  • Only Julie Andrews can make that language sound appealing to non- speakers. I've always found Yiddish to be otherwordly.

  • This iz amazing. mazel tov Julie

  • D'aww, Julie is adorable. L'chaim!

  • Men and women dancing at a Jewish wedding, I doubt! And the Rabbi dancing nooooo

  • @southafricandominion maybe theyre reform lol

  • @JesuaArron yes or liberal and reform lol

  • OMG....Is that Mary Tyler Moore at 1:12 , in the pink dress???

  • @imbalm1 You are correct...this scene is from the movie "Thoroughly Modern Millie"

  • I love jewish music, its very close to my heart

    lily

  • talent is talent...no getting away from it. She is great.

  • I have this movie, and it is wonderful!! I love all her movies, but this is one of my favorites.

  • JULY ANDREWS IS NOT JEWISH BUT SHE IS A DARLING AND POSSIBLY THE FIRST LADY OF THE ENTERTAINMANT WORLD. I SIMPLY LOVE HER.

  • DIDNT KNOW SHE WAS JEWISH WHATS THE NAME OF THE FILMMM???

    THANKSSSS SHABAT SHALOM

  • @iosefcaro Thoroughly Modern Millie is the movie's name

  • didn't adam sandler sing a little of this in the film "the wedding singer"?

Always loved julie in TTM, with MTM.

  • I didn't know she was Jewish.

  • Julie Andrews is a wonderful, broad-minded, realistic person. (She doesn't even call "The Sound of Music" as "The Sound of MUCUS", as another well-known person does. If ONLY JEWS were as broad-minded, (finding value in cultures other than their own), perky and laid-back happy, as Julie Andrews is!

  • @UTAOUB Yeah, because every single JEW in the world is EXACTLY like you described.

If anyone here is narrow-minded, it's you with your inclusion of all Jews.

  • @shiratel couldn't of said it better!

  • @UTAOUB What are you talking about? Jews are very broad minded. At least the ones I know..

  • So maybe Jews arent this bad aye?

  • this is the proof yiddish is germanic language whose background is the gothic language in ukraine, askenazis are a mixing sarmatians, armenoids, turkic people, goths and slavics, khazar empire adopted gothic as a officer language that is the reason askenazis speak germanic language and it is not from german.

  • I love this part of "Thoroughly Modern Millie"! This was made in 1966, a year after "The Sound of Music."

  • Yiddish music is delightful. Pity about the language: not a patch on Ladino.

  • seems like deutsch, no Jewish...

  • @reakert Its Yiddish which is a mixture of Hebrew/Jewish and German.

  • @MegaKrishan123 yiddish is germanic language whose background is the gothic language in ukraine, askenazis are a mixing sarmatians, armenoids, turkic people, goths and slavics, khazar empire adopted gothic as a officer language that is the reason askenazis speak germanic language and it is not from german.

  • @haddadmansour Actually, Jiddisch is a dialect of Rhenish German - brought to Eastern Europe in the medieval era by refugees from horrors of prejudice by Christians - prejudice that erupted in the Crusades. Gothic, the Germanic dialect of the Gothic people [from Gotland], is now extinct.

  • I knowed that Julie is juish actress but I don't know about she speak and sing on yiddish.

    Bravo!!

  • Majestic, thank you so much for this !! Shared !!!!

  • After the very first note give a thumbs up if you started singing, "...spent the time of my life... And I never felt this way befor.e.."

  • Beautiful, just beautiful! Thank you for sharing this with us.

  • wow, cool song. I like it.

    And Julie Andrews is divine!!

  • Such talent! She carries off the song wonderfully and makes it look effortless.

    What a treasure.

  • I love the old lady in black. That will be me one day. Watch it.

  • @0AmyK0 Which one?

  • @TubaGlider2 The Jewish grandmother (Who is pretty obviously a young dancer in makeup.) Not the white slaver landlady.

