse.
i can understand why some people dont like the concept of a mass cull of deer but it is surely better to perform this act than letting them destroy their own habitat by over-grazing and thus leading to their eventual starvation because there is not enough food left for them.
as far as i, and everyone else should be concerned, this is a perfectly acceptable use of tax-payers money. much better than paying idiots to live closer to parliament by 100 yards etc.!!!

I've said it before and I'll say it again, those that have committed acts of atrocity against defenceless animals will reap the consequences.
@saintbarbara , Please try and look at this for the good of the deer, yes these slaughters are far from ethical, but these are the fault of the snh and dcs not managing numbers properly. If handled correctly deer numbers could be controled humanely by taking out the old and weak instead of letting them die of starvation during the harsh winter. One quick clean shot ! its got to be better than starvation. If god is real, why does he allow these slaughters to happen?
as you like it. the days when "man" plays God is almost over. the rapidly growing awareness of armies of individuals who will not accept barbaric practices against any animals will see your dirty practices and "sport" and "livelihood" at an end.
To call someone "unstable" because they talk sense and honesty and the TRUTH, only reflects on your inability to justify your actions.
and like it not, you will have to pay for your actions.
Well guys thanks for adding your thoughts to this debate, if nothing else, Barbara's comments have opened my eyes to modern day "saints". I originally posted this video to highlight the heavy handed and indefensible practices of the Deer Commission for Scotland, NOT to suggest that the harvesting (culling if you will)of wild Scottish deer is a barbaric process, far from it. I just wonder if the "saint" is willing to tell us if she is a vegetarian or not....
@saintbarbara You seem like an intelligent being, so why do you hinge your whole life around a mythical being? There is no proof and there has never been any proof of a being greater than us! It's unbelievable that so many people believe in something as farfetched as God and all his trappings? I am not in the slightest religious and I am very happy. I am a good family man who drinks little and does no ill to others; I do that because it’s a good way to live, not for any reward after I am gone.
I am so happy you continue on your self-justifying tirade jim.
no doubt your livelihood has a lot to do with slaughter.
Religion is man-made, as is the Bible.
Stop quoting God here jim. you are a barbaric coward slaughtering unnecessarily.
if you believe "man" has risen to the top of the food chain, you're a poor sad person. Man was put as custodian of the planet and it's inhabitants - and thats the reason jim, you and yours will soon burn in hell. soon.
Man has risen to the top of the food chain just as the lion is king of the jungle. If you consider a beast to be your equal, then you should be treated as one. However as we are the most evolved of the species, instead we will probably give you the psychiatric care that you need!
Judging from the religious intolerance in your posts, you have no concept o the Bible and my guess is that you are a member of the so called "Religion of Peace" ? I suppose that is why you identify with beasts then?
*coughs here* what about before man actually arrived to "intervene"? Maybe we should be culling the Africans and unnecessary numbers of hungry humans rather than worry about the "deer population of Scotland". Stop justifying your own barbaric behaviours.
Prior to man intervening, deer number were kept in check by predation from Bears and Lynx.
Barbara, you have no concept of animal welfare other than cuddling a bloody cat and getting all doey eyed when said animal passes away. Nor have you any concept of land management nor wildlife management. All you see is a Bambi, a deer with a personality thanks to Walt fxxxing Disney and Beatrix Bloody Potter. You are emotionally retarded and have no concept of animal welfare.
Do you get upset when you see a lion kill a gazelle, or when a chimpanzee kills a smaller primate, or when a sow bear abandons its own offspring? Surely not? Or do you think we should educate the animal world of the benefits of a vegetarian diet?
Because there is a natural order with man at the top, predation ensures that the land can sustain certain populations of different life forms.
contd -> Such practices will not result in the detriment of the remaining genetic pool - this is common practice with elephant for example where their numbers are a problem. If harvested at the right time, in terms of population developement etc, there will actually be a positive effect upon the quality of the remaining animals and their offspring.
The DCS stated that there are now over 400 000 red deer alone in Scotland and that this is seriously affecting natural forest regeneration. I have personally seen herds of up to 500 strong in the highlands, such numbers are not sustainable! There has to be a consequent and harsh intevention (cull, slaughter, kill) whatever you want to call it, if the situation is to be rectified. Its normal within wildlife managment to sometimes eradicate a complete herd contd
What a stupid, barbaric and unnecessary practice. you should be totally disgusted with yourself you have NO attachment to "humanity". We are the custodians of these magnificent creatures and you are boring, uneducated and barbaric scum. I wish I could "gralloch" all of you.
It's funny that keeprs and stalkers "cull" but DCS, SNH and FCS "slaughter!
Caenlochan had far too many deer as did Mar.
How do you achive large culls without utilising out of season shooting and helicopters?
You can't , I have discussed this with many of the stalkers in the Glen Shee area and they agree.
I earn my money from deer and stalking but you have to be practicle , these culls are nothing to do with sport, they are a effective population reduction method.
