A bit late... There was a diesel powered car back in the '50s - the Cummins Diesel Special, which competed twice at Indy (then a counting round of the F1 world championship). IIRC, it sat on pole even. While it didn't finish either race (turbo failure/accident), that was the first diesel car in F1...
@an65001 Thats mature! Gasoline, Methanol and Nitro, thats real fuel for real race engines. We dont want a big dark cloud comming out of the cars each time they accellerate. Diesel engines are for hilbilly rednecks( -you.. ), who has a crush on their tractors.
a bloody great inline six in an f1 car!!?? not likely chaps. the packaging would be woefull, its too tall, too long, & too heavy! nice try, im sure it'll fool a few dumbarses)
I wanna say that the engine sound is artificial, no inline six diesel (especially without common rail) sounds like that, that sounds more like a gas f1 engine revving to 12-15K rpms, an unreachable rpm for ANY diesel not using COMMON RAIL like this one, you have to give throttle via a computer. BS
@Mcroostr sound is real but it doens't sound like that in real life, supercharger whining makes it sound so fast reving. Camera microphone is so weak that it can't record real sound.
Dude, you and many other people dont understand the video, the sound you hear speeding fast its the blower(supercharger), the dial in the video its not the rpm it's the boost gauge.
i'm 100% sure of that because i run on same setup.

WTF are you on about F1 engine?????!!?!?!? For a start turbo's are banned and you need to use pump FUEL! Go back and jump in ur Mack truck fkn hick! F1 lol!!
Turbos are currently banned but there has been a lot of talk about bringing them back, FIA president Max Mosley himself said that there is a very good chance that turbos will be seen in the future. F1 cars dont exactly run off pump fuel, although it shares the same makeup as pump fuel it is very very tightly controlled mixture. With diesels proving very successful in Le Mans, I dont see why not. Marc Gene who is Ferrari's F1 test driver in huge support of Diesel in F1.
why not? i mean.. i LOVE these 2.4L revving at 19,000.. but look at like the Le Mans cars.. some of the most successful were diesel powered like the Audi R10s and such. Diesel's are incredibly efficient and economical. I'm not pushing to have diesels in formula 1 but when it happens ill still be cheering. and I'm totally with you that we need to be adapting to the future but these new regulations the FIA is starting aren't exactly the greatest for that.. things like standardized engines....
Yea and??? They are a type of Fuel both very different, Diesel is more oil (diesel is produced from petroleum and is a hydrocarbon mixture, obtained in the fractional distillation of crude oil between 200 °C and 350 °C) Don't see Petrol Fuel blowing black smoke do you Sherlock??!
Actually Gasoline if run really rich on a hot day is capable of black smoking. Remembers old vans and cars with carburetors smoking bad! Though with modern EFI it is less likely to occur
In the case of F1, fuel economy is the focus. On diesel you could probably go for another two laps ahead of the other cars before having to pit. And a Diesel engine is relatively simple, and can be built extremely light.
You're torque would be absolutely demonic too. 20k feet of torque lol.

Theres just something very wrong with the idea of a diesel F1 engine.
One of the best things about F1 is the noise and this just doesnt do it for me at all, its a nice idea but please dont let this be the future of my favourite sport.
Moron.Theres nothing wrong with it at all, what do you think formula 1 is all about?Car factories that test new ideas and construction concepts at the track the best way possible,I hardly think you are in the consideration where you sit behind your TV screen with your beer and potato chips.

interesting idea but NOT F1 quality so its a few guys building a high output diesel F1 motor..
if the likes of BMW, Ferrari or Mercedes made a diesel F1 engine it would be amazing.. like the Audi diesel Le Mans cars...

this is not diesel
sardosfish 2 years ago
Yes it is.
Look at the injector lines on top of the rocker covers.
They have been working on a diesel engine for this application for a long time. Diesel fuel has more BTU's so you get more power.
Here the rattling (indiginous to a diesel engine) in the vid?

I know the chemical composition difference between diesel and petrol and also how a diesel vs. petrol engine works.
Ever seen a Diesel-engine that runs on optimum A/F ratio?