  • mi piace tantissimo la voce de julie andrews e anche una bravissima attrice peccato solo che con l'operazione alla gola del 1997 che i dottori hanno sbagliato non ha piu quella voce!!!!!

  • marvelous! I just feel if I were in Israel! Delightfull!

  • what's the name of the film????

  • @hotsweetyboy Thoroughly Modern Millie(1965) A WONDERFUL MOVIE!!!!

  • beautiful!!!! soulful and inspiring.

  • 3:26 is the best part ever.

  • If Such and annoying woman would come to my wedding and try to steal the show I would toss her out :P ( A Joke, Don't Hate)

  • How much fun is that dance at 2:30. I wanna learn it!

  • I am not a Jew, I am a Goy, but I love yiddish language and klezmer music....

    Shalom.

  • Julie is great!

Have you ever noticed (and before I say this, may I just say Yiddish is my favorite language, it's absolutely beautiful!) that if you speak Yiddish in a slow, hissy voice, it sounds like Parseltongue? Just a thought!

  • which movie is it?

  • @maryg0386 Throughly Modern Millie!

  • @maryg0386

Thoroughly Modern Millie. 1967 E.U.A. com Julie Andrews

    James Fox

    Mary Tyler Moore

    Carol Channing

    John Gavin

  • SHALOM VERY NICE VIDEO TOV TODA

  • Loving the GRRR... she does at 3.33

  • Ahahah 2:18 Lmao!!!

  • i love this song :D

  • I wish the Broadway show included this.

  • Very impressive pronunciation. She's such a pro to get this down right.

  • i really like this scene although it"s choreographed; i could watch it day and night until i learned those steps that the bride and groom do and then their parents join them- to life!

  • What is the film?

  • @graemephillips Thoroughly Modern Millie

  • Only reason this song is a thousand times better is b/c julie andrews is singing it. I love her she's amazinggg, her voice will live on forever<3

  • the language must be one very close to German, because i only speak English and German andunderstood the whole thing pretty much

  • @fatheranthony4pope it's yiddish, the hybrid language of germanic jews.

  • @Toad45 Well that makes sense, if they are Germanic Jews :)

  • and...what movie is it?

  • The fellow playing the clarinet is Mickey Katz, the father of Joel Grey and the grandfather of Jennifer grey. Yes, the chirribimbom is also a Jewish melody or nigun-- a wordless melody used originally by Chasidim.

  • is the last part also yiddish where she goes chillibombom.....grrr....?

  • I love this movie!

  • Yeah, its enjoyable, i don't think Julie is Jewish but it's a suspend disbelief scene in a lightweight musical. It evokes a smile and nothing more.

  • @colinwells4 She's not supposed to be Jewish in the movie, either. She's just the entertainment at a Jewish wedding!

  • @BehindtheSchemes Yeah, that's well taken, i apologise!

  • @colinwells4 No worries, it's all good. :)

  • drrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr, dilidilidili !

  • what movie it is

  • JULIE ANDREWS RULES YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

  • Very Nice!

  • il n'est^pas necessaire de parler le yiddish pour apprécier cette vidéo de toute beauté.

Bravo à Julie et son équipe

  • kol eisha :) love movies that attempt to portray jewish traditions.

  • I think that no one else can sing like Ms Julie Andrews. Add to that she is such a fine and beautiful, even today.

  • I love this movie :D

  • Julie is amazing in whatever she does singing wise. I give major props to her for singing this song even though she's not Jewish, it sounds so beautiful. I love the part at 3:33 where she does the little growl thing! And the fact that I can understand the little bits of German!

  • It's yiddish, I grew up in the East End of London speaking it. Very little English was spoken where I lived. She's not semitic and is unable to make the "ch"sounds

The film is very typical American Jewish. We have orthodox rabbonim, dancing with mixed couples. No,, no. !! Not on

Yiddish is a bastarddsed German anyhow

If they were orthodox, there woul dbe a mechintzer

  • @cockneydoll thats right and the chussan and the rabbi would be wearin kapotahs

  • @cockneydoll thats right and the chussan and the rabbi would be wearin kapotahs

  • Ognisperanza, Gracias!

