FIRST DEATH METAL VOCAL....as an 8 year old it set me on my music way. Now if I can find ALI and the FIRST RAP SONG when he gave a 2 minuite rhyme to no music....
@markowee Many thanks for mentioning Los Shains. I've just been listening to it and it is indeed a more than worthy take on "The Crusher". Also Los Saicos (another band from Peru) and probably a whole more that are worth searching out, I see. Who would have thought they had 60's garage bands in Peru ? Not me (until now anyway) and let alone that they produced work like this. Happy listening.
With all the dance craze songs at the time & one of the band members able to do a voice impression of The Crusher, you could see where they thought of the different wresting moves you could do & came up with this song. " Do the Twist, Do the Watusi, Do the Mash Potato - Do the Crusher, Do the Hammerlock, Do the Half-Nelson."
I love both Cramps and this version. There is no better version. Cramps version is for people who like it fast, aggressive..basically punk..But this is good in its own way too.
One of the most demented wrestling songs of all time, recording by The Novas in the hotbed of professional wrestling, Minneapolis. It's always a thrill to hear it.
Loved the Cramps' cover, but the original is TRANSCENDENT. The vocalist here has the gravelly, haranguing voice that perfectly fits the bad-guy-wrestler theme, and the playing and production are wonderfully crude. A serious rival to "Surfin' Bird" as the greatest trash-/garage-rock song of all time. Thanks for posting!
This 1964 hit by Minnesota's Novas takes me right back to watching The Crusher's in action on WIIC's 'Studio Wrestling'. The roaring, gravelly voice actually is that of pro-wrestler Reggie "The Crusher" Lisowski.
I recognize some of those photos, but not all. Where are they from? It must have been quite a few years ago if they're referring to a wrestler as a "negro."
Most of the photos are from the cover of the LP "The Big Itch vol 3" and few photos from the inlay booklet of the CD "Bill Carlisle - Busy Body Boogie".
"You take your fist, put it on your waist. And if you don't, you're gonna be a disgrace. Then you squeeze your partner's head til he's blue in the face."
It's hard to compare the two. Two totally different styles from two totally different eras. I personally think the Cramps is terrible, but that's just my opinion.
and i personally think the Nova's played this song to slow and boring to dull, and the Cramps came along & made it faster and more enjoyable, but thats just my opinion.
Dull? I'm a huge Cramps fan too (and I love their version almost as much as the original), but it was garage band sounds like this that Lux and Ivy folded into Rockabilly and everything else to get that amazing inimitable sound....and if you turn them both up, I think the Novas will make the walls shake and paint peel twice as fast...and that's rock'n'roll at its raunchy best...BTW RIP Lux and Reggie...
c'est vraiment de la balle ce morceau, rien ne vaut l'original !!!!!!!!

@TOBERT001 I agree. Only the version of the Peruvian 60´s garageband Los Shains (El Monstruo) gets close.

It was staged back then too, but at least they pretended it was real. They don't even bother with that anymore.

I prefer this version. The vocals just seem more authentic to the theme of the song: that gravelly pro wrestler-style voice works better, I think.

I agree with you that the vocals on this version are better, significantly so in my opinion. And I am a big Cramps fan!
I do like the Cramps version better musically though.
