  • Hola. Yo juego Karate.

  • WOW What a load of crap!

  • Ridículo! Esse rapaz até hoje não entendeu o verdadeiro significado do Karatê e dos Katas.

  • Absolutely uneducated and unpracticed technique. Dresses like a karate-ka, performs like a boxer trained for three weeks.

  • @IEKUKATAKA Osu! Good to see someone w/ a reasonable mind chime in on this buffoonery of a kata! People like u an I know that there is lots of room for evolution in traditional karate w/o having to change the kata. Many sensei have developed thesis for their dan certifications that cover technical, tactical and philosophical aspects of karate for decades w/o having to created a bunch of shoulder hunched over monkey shit like this! HAHAHA!

  • MMA sucks

  • Just because hiean shodan may seen like a simple kata i would never say that it has few uses. If y don't find anything useful in it to apply to a real fight i suggest u take a good look at your own view of karate again. Some of the greatest fundamentals of fighting are found in the hiean kata's right down to ground work and weapons. You have to see past textbook bunkai and see how flexible and useful the hiean kata's are.

  • Very interesting! I think there is a good point in here. This is the exact reason that different styles using the Pinan/ Heian katas perform them differently. Each of the founders adjusted the kata to their training and self-defense philosophy.

By the way, most Shotokan karateka don't realize it, but we practice kata in a JKA way that Nakayama created. I have a copy of Funakoshi's first book and the kata are performed very different.

  • Finally someone who understands deeply and has a clear knowledge of what he practices. Thank you for the comment.

  • I think this isn't karate but boxe

  • hää xD sieht so aus als ob er schwarz hätte (weiß nich 100%^^) und trozdem eig alles falsch^^

  • Total falsch. xDDD

  • While I respect your opinion and right to do what you will to your own style, as a JKA student and teacher you can no longer call this "Kata" HEIAN-SHODAN as you have changed it and made it your own. It is no longer a "Shotokan Kata" nor will it ever be...

I will say, the Bunkai would need to be added to the video to use this in training and I would love to see it.

    Much luck with your training...

  • was is dass denn

  • no offense meant, but I don't get a point... why change Kata in such a way? what do you think you achieved with this? It's not Heian Shodan anymore, and I don't see any use of this in a real MMA fight. And finally, why exactly Heian Shodan, the most basic Kata which, in its original form, isn't very usefull in a real life fighting anyway.

  • I respect your opinion but here are my answers. 1. The very basic Kata is extremely useful in a real life fighting alright, or you have never heard of the saying: "Going basic is always the best choice when fighting". 2. It's not Heian-Shodan anymore = I agree, but the concepts are the same. That's what you can't see. One don't practice Katas only as movements, there are a lot of other things involved in the play. That is what I was seeking and found training this adaptation for my MMA fight.

  • And finaly. 3. I changed it for personal reasons and have achieved my goals. By doing so I worked my mind, body and spirit for my MMA fight. * I posted the video for an specific purpose: Show my other friends karatekas who were far away from me what I was using to improve myself for my fight. Eventhough many of them pratice the TRADITIONAL form of the ART, they understood, respected and agreed with what I did altought some of them don't believe in competition, but that's another story. OSS!

  • Alright. I respect your opinion. I based myself on your first comment to reply "...that does not mean you can't start with the kata as they are and once those a learned move on to MMA." I started with them as they are and then I moved on to MMA. Anyways, the true reason for Katas have nothing to do with competition. Techniques used have no value when compared to the BASE (the real meaning) and the STRUCTURE of what a KATA really is. Once you understand that you'll see what I'm talking about.

  • I can't believe you actually tried to adapt a heian for MMA. Yes MMA is different from point fighting but that does not mean you can't start with the kata as they are and once those a learned move on to MMA.

  • That's exactly what I've done.

  • No you changed the heian, and the concept might be the same thing but the reason that all these masters in the last few hundred years have not made very few big changes is because the kata teaches the concepts so well. It's pretty self righteous.

  • The original Heian Shodan didn't really need to be changed...

  • It didn't? Ooooops...LOL

    OSS!

  • I'm just kidding, it's a good adaptation.

  • That's alright. U see, MMA is "a little" different than point fighting. Adaptations had to be made in order not to lose the original style and still B able to compete. The moves make little difference when the concept behind it is still the same if U know what I mean. Heian-Shodan is not just defense and attack it's more of a mental thing in which one has to get involved with to discover the real value and meaning behind it.

    OSS!!!

  • Heian Shodan is developed for point fighting? I thought point fighting came after. If the concepts you study are the same in both, then I guess it suits its purpose.

  • I think my response was in agreement with what you were trying to do. I myself do not use Heian Shodan as punches however, it is a variety of throws and take downs. If you study MMA, and enter a 'cage', then to control a take down is necessary for getting the upper hand. Though, I agree, if studying Heian Shodan as text book applications, which is seemingly punches and blocks, then your adaptation is more efficient. Even this I agree with you on, but you lose the take downs and throws.

  • Nice...I liked what U wrote - that's another way of studying it. There are many ways of using it for different directions depending on what you're focusing on.

Where do you study and what style do you do?

    OSS!

  • I an in Shotokan Karate, and if you do not know, this is mainly sport and point Karate. I do not do sport karate, nor do I compete in point fighting. I think I might be in the wrong style, lol, I spend much of my training doing Kata and Bunkai. When you study your fighting, do you study Karate Katas(bunkai), like grappling, throws, takedowns, strikes etc?

  • heian shodan

    >>>>>>nidan

    >>>>>>sondon

    >>>>>>godon

    and one other

    this is the hardest