  • Am Israel hai,hai ve kayam!!!

  • it's sounds a little bit german. I'm dutch (from the Netherlands, next to germany) and I can understand a little bit of the lyrics.

  • @crystalclearelena it's yiddish, a mixture of hebrew and german with some words form slavic languages thrown in.

  • @skewlboypin

as a native hebrew speaker who was raised by a yiddishe grandma I can say it's mostly german with the majority of the "core words" being of hebrew origin. german people with average language skills can definitely understand most of the yiddish language.

  • @Belson20

Jo, Schwiitzerdütsch is harder to understand.

  • I believe Mandy Patinkin once did a cover of Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious in Yiddish.

  • maravillosa como siempre julie andrewes, muchos besos para ti porsiempre

  • lA TIJERA DEL NOVIO Y LA NOVIA ES IMPECABLE

  • Good morning!

    Thanks for sharing. 5 * * * * *

I wish you a nice day out.

    Hugs and Peace! "

  • It's... Jewish!

  • Is idish

  • OY VEY! WHO KNEW!

  • I love the part where mary tyler moore tells the obviously jewish couple, "it's Jewish."

  • @mierpaul What may not be clear is that Mary Tyler Moore's character was referring to the LANGUAGE being sung, not the ethnicity of the song. "Yiddish", the language name, literally means "Jewish", just like "francais" means French.

  • @rpresser That answer may satify the Ashkenazim, but for me and my family, "Jewish" means Italkit or Judeo-Italian. Nevertheless, your point is well taken. Peace.

  • @mierpaul oh, i know!! that part makes me laugh sooo hard!!!

  • A great movie indeed!!!!! Todá ravá for posting!

  • It would be so nice if all the goyim who hate Jews were actually just as sweet as Julie Andrews, and instead of hating us celebrated life with us...

Julie is so great, so sweet, she is an absolute 100.

  • Never thought I'd hear that...

  • This video must be from a Region 2 release. It is improperly pitched. Julie, as usual, is perfection.

  • ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhh mammamamaa mia....... bellisimo¡¡¡¡¡ gracias por este video

  • sooooooo wonderful movie !!!!

    SYL

  • Sadly, the film isn't that good. The two principals in the film, Julie Andrews & Mary Tyler Moore are two single women in the roaring 20's U.S. (New York) who are invited to a "Jewish wedding". It's a memorable, good scene in an otherwise miserably written film about single women being brutilized (into prostitution?) by a Chinese syndicate.

  • The wedding scene has nothing whatsoever to do with the film and is a bit confusing. Beatrice Lillie is also in the film but they say she had huge placards to read her lines because she was sadly senile already. It was her last picture and she plays one of the (chinese?) villains.

  • Thanks for posting this- I didn't know it existed.

  • Charming! I love Julie Andrews and the spirit in which she sang the song. I can't converse in Yiddish, but I understand the words (lots of Yiddish words sound like Hebrew - chusan/chatan) and know the song because I've attended many Jewish weddings of family & friends, and this one of the most popular ones sung there. If Neil Diamond can mess up "Hava Nagila" by singing "Hava Narananah" instead of "Hava Naraninah," then I'll certainly cut Julie some slack.

  • Yes, It is Mary Tyler Moore

  • Comment removed

  • It's from the movie " Thoroughly Modern Millie". Also I think I see Mary Tyler Moore as one of the other bridesmaids. I'm going to check on that as soon as I exit youtube

  • Yes that's Mary Tyler Moore. This is SO GOOD.

Thank you for letting me know this is from

"Thoroughly Modern Millie". I believe I'll buy it.