A "slaughter" is a cull which removes hundreds of deer in one go, conducted over a short time scale. The by product of which is deer being chased day in day out for two months by helicopters and rifles. This results in high stress, failure to feed & misscarried calves. A classic example is Mar Lodge where this year hinds were stalked by day by the estate & shot with lamps at night by contractors. This is classic DCS / SNH-Rapid culls to meet yesterdays targets at the expense of deer welfare.
A "cull" is the removal of a given number of deer, usually equal to that off the reproductive rate for deer. On most estates this is conducted in a traditional manner and has little impact on the well being herd.
Residents here rely on tourism for their income. With this in mind, tourists travel to places such as Braemar in it`s natural beauty including red deer. I`ve never heard of anyone traveling to the Cairngorms to look at blaeberries.
I wish they had shown the earlier footage of the slaughter. That would certainly show the true colours of NTS, SNH, and the likes.
Total mismanagement, with disregard for the animals and the small local communities.
THE FORRESTRY COMMISION is all double standards u need levels 1@2 to get a lease on a small acreage of forrest to stalk whitch is well over priced.knowing a ranger has shot all the deer in the lamp the season before.the rangrs will shoot 90 per cent of their cull in the dark
So,nobody hunts them around your area? Hunters in our area of Montana keep the animals healthy and well populated by selecting deer that are injured or not of a good gene pool. When a nice buck gets old it will be shot as a trophy. This keeps generations of deer from becoming over populated and free of bad genetics. Look into quality deer management. It works and the hunters pay for land conservation and natural resources projects!
deer numbers have to kept down, but is mass slaughter of the fittest deer along with the weak the answer? it seems a policy of the labour government. why?. well, they have opened up the countryside, stalking and estate management are no longer wanted, they want to make the Highlands into one big lesuire park. i am afraid that with the cairngorm national park, deer in any sizeable numbers will probably be a thing of the past soon.
Once the deer have gone like the grouse, the gamekeepers will be the next in line for firing. Then you are left with the said government run leisure park, where the most wild thing you will see in the hills is an unshaven hiker.
You obviously dont realise what goes on behind the scenes. The estate works on a cull number and they have to kill that many deer within the season. The only way to do this is to take them out in large hits or else you would never make the numbers. If you didnt cull the deer their population would soon get out of hand, and due to lack of food and avaliable space they would probably starve to death. So before you go slagging off the deer commission of scotland again... get your facts right.
There is a big difference between achieving an annual cull and devastating a population in any region. Don't harp on about starvation, when if you had read my comments you would realise, they are culled annually on glenshee to keep the population in check. This cull was completely unnecessary and inhumane.
To be honist. As i do live in the highlands myself. Ive always been told that - Culling is to keep the population down, And NOT to "eradicate" as you are surgesting. If we dont cut down on these animals then they will! and have done in many cases, eaten all the heather, there for not allowing any other (and i mean Every ) other animal to stand and exist in these remote parts of scotland. I do not shoot to eradicate dam hippy!
Fair response, and I agree. Deer culling (like in which I am involed) is there to replace their predators which are long gone. Glenshee winds me up, not because i'm a hippy, but because the really did shoot them to hell and in a bad way.
And there is no hard scientific evidence to say deer have ever had a negative impact on other species.
Wot do u know! Deer have no natural predators these days cos a-holes have killed them all! If you leave the deer alone they will die of disease and hunger as there are far too many. On with the cull by trained personnel I say!
Oh really? I take it you are basing this on scientific evidence or personal experience?!! Since the formation of the Deer Commission for Scotland, I imagine deer are more at risk of dying from loneliness than hunger or overpopulation.
It is because of people like you i.e. "clueless" - that things like this are justified.
Deer control (culling) is always justified and the role of any responsible land manager. Deer eradication is different. It has no positive effect -- it ruins a sporting industry, removes jobs form the highlands, takes away shooting revenue from places which are dependant upon it, and damages tourism. Not least the needless stress and suffering of deer during these 'non-traditional' (overnight) culls.
I agree, as I myself am involved in the annual control of deer populations. However, this cull was carried out at gross neglect of the deer's welfare. This type of killing went on almost every day for weeks. Wounded hinds, young stags shout out of season, you name it. Over the top and reckless.
restore big cats and other extinct keystone predators to great brittain, there problem solved

And there is no hard scientific evidence to say deer have ever had a negative impact on other species.

An overpopulation would surly affect the food sources of other animals in the area.

And to answer your question Meallbhan --"Wot do you know?"..... -- A darn sight more than you.
Please, if anyone wishes to comment on this video in future, please base your comment on scientific fact or at very least common sense.

Population control has to come one way or another

I agree, as I myself am involved in the annual control of deer populations. However, this cull was carried out at gross neglect of the deer's welfare. This type of killing went on almost every day for weeks. Wounded hinds, young stags shout out of season, you name it. Over the top and reckless.