Just too bad she doesn't sing a correct ch mild gutteral sound, but just aspirates an "h". I'm an opera singer. I sing lots of German. I also find fault with those who sing words like "mich" as "mish" instead of the slight gutteral aspiration that is correct singing.

  • @tuadolcefanciulla

Isnt Julie Andrews an amazing talent?

Accents vary in German, just like accents vary in English. Citation:see "My Fair Lady". The ch sound you refer to is pronounced more softly by many. You learned the more formal Hoch Deutch, not Plat Deutch.

  • @DaProfezur Ciao Professore. Oh certainly you are correct.- In German YES -there are different dialects. One I believe actually pronouces, for instance, durch as dursh. BUT.... this is YIDDISH. Yiddish is VERY gutteral. Ich, for instance would sound the ch as harshly as an American who finds some horrible tasting would say Yucchhhhh! or Blechhhhhhh!

  • Love it!Julie Andrews is sooo great!

  • it sounds like "trinkt le chaim, trinkt a gläsl wein" :D:D:D:D:D

anyone out there who can tell me the lyrics?

  • Comment removed

  • That line is "drink to life, drink a glass of wine." Some of the lyrics that I caught were: Groom and Bride, Congratulations! Drink to life, it's a wedding. Drink to life with a glass of wine. Let's sing-it's a celebration. Let's dance with joy. Play, band, for the in-laws. The sweet bride, the handsome groom."

  • thank you!! :D...

how do u know the words?

  • Grew up hearing my grandparents speaking Yiddish to my mom and us kids!! :-)

  • cool.. anyways, thank you!

  • for some reason the dance reminds me of peacocks...especially the start of the dance

    its awesome

  • This movie is GREAT! its hilarious.

I think that the video is played faster than on the movie/ soundtrack, because her voice is a little higher-pitched on this than on the movie and s/t.

My favorite part is "Cheeree bimbim..."

  • Amexae!!!

  • MAZAL TOV! xD

    I *love* this film!

  • man half my family are jewish and that lady who starts dancing at like 1:27 so reminds me of my aunt!

but what beautiful singing, wish could get on mp3!

  • @ZubinZubinZubin ,you can.

    search on google: "YouTube2MP3",

    Good Luck!

  • Which movie is this?? I like the song and would love to see the whole movie :-)

  • This is from Thoroughly Modern Millie! The film is at least 40 years old. I enjoyed it and even have the soundtrack on a 33rpm record. I think it was not a big hit. The language is Yiddish! It is a traditional happy Jewish wedding song.

  • @YiddishMeydele Just for the record, THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE was the biggest hit in the history of Universal Studios, up to the point of its release. It stayed their top-grossing film, for three years, until AIRPORT surpassed it.

  • What language is this???

  • oi, Julie Andrews is my favorite. So poised. So well spoken.

    Just love for her

  • Hello:

Does anyone know why in a Jewish wedding the rabbi brokes the glasses?Thank you!

  • The bridegroom breaks the glass not the rabbi, so that one will not forget the destruction of the 2nd temple (western/wailing wall).

  • Thank you so much!

  • Wow! Fantastic.

  • FABULOUS!!!! 5*****

    Love,

    Di

  • What a Masterpiece!

  • what movie is this from?

  • "Thoroughly Modern Millie"

  • thanks!! great vid btw! is it normally in english?

  • This may not be an accurate portrayal of a Jewish wedding, but really! This is a Hollywood Movie! Accuracy always goes out the window in favor of spectacle.

  • Soooo many fake beards...

  • This is the most goyische looking Jewish Wedding I've ever seen...

  • I'm a beginning student but I can do a rough translation:

    Husband and wife, congratulations.

Drink to health. This is a wedding

Drink to health with a glass of wine.

    Let's sing. It's a celebration.

Let's dance. Freylakhs (a type of circle dance)

Play, klezmer musicians for the in-laws. This is a beautiful wedding. Play ( not quite sure but most something along the lines of) so the mothers won't be sad

    Drink to health. say congratulations
